A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
In the summer of 2006, Cheryl Contee, blogging under the pseudonym “Jill Tubman”, launched Jack & Jill Politics. Shortly after meeting at the then-YearlyKos Conference (now Netroots Nation), she brought on Baratunde Thurston aka “Jack Turner.” That was the summer Jack & Jill Politics was born.
Since that summer, our team has expanded to include several regular “front page” contributors, a growing roster of guest contributors representing affiliated organizations. Jack & Jill Politics is proud to have hundreds of engaged community members. We’ve won numerous awards for our work and JJP blog posts have influenced the national narrative and global dialogue on race and how African-Americans react to the issues of the day. Our coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention is now in the U.S. Library of Congress archives. Mainstream media sources around the world such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian U.K., CNN, MSNBC, BBC Online/TV/Radio, Agence France Press, Al Jazeera and many more quote JJP contributors regularly.
Our goal at JJP is to provide a middle class African-American perspective on U.S. politics and to ameliorate the portrayal of African-Americans in the media. The majority of African-Americans are neither drug-dealing criminals nor super-elites like Oprah, Michael Jordan and Jay-Z. JJP seeks to provide the diverse viewpoints of the tax-paying, hard-working, engaged and patriotic African-American majority on current affairs and popular culture. At it’s best, JJP seeks to carry on the tradition of insightful social and political commentary in the spectrum of W.E.B. DuBois, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes.
Jack and Jill Politics is not affiliated with Jack and Jill of America, Jack and Jill Magazine, “Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill to Fetch a Pail of Water” nor any of the other Jack and Jills out there on the Google. Just so you know.
Cheryl Contee writes as Jill Tubman for the award-winning & top-ranked black political blog JackAndJillPolitics.com which she co-founded in 2006. She is on the Advisory Board of Applied Research Center, BlogHer’s International Activist Scholarship Committee and the Advisors Board of Blogging While Brown. Cheryl also chairs the board of CommonGoods.net. Cheryl has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, San Francisco Magazine, BBC and CNN among many other media appearances. I enjoy blogging because I have loved politics ever since the 1983 Election of Harold Washington as Mayor. Living in Chicago, I grew up watching Politics as Blood Sport and it never left me. I was deflated by the selection of George W. Bush as President in 2000 – it shook my belief in what I felt were the foundations of this country. 2004 should have made me more detached, and it did, for a short time, but then the passion for politics reignited in time for the 2006 election season and it hasn’t stopped. The 2008 Election season was the most fun I’ve seen in politics since 1983.

If you’ve ever seen School Daze, I can best be described as “Dap” (Laurence Fishburne with the megaphone). That’s how I roll. In college I was Mr. Black Student Union. . . the brotha with a plan, always holdin’ it down for the cause (whatever that cause may be). In law school I worked on matters from voting rights to discrimination and civil rights/civil liberties. Ask my friends about me and they’ll likely say the same thing . . .“Dang, that brotha be serious!”
Hence, the name, “B-Serious.”
I am a strong believer in the cultivation and promotion of black thought. I love the exchange of ideas, the wealth of information and honest dialogue. As JJP has grown in maturity, reach and influence, we have sought to expand the range of ideas that are exchanged on these pages. Through online and offline connections, we have built relationships with a number of organizations whose missions are consistent with the interests of our community. So, from time to time, representatives from those groups participate in the community directly by blogging here. We are proud to work with such a diverse and distinguished set of folks all working to not just blog about the world, but also create a better one.
James Rucker is co-founder and executive director of ColorOfChange.org, a group often described as an NAACP 2.0 for the 21st century. ColorOfChange.org exists to strengthen Black America’s political voice by empowering its members—Black Americans and our allies—to make government more responsive to the concerns of Black Americans and to bring about positive political and social change for everyone.
CoC uses the Internet to enable its members to speak in unison and keep them informed about the most pressing issues for Black people in America. Most importantly, ColorOfChange.org gives members ways to act, lobbying elected representatives or bringing attention to issues by holding coordinated events, running ads, and demanding that the news media cover our issues.
JJP and ColorOfChange.org have worked together since the spring of 2007, and the blog posts here at JJP and the conversations they generate in the comments have been a consistent source of insight and inspiration for ColorOfChange.

