UPDATE: Pat Buchanan out at MSNBC

On Thursday, Pat Buchanan used his column to announce that he has officially parted ways with MSNBC. He credited the more than 86,000 ColorOfChange members who flooded the network with emails and phone calls late last year. Buchanan writes:

A group called Color of Change, whose mission statement says that it “exists to strengthen Black America’s political voice,” claimed that my book espouses a “white supremacist ideology.” Color of Change took particular umbrage at the title of Chapter 4, “The End of White America.”

We gave MSNBC props last month when the network suspended Buchanan. On Thursday, ColorOfChange had reason to celebrate once again.

Buchanan’s column is further confirmation that MSNBC has decided to permanently end its relationship with him and the hateful, outdated ideas that he represents. Buchanan has a long history of passing off white supremacy ideology as mainstream political commentary. He has a right to express his opinion, but he’s not entitled to a platform on national television. MSNBC’s decision means that Buchanan will be free to speak his mind on a street corner, or on any number of white supremacist websites — which are full of his fans.

The work of our partners as CREDO Action was key to this campaign’s success. Together, we collected more than 275,000 petition signatures and made calls to MSNBC demanding that Buchanan be fired.

While Pat Buchanan was low hanging fruit, it was still necessary to pluck him; he was poisoning the rest of the tree.
What’s vital is that we don’t stop with Buchanan. He was on that network way too long. And that’s indicative of a larger, more systemic problem in network and mainstream cable television.
We shouldn’t have to petition and agitate in order to remove someone like Buchanan. We should already be in positions of management and authority, so that people (and sentiments) like that don’t even get hired.
