Martina Navratilova has breast cancer
Nine-time Wimbledon tennis champion Martina Navratilova said Wednesday she has breast cancer.
Navratilova said she has a noninvasive form of the cancer, called ductal carcinoma in situ, that was detected during a mammogram. The cancer was surgically removed in a procedure called a lumpectomy, and Navratilova will undergo radiation treatment, she said.
“I'm very hopeful,” the tennis legend said in an interview to air Wednesday night on CNN's “Larry King Live.”
DCIS, as the cancer is commonly called, has a 95 percent survival rate, Navratilova said. Some medical sources say the survival rate is even higher, approaching nearly 100 percent.
In DCIS, abnormal cells multiply and form a growth within a breast milk duct . The cancer is noninvasive, which means it originally doesn't spread out of the milk duct to other parts of the breast.
It is considered the earliest possible clinical diagnosis of breast cancer. If left untreated, about 30 percent of women with DCIS will develop invasive breast cancer an average of 10 years from the initial occurrence, the Breast Cancer Network of Strength says on its Web site.
Navratilova, 53, said she skipped her mammogram for several years and urged women to get the test done regularly.

Obama Gets Preachy

Barack Obama confirmed to Matt Lauer last week what we here at Time.com first reported in June 2009: the First Family is not looking to join a church in the Washington, DC area. The family's main reason for calling off the search, Obama said, was the concern that their presence would prove too disruptive for whatever church community they did join. It's a well-founded worry, as when the First Family ventured out to southeast Washington to attend Easter services at Allen Chapel AME Church on Sunday, those who had gotten advance word of the visit began lining up at the decidedly ungodly hour of 3:30 in the morning to score a seat in the 700-person sanctuary.
So instead of joining a church, it looks like Obama will have to create his own faith community. He made a start on Tuesday morning, inviting approximately 80 Christian leaders to a belated Easter breakfast in the East Room of the White House.
The event was billed as a prayer breakfast, but in reality it was the latest in a series of sectarian events the White House has hosted to observe key religious holidays. Last fall, Obama became the first U.S. president to attend a Diwali ceremony to celebrate the Indian festival of lights. The White House has also held a Hanukkah party, a dinner to break the fast during Ramadan, and most recently a Seder on the first night of Passover (although no outside guests attended).
Many Christian leaders visited the White House during the Christmas season for holiday parties, but according to White House aides, the President wanted to hold a separate event specifically observing a Christian holy day (even if it took place after Holy Week). The term “prayer breakfast” created some confusion, however, as in the past it has been used by other administrations for ecumenical gatherings of religious leaders from Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other traditions. In contrast, when Obama has met with religious leaders from different faiths, it has almost always been related to the work of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
The White House is not releasing the full list of attendees at the Easter breakfast. But the names they did provide to the press are a careful mix of ethnic and denominational leaders, including a large number of African-American pastors who met with the president separately before the breakfast and representatives from Mexican-American and Korean religious communities. Other notable attendees included mega-church pastors Bill Hybels of Willow Creek Church in Illinois and Joel Hunter of Northland in Florida; evangelical pastor and author Joel Osteen; progressive evangelical Brian McLaren; and the heads of the National Council of Churches, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, and the Salvation Army.
In addition, the aides pointedly invited Catholic leaders deemed friendly to the White House, including Sister Carol Keehan, president of the Catholic Health Association, who ended up supporting health reform over the protests of the bishops conference. Pietro Sambi, the Papal Nuncio (essentially the Vatican's ambassador to the United States), was also in attendance, although his was purely a diplomatic presence.
Several leaders, including Hybels and Sharon Watkins, head of the Disciples of Christ denomination, spoke at the breakfast event. But the most striking remarks were delivered by Obama himself. The president spoke for just a few short minutes and relied on a written text, but his words were the most self-consciously Christian he has uttered publicly as a national politician.

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday.
Mr. Awlaki, who was born in New Mexico and spent years in the United States as an imam, is in hiding in Yemen. He has been the focus of intense scrutiny since he was linked to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Tex., in November, and then to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25.
American counterterrorism officials say Mr. Awlaki is an operative of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the affiliate of the terror network in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. They say they believe that he has become a recruiter for the terrorist network, feeding prospects into plots aimed at the United States and at Americans abroad, the officials said.