Additionally, he is a senior policy advisor at Green For All.
Van also holds a joint appointment at Princeton University, as a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and in the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
Rinku Sen is the president and executive director of The Applied Research Center, a racial justice think tank that also publishes ColorLines magazine. ARC is built on rigorous research and creative use of new technology. Its goal is to popularize the need for racial justice and prepare people to fight for it. By telling the stories of everyday people, ARC is a voice for unity and fairness in the structures that affect our lives.
To fight structural racism, we must be able to document it, promote equity theories, stimulate discussion and highlight real solutions. We value alliances and coalitions in bringing about change, and we unify sectors of the movement that should be working cooperatively. We’re huge fans and friends of JJP because we share the goal of popularizing solutions to the racial divide and preparing people to fight for them.
Adam Luna is the political director for America’s Voice, a campaign set up to pass comprehensive immigration reform. He loves JJP and uses his soapbox here to share some musings about the irrational politics of improving the lives of people of color. As the number of hate groups and hate crimes skyrocket, fascist revolutionaries are considered “balance” on the news, and notorious racists have become crusaders for black people with bogus claims that Latinos are taking your jobs, crusading against the “illegals” has become cover for a vote against healthcare, housing, education, you name it.
Consider Adam the guy who reads Nazi blogs so you don’t have to. A Latino canary in the coalmine, watching out for opportunities to fight back or just laugh at those who are terrified of a more beautifully diverse America. He encourages you to join the effort to kick the extreme back to the fringe where it belongs.
Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins is the CEO of Green For All, a national organization dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans through a clean-energy economy. Her accomplishments include assembling a civil rights coalition that successfully lobbied for two significant improvements to the House version of the American Clean Energy and Security Act: securing funding for job training, and guaranteeing broad access to clean energy jobs. These are the Act’s only provisions creating opportunity for low-income people and people of color.
Phaedra offers JJP a connection to tangible action and a path to a more economically and environmentally empowered future for our community.
Past guest bloggers from Green For All include Julian Mocine-McQueen and Van Jones.

