A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
So you’d think that Gov. Haley Barbour, thought to be considering a run at the GOP presidential race, would have kept his big mouth shut about racist, confederate, KKK stuff.
He just managed to emerge from the cloud of his own apologist and historical revisionist statements about the Council of White Citizens and his own non-role in the struggle to end segregation in the South if you believe folks who were there, like Verna Bailey, actual civil rights hero. If you’ll recall, Haley said he didn’t think segregation was all “that bad”.
That didn’t go over so well for some reason. Barbour recently conceded to NAACP and online activists’ demands to release the Scott sisters, one of whom needed the other sister’s kidney to live, from jail. He did this because, you know, he loves himself some black folks! He’s just a good ole boy…never meanin’ no harm – like they sing about in Dukes of Hazzard. Right?
Think again. Now this via Politico and Black Politics on the Web:
In the latest racially charged incident in his home state, Haley Barbour on Tuesday drew fire when he refused to condemn a proposal honoring a Ku Klux Klan leader and Confederate general on a state license plate.
“I don’t go around denouncing people. That’s not going to happen,” Barbour, who is considering a run for the White House in 2012, said when asked about the plate, the Associated Press reported. “I know there’s not a chance it’ll become law.”
The state NAACP has denounced the proposal from the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who went on to become an early leader of the KKK.
So there are a number of problems here. Right off the bat, Forrest was a native of Tennessee, so why would Mississipians even want a license plate celebrating him? Unless they’re racist white supremacists that wanna ride like the Klan — America’s first homegrown terrorist organization?
Haley’s trying to play both sides — he thinks by saying “it can’t win” that that should please folks against the bill while not coming out strong against KKK supporters. Can’t have your KKK plate and eat it too, Haley. He’s dry-humping Confederates because he’s not sure how far he can penetrate without getting in trouble, I reckon. This is just another nail in the coffin of a presidential campaign that’s not likely to go too far — not with a Klan license plate on it, at least.
The GOP has no future in America if they imagine that emerging and more diverse generations will be amused at this winking at racist terrorists…
