Long overdue, the brave women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion received a well-deserved “Thank You” from the country they served more than 65 years ago. Buried in the footnotes of history, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion gained distinction as the only all black female battalion to serve in World War II.

The women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion played an important role in World War II by carrying out the important task of delivering mail, by boosting military morale, and by making history as the only battalion of African American women to go overseas. (National Postal Museum)

The Washington Post wrote about it a couple of days ago. You can read it, here. Take the time to check it out. It’s a truly remarkable story.

Even better is this video footage of the honor ceremony:

It’s things like this that remind us of why it’s important to honor Black History Month. It’s the stories that never get told. It’s the greater appreciation for the sacrifices of those who have come before. The history books never mentioned them.

But, damn it feels good to see things like this. God Bless.