Hi I need you blogs in a racist town. Help…..
I live in a small rural “white” town in Missouri.
I have been fighting for civil rights in Camdenton Missouri for almost 20 years.
I am Caucasian and I am disgusted by what I have seen in this rural all “white' town. I am so upset because I went to a racist rally disguised as a “Tea Party” rally at the Camdenton high school gymnasium. ( I wanted to see what it was all about). I was shocked. I went home and immediately wrote a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. I am posting my letter that has been published from the Camdenton Lake Sun Newspaper:
I attended the TEA PARTY MOVEMENT RALLY in Camdenton Missouri on Saturday April 24, 2010.
I listened carefully to every word resonating from the microphone on that stage and I am ANGRY!
I DID NOT ATTEND A NATIONAL TEA PARTY MOVEMENT. THE “REAL” ORIGINAL TEA PARTY MOVEMENT emerged in 2009 in response to the 2008 bailouts and the 2009 stimulus package. The TEA PARTY MOVEMENT IS supposed to be about anti-stimulus, anti-deficit, and anti-bailout.
The name TEA ((Taxed Enough Already) is a play on the TEA PARTY slogan.
The “God Fearing Christian Sermons” preached in the small town gymnasium shocked me. Had I mistakenly entered into a rural Christian church thinking I was at the TEA PARTY? I wanted to hear about taxes and bailouts not about how a Christian God feels about homosexuals or a woman’s right to choose.
How arrogant AND close minded can “Christian” people be, who believe that THEIR WAY is the ONLY WAY or THEIR CHRISTIAN GOD will get me if I do not do what their GOD says. How can the “PEOPLE” of THE CAMDENTON MISSOURI TEA PARTY MOVEMENT honestly believe that their “Christian God” is the choice of WE THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE? THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS NOT a country made up of only “White Christian Folk”. Civil rights means freedom for ALL the people of the USA to believe and practice their own individual civil rights and religions. It is not about one belief, one culture, or one God.
A young speaker at the TEA PARTY even brought up the fact that the government of the USA should never have passed the Hate Crimes Bill. Now that is the perfect example of CODE SPEAK and DOG WHISTLING. The Hate Crimes Bill protects people who are different from “straight white Christian people”. Another speaker spoke of “state rights” a code speak for institutionalized segregation and racism. The Hate Crimes Bill was written to protect people’s civil rights who choose to live outside the “White” Republican God fearing doctrine. CIVIL RIGHTS means freedom of choice without threat or fear…..from a person or group who believes their way is the ONE and only way..Hence the HATE CRIMES BILL..
I left the TEA PARTY with a sick feeling in my stomach…I reflected back to the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and even now…..Thoughts of the rural “white” Christian towns of America who thought their way was the only way and other races and differences were just…….simply… not accepted! I had just witnessed “Code Speak” and “Dog Whistling”……alive and well in Camdenton Missouri in the year 2010.
I had a Flashback to 1968 and the “Southern Strategy” by Richard Nixon or Ronald Reagan and the “Devolution Revolution” also called the “New Federalism” targeting minorities. This was CODE SPEAK then as much as it is now. The speakers on the stage in Camdenton Missouri praised Ronald Reagan, never mentioning the vast amount of prejudice, greed and wealth under the Reagan administration that continues today and is one of the reasons the TEA PARTY had to be formed.
The point of all of the racist “strategies” was to make small town rural white Republicans believe that all “blacks” were simply bad by telling lies. The speakers used fear when discussing homosexuals, abortions, political parties, God and President Obama.
UMMMMMMMMMMMMM…………….
NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED IN RURAL WHITE AMERICA!…The belief that one party, one religion, one ethnicity, one state, one whatever……. is the only way ……..is frankly ignorant, racist and unacceptable in the United States of America in the year 2010
I am not saying that all of small town rural White Christian Americans are racist. But for the ones who are, whites are not superior over any other race, men are not superior over women, women have their own minds and bodies and can make choices, children have rights, animals have rights, the planet earth has rights, and we have the right to worship a higher power or not worship anything or anybody. .
White Christian Americans cannot make an argument on both sides of the fence.
For example, picketing that the government cannot jam health care down their throats, but then jamming God down ours.
We are all human beings on planet earth. (Can you even believe that one of the speakers in the TEA PARTY in Camdenton made fun of being “green” and taking care of planet earth)?
The truth is without the earth, world peace and love, we as a human race, will not survive.
My higher power does not preach hate or prejudice.
Peace.

The vicious attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was horrific but not surprising. As shocking and repugnant as the attack was, it was inevitable. There has been a climate of hate and intolerance that has been in the air since President Obama’s election.

If the person who shot and killed a few people in Tuscon AZ was either a Muslim or a black person, the way the country would have reacted would be very different.
If he was a Muslim we would be a red alert and said it is Islamic fundamentalist jihad etc etc…
If he was black we would have said worse things.
So have we as a nation really grown and matured?

I am subscribing to your site for a lot of reasons. Among them is the fact that I feel strongly about the marginalization of people based on, among other things, ethnicity, economic status, gender, orientation, religious choice (or lack of choice), and appreciate enlightening discussion. I don’t know if humankind will ever let go of stupid, divisive bias but the more we interact and enter into dialog, and are receptive to really listening, the better chance we all have of becoming better people.

Just discovered this site and observations and comments made me want to read more, and hear other responses. What I have read made my heart and mind react like iron shavings to a magnet. The more dialog the better! Meanwhile, I am dragging a lot of the dialog about “The Help” over to my FB page since these real life issues and reactions are much more important than, say … withered crops in FramVille.

Found your site just by chance. I know this was an old thread, but something was never answered…
Cheryl wrote an article entitled “Mel Gibson’s Non-Reality-Based Raping Niggers”. I question the validity of the phrase “non-reality-based”, as it does not explain the mindset of minority gangs in New York City, nor the violent assault, rape, and sodomy of Trisha Meili, a female jogger, and attacks on others in New York City’s Central Park, on April 19, 1989. The fact is that a great majority of gang members are under the age of 18, and therefore do not become statistical entries in minority gang crimes. That does not make their actions any less deplorable. I personally have seen non-white minor gang members bait white cops and then play the race card when the cops react. Please explain or justify.
