A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
I’m back(ish) friends. My daughter, Juice, says waddup.
And in the spirit of getting back into the Jack and Jill fold, I post the following email from The Harlem Club’s managing member without comment or filigree. Enjoy.
Dear Friends:
After intense lobbying and commitments of financial support from a group of African-American professionals living and working in Harlem, I agreed to re-open The Harlem Club.
The plan is to re-open The Harlem Club in Harlem by Spring 2011.
Why the need for The Harlem Club?
For too long, professional men and women in Harlem have been denied the opportunity to socialize (at a Harlem venue) with like minded professionals – Free of hoodrats and pigeons.
The identities of our members will always be kept confidential.
The Harlem Club was established as a private club with a liquor license in 2004 at a loft space in the Murray Hill section of mid-town Manhattan (operated for 4 years before closing) by a group of African-American men: investment bankers, lawyers and doctors.

Over the next few months, our membership committee will be inviting men and women from all racial groups who meet the below guidelines to apply for membership.
Associate Membership (open only to women from all racial groups)
1) Very Attractive;
2) 21 to 35 years of age;

Founding General Members (open only to men from all racial groups)

Founding General Members will be required to pay a onetime membership fee of $5,000. Founding General Members are members who joined prior to a lease being signed for the club’s location. Founding General Members are FREE from having to pay any membership fees for the lifetime of the club’s lease (10 years).
General Members will be required to pay $5,000 per year. Once, The Harlem Club has signed a lease for its location, only General Membership will be offered. General Members are those members who joined after the club signed a lease for its location.
The number of members at The Harlem Club will be limited to 450 members: 150 men and 300 women. In addition, The Harlem Club will maintain a membership of General Members (men only) that is 51% African-American.
We welcome your interest in The Harlem Club.
Sincerely,
Thomas Lopez-Pierre
