If you are anywhere near Brooklyn on Monday October 19th 12th, you should get yourself to this event I’m co-hosting. If you know people who will be anywhere near Brooklyn, please tell them to attend and bring a little extra money. Either way, please donate what you can right now.

Baratunde Thurston, Elon James White, Julia Chance, Patricia Spears Jones, and Siddhartha Mitter invite you to meet James Perry, the progressive candidate for Mayor of New Orleans, at a reception in Brooklyn with special guest Melissa Harris-Lacewell. Full details are on this flyer.

Here’s a video of James discussing housing discrimination in the Gulf.

In February and March 2010, New Orleans is selecting its next Mayor — and James Perry is the true progressive candidate in the race. A native New Orleanian, James is the executive director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center. A committed, lifelong activist for social justice, fair housing, civil rights and economic progress, he is the kind of leader New Orleans desperately needs.

We would like you to come meet James and his special guest, Melissa Harris-Lacewell, professor of politics and African American studies at Princeton, and commentator on MSNBC. You probably know Melissa from her frequent appearances fighting the good fight on TV and in The Nation, Huffington Post and many other outlets. Now come meet her in person!

We want you to be there to hear James tell us his vision for New Orleans, and Melissa tell us why James is the right man for the job. We will also feature:

– remarks by Baratunde Thurston, from Jack and Jill Politics
– comedy by Elon James White, of “This Week in Blackness” fame
– music by Malesha Jessie and other Brooklyn artists

James is running a small-donor campaign. The suggested contribution is $25 — more if you can, but the key is to attend! You can learn more about James at his campaign website: www.jamesperry2010.com and follow him on Twitter.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday!
