A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
President Obama: “Worthy of those who sent us here to serve”
Echoing his remarks from this week’s memorial service in Tuscon, Arizona, President Obama had a similar message for leaders in Washington regarding our national discourse. In his Weekly Address, the President asks political leaders to move forward, mindful of what is really important. Noting the common cause shared in the wake of last week’s shootings, the President encouraged leaders in Washington to work together, understanding that some things are bigger than politics:
“So as business resumes, I look forward to working together in that same spirit of common cause with members of Congress from both parties – because before we are Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans.”
The President noted that the times and challenges we face require that we move forward. However, the events of Tuscon, the President observed, “reminded us of who we really are – and how much we depend on one another.” For the President, it is a matter of carrying on with the goal of meeting our challenges in a way that is “worthy of those who sent us here to serve.”