Tom Coburn to play politics with the lives of a “relatively small amount of people”

The entire concept of the Party of No has been a dream come true for Tom “Dr. No” Coburn (R-OK). Long known for holding up spending bills in the senate, Coburn is now vowing to:
… block all future spending bills in the Senate that aren’t fully “paid for” with cuts to other spending programs.
That spending includes the extension of jobless benefits … a political decision that means 200,000 people are losing their benefits this week. Coburn's response?
Coburn cast doubt on any political backlash against the GOP over the issue, noting that when an unemployment extension is passed, it will include retroactive benefits for those who apply.
He argued voters will support the GOP given concerns about the deficit.
“The easiest thing in the world is to pass this bill unpaid for, but consider the millions of Americans whose financial futures would be damaged, versus the relatively small amount of people who will be affected by this delay. Now you tell me which vote takes the most courage.”
After all, it's only 200,000 people and their families who will be unable to pay the rent or put food on on the table. What a courageous, self-described Christian.

Many other govt. units are changing their pension structures to employee self directed pensions with defined contributions instead of open ended defined benefits plus open ended health care for retired workers.
Local and state govt. cannot afford the old 30 year and out full pension and healthcare of the past except for police and fire. They have ended up with 50 year olds retiring on full penision/healthcare and collecting a pension for longer than they worked.

All I am saying is that state and local govt. cannot afford to start paying pensions to people in their early 50s (other than police and fire). And they cannot afford to pay pensions/healthcare that are not universal or even common in non govt. jobs. When pensions were first introduce people usually lived only few years after they retired (if they even lived long enough to collect a pension). 30 and out or 20 and out pensions are just not sustainable.

White House Lays Out Time Frame For Financial Reform

Obama administration officials on Wednesday sounded a decidedly optimistic note about the passage of financial regulatory reform legislation and made explicit recommendations about those sticking points that remain to be debated.
In a briefing with reporters on Monday, three high-ranking White House officials laid out a fairly quick timeframe by which they expected legislation to be passed through Congress.
“We think this is picking up momentum,” said Neal Wolin, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. “If you have noticed in the last few weeks, you have seen Republicans in the Senate acknowledging that legislation is likely to happen, to get enacted this year. I think there is… a clear understanding of the importance of enacting legislation sooner than later.”
As it stands now, Wolin predicted that the Senate as a whole would start considering the legislation passed through the Senate Banking Committee “sometime in April” after which it will have to be merged with the House's variation. If everything goes to plan, the president could sign legislation into law by Memorial Day.

Chris Matthews had to explain what a cyberattack was to conservative MSNBC commentator Pat Buchanan Wednesday during “Hardball.”
Matthews, Buchanan, and Ron Reagan Jr. were discussing Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's attack on the White House Wednesday for its new Nuclear Posture Review, which outlines how the U.S. would use its nuclear weapons.
Bachmann told her supporters that the new rules would hurt the United States' efforts to defend itself. She argued that in the event of a cyberattack, the U.S. would not be able to use nuclear weapons to retaliate.
Matthews seemed to be blown away that someone would consider nuclear retaliation to a cyberattack. Buchanan appeared to be confused.
Matthews: How about the cyberattack part of this?
Buchanan: Look, to have a cyberattack you need a nuclear weapon on the other side because a cyberattack…

Matthews: She was saying that if we get hit with a cyberattack we should strike back with nuclear…
Buchanan: Well I see, you mean just computers. Do they mean computers?

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke sounds a warning on growing deficit
The basic idea is that to pay for this we have to pay less. It's a way but given your the FED chairman why is Bernanke's thinking the same not out of the box? He didn't see anything coming for years while on the FED. Why trust his thinking now?
My suggestion is that the tax code be radically altered. Tax receipts are not just down because of the recession. The portion of taxes paid by corporations has been ging down for years because the exemptions to taxation for their income have gone up. Why not just go to a flat tax and abolish all the exemptions or keep the exemptions for families needs only?

