Asks our poster craig hickman.

I don’t know the answer. To be honest, I don’t know much about Russian politics or history. All I know is that Russia invaded the supposed independent country of Georgia, which used to belong to the former Soviet Union.

The casualties that have occurred in the last 48 hours are massive to me, according to this story.

Putin’s Puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, is justifying the invasion to protect Russian citizens.

This story has the potential to get out of hand very fast, and thus, will involve the world, and inevitably the American Presidential Race. How will this effect the race between Obama and McCain? Since Iraq didn’t turn out to be the boon for McCain that he thought it would be, could these events turn things away from the domestic sphere to the international sphere?

Here are two informative diaries from DailyKos.

1. Georgia: oil, neocons, cold war and our credibility

2. US Transporting Georgian Troops Out of Iraq to Fight Russia

If you find any other informative stories, please put them in the replies. I know I’m not the only member of the JJP family who would like to know more information about this situation.
