Thomas burst onto the national stage by winning the 1986 United States Nationals.

Going into the 1988 Winter Olympics, the setup began with Thomas winning the 1988 United States Championship
The Short Program from the 1988 Winter Olympics
The Long Program from the 1988 Winter Olympics, where Thomas wound up winning the Bronze Medal.
As a young Black girl who was obsessed with figure skating, the appearance of Thomas on the scene was so inspirational, I can barely describe it. But, I always respected that she took her education so seriously and went onto become the doctor that she said she would become. That there was life after skating.