I went to the Anti-Ignorance Rally downtown Minneapolis after work. I didn't see any of my bosses. I guess that's a good thing. Got into a debate with one Chris Wunder. Imma have to look him up. He asked me why I was holding up a sign saying Tea Party politics are thinly veiled white supremacy. I said to him. A) who are these people calling Lewis, Clyburn niggers and threatening Ellison. He says he hasn'e seen any video. Then I asked him who the hell is Palin speaking of when she calls an all white audience “real americans?” No comment. Then I asked how come Bachmann was telling people they shouldn't answer their census'? He mentioned certain questions. I rolled my eyes and kept marching. I heard some crazy stuff but no cursing or name calling. Minnesota Nice I guess lol. (Those from here know I'm laughing as I say this).
Best wishes to Martina. Watching her play Chris Evert along with Connors, McEnroe and Borg got me playing tennis in my youth. Also adds to my appreciation of the Williams sisters. Have a good night.

So glad to see autism gettin' some play here at JJP. My 12 year old is on the autism spectrum. But just so you guys know, the biggest autism organization is also the biggest sellout. AUTISM SPEAKS (which DOES NOT speak for me…) raised $60+ million last year, and gave out less than 1/2 million for community programs. THEN they froze giving, saying that they couldn't afford it.

NEW ORLEANS — A former New Orleans police officer told federal authorities he saw a fellow officer shoot and kick unarmed, wounded civilians in a deadly incident on a bridge in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, marking the first time an officer has provided federal authorities with an eyewitness account of the events.
The former officer, Michael Hunter, pleaded guilty Wednesday to helping cover up the shootings on the Danziger Bridge less than a week after the August 2005 storm.
A court filing Wednesday that describes Hunter's account of the shootings contradicts a police report that said civilians shot at officers before the police opened fire, killing two people and wounding four others.
Seeing no danger to officers, Hunter says he shouted “Cease fire!” after an unidentified sergeant with an assault rifle and other officers opened fire on a group of unarmed civilians who took cover behind a concrete barrier on the bridge.
After they stopped firing, Hunter says he saw several civilians who appeared to be unarmed, injured and subdued.
“(The sergeant) suddenly leaned over the concrete barrier, held out his assault rifle, and, in a sweeping motion, fired repeatedly at the civilians lying wounded on the ground,” the filing says. “The civilians were not trying to escape and were not doing anything that could be perceived as a threat.”
Moments later, Hunter saw two men later identified as Lance Madison and his 40-year-old mentally disabled brother, Ronald, running away near the bottom of the bridge.

Mohammaed al Modadi Detained: Alleged Qatar 'Shoe Bomb' Suspect Restrained On United Airlines Flight To Denver

WASHINGTON — The FBI is probing whether a man tried to ignite his shoes on a DC to Denver flight Wednesday, according to law enforcement officials, who say the man is a Qatari diplomat.
An official said an air marshal on the flight apparently restrained them. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.
The officials said fighter jets were scrambled but proved unnecessary, as the plane landed safely in Denver with no injuries to passengers.
Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Kristin Lee said the man is being interviewed by law enforcement officials in Denver.
Two officials say the man is a Qatari diplomat who has been in the United States for years.
Unlike the Christmas Day bomb attempt on an Detroit-bound airliner, officials say it is not immediately clear what the man was trying to do – something harmful like start a fire or explosion, or something as innocent as smoke a cigarette.
Officials insisted Wednesday night it was still too early to tell whether the incident was an attempted act of terrorism or a giant misunderstanding.
A media hot line at Denver International Airport says the United Flight 663 from Washington to Denver was met by FBI and TSA officials around 7 p.m. MDT. Airport officials didn't immediately return phone calls to The Associated Press.

