Gay marriage has been a controversial subject in the black community in the past. Despite the stereotypes, many African-Americans tend to be socially conservative on many issues, especially around sexuality.

I think the last word on this needs to be the moral authority of Coretta Scott King who, long before she died, reminded people that civil rights war hero Bayard Rustin and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington was gay. She supported gay marriage and said:

“Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union,” [King] said. “A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages.”

Co-sign on that. Bottom line though is that the people who are all bent out of shape about gay marriage also hate a whole bunch of other things and people too. They are filled with fear and hate. They fear what they call “the tyranny of tolerance“. Cue Lil Jon: “HWHUT?!”

These narrow-minded and ignorant people especially want more control over people who are not exactly like them. Which btw includes me and you. People who want to introduce laws that discriminate against a class of people are usually just itchin’ to discriminate against other groups of people too. It’s like a gateway drug for them. Here’s an example: one of the orgs promoting Prop 8 is the Pacific Justice Institute. About kids they’re focused on: “Preserving Students’ Rights To Share Their Faith and Be Protected from Indoctrination.” Yeah, that’s scary and sinister-sounding. And here’s them freaking out about Islam in public schools. Bill O’Reilly is a huge fan of PJI, btw. And we already know how he feels about oh, gays and lesbians and women in general and Jews and Hispanics and black people and Muslims and ….

Here’s one of the official nutjob spokespeople for Prop 8, Brad Dacus who coincidently is also president of PJI comparing the fight againt gay marriage to the fight against Hitler. Warning, it’s creepy and you can tell he’s the type of uptight, deer-in-the-headlights dweeb who probably thinks Obama is a terrorist and possibly also in league with Hitler, Bill Ayers, Satan and the boogeyman.

Riiight. Even if you’re uncomfortable with gay marriage, seriously let’s just think for a second about all the other things that America needs to fix right now that ain’t working like uh, the economy, the “war on terror”, the healthcare system, our schools, our bridges, our roads, etc. If 2 adults love each other and want to be together, I mean, who cares? I have lots of gay and lesbian friends including my best friend from high school who’s been with his partner actually longer than any of my straight friends have been with their life partners.

Given all of the other things going on in America right now, why are these folks so obsessed with what amounts to intolerance? Probably because they have a larger agenda in mind. Both Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzeneggar are urging people to vote no on Prop 8 as is the California Teachers Association. Please join me in voting against discrimination and for tolerance.