OK, I know it's hard to imagine Glenn Beck getting much worse than his history-abusing eliminationist attacks on the progressive movement, or his constant smearing of anyone who works for President Obama as a likely Marxist.
But yesterday, he managed — by unleashing an all-out attack on President Obama's family, and particularly his mother. It doesn't get much lower than that.
Of course, he opened the attack on Obama's family by saying that he was not attacking them. Really. And then he proceeded immediately to smear them:
I want you to know that I am by no means attacking his family. And in fact, I think after the first five minutes of the show tonight, you're actually going to feel sorry for the little boy, Barry Obama — the boy, the little one. This little boy. He's so cute! I don't feel sorry for the man, but the tragedy of this kid's childhood is staggering!
Lessee … you're not attacking his family, but then turn around and immediately claim that they abandoned the poor little kid. Come again?
His parents, seemingly, from what you can piece together, his parents seemingly placed radical politics over everything else, including their little boy!
I am not one to talk. I grew up with a Dad who worked all the time. He was a small business owner, he owned the city bakery in Mount Vernon, Washington. And, um the only time I saw him was at work. I work all the time. My kids come to work, and we spend time at my job, or we travel together. A lot of us do this. We have long hours and we support our families.
But how many of us have been abandoned for the bakery? Or my job? Or your job? Would you ever leave your kid for that?
How about — how many of us have been abandoned for a Marxist political theory? Or politics? This didn't happen to little Barack Obama once but twice. Both parents!
Of course, Obama's father did indeed essentially abandon his family — but it wasn't for politics, it was for personal ambition: he wanted to attend Harvard without the encumbrances of a wife and tiny son. The senior Obama was not a particularly admirable guy.
But then Beck turns to the subject of Obama's late mother, who Obama himself described as “the one who was the single constant in my life,” and “that she was the kindest, most generous spirit I have ever known, and that what is best in me I owe to her.”
How does Beck describe her? Why, as a commie sympathizer, of course:
She was described by a friend as, quote, “a fellow traveler.” If anybody who reads about progressives and Marxism, you recognize that language.
Yes indeed we do. “Fellow traveler” is what the McCarthyite Red-baiters of the 1950s liked to call liberals. Of course, the proof for Beck is that Dunham actually supported Adlai Stevenson in the 1956 election. Impressive, no?
Dunham later left to Hawaii, to travel to Indonesia for a second time, and then she left her son to move to Pakistan. She left her son with her parents. This is the second time this poor little boy was left by a parent!
This is complete and utter rubbish. Stanley Ann Dunham did not at any time “abandon” her son, and Beck's claim that she did is a filthy smear of the lowest sort.

They married in 1966 or 1967 and moved with six-year-old Barack to Jakarta, Indonesia, just after the unrest surrounding the ascent of Suharto. … In Indonesia, Dunham enriched her son's education with correspondence courses in English, recordings of Mahalia Jackson, and speeches by Martin Luther King Jr. She sent the young Obama back to Hawaii to attend Punahou School rather than having him stay in Asia with her. Madelyn Dunham's job as a vice-president at the Bank of Hawaii helped pay the steep tuition, with some assistance from a scholarship. … Ann Dunham left Soetoro in 1972, returning to Hawaii and reuniting with her son Barack for several years.
… Dunham returned to graduate school in Honolulu in 1974, while raising Barack and Maya. When Dunham returned to Indonesia for field work in 1975 with Maya, after three years in Honolulu, Barack chose not to go, preferring to finish high school in Hawaii while living with his grandparents.
So, to quickly recap: Ann Dunham never “abandoned” Barack Obama. She did send him to a private school for the sake of giving him an elite education — which is hardly the same as abandonment. And when she returned to Indonesia to conduct field work as an anthropologist, the teenaged Obama chose to stay in Hawaii with his grandparents instead — again, nothing particularly unusual about that.
And for what it's worth, Dunham didn't go to work in Pakistan until the late 1980s, by which time she was conducting work for the Asia Development Bank (which suggests, coincidentally, that Dunham was not exactly an opponent of capitalism). And “little Barry” by that time was a full-grown man in his 20s.
There's a lot more wrong with Beck's attack on Obama's family, particularly his smearing of Obama's grandparents as likely Marxists because they attended a Unitarian Church.
But if nothing else, it proves something we've already come to know: There is no depth to which Glenn Beck will not sink.
And at this point, he's just wallowing in scum.
