In this banking center walloped by the Great Recession, where unemployment just hit a 20-year high and as many as one in three black people are out of work, blacks could easily be frustrated with President Barack Obama's insistence that a rising economic tide for all will lift African-American boats.
Yet despite surging discontent among some black advocates over Obama's refusal to specifically target rising black unemployment, it's hard to find average black folks here who disagree with the president's approach.
“He has been addressing the black agenda as far as health care, education, all that,” said Tamera Gomillion, a bill collector who has been struggling to pay her own bills.
“It took eight years to get into this mess, so it's going to take time to get us out,” she said. “I voted for him, and I'll do it again.”
The drumbeat for Obama to embrace a black agenda grew loudest Saturday, when PBS host Tavis Smiley convened a public meeting of prominent black activists and intellectuals in Chicago to demand policies tailored to the needs of blacks who have been hit disproportionately hard by the recession.
Obama has refused from the beginning of his candidacy to separate the solutions to black America's economic problems from the country's at large. After he settled into his presidency, this stance placed him at odds with activists and the Congressional Black Caucus who once were the voice of black America.
But now, “nobody can go to Obama and say, 'This is what African-Americans want,'” said David Bositis, an expert on black politics at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.
He called the debate an “awkward moment” for the CBC: “All of a sudden, there's someone else who represents African-Americans more, if you go by what African-Americans say, than they do.”

The social manipulators who are good at 'divide them and they will fail' propaganda so far have failed to find a real 'wedge issue' to turn the base. The only group who been thrown under the bus more than once appears to be the CBC.
When you can find where the media accurately quotes the CBC and NOT attributing 'anonymous' sources statements as the CBC, all the CBC have been saying, “Just because Congress is passing a bill with lots of $$dollars$$ signs and friendly sounding names it doesn't mean its beneficial for the AA community.
Bills with good sounding names and lots of $$dollars$$ contributes to the 60% difference of median income in households where the laws are written so that AA's enmasse will not receive relief.

The U.S. Department of Justice has convinced Wachovia bank to pay the government $160 million for allowing its foreign exchange houses in Mexico to launder drug money.
Wachovia, now owned by Wells Fargo, admitted to permitting $110 million to be wired from the U.S. to south of the border from 2004-2007 to buy aircraft for drug cartels. But the laundering may have been even greater, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration, which claimed Wachovia failed to keep track of $420 billion in transactions by Mexican exchange houses.
The $160 million fine represents the biggest penalty ever imposed under the Bank Secrecy Act, which requires financial institutions to carefully track transactions to detect suspicious activity.
Jeffrey H. Sloman, the U.S. Attorney whose Southern District of Florida office led the investigation, said, “Wachovia's blatant disregard for our banking laws gave international cocaine cartels a virtual carte blanche to finance their operations by laundering at least $110 million in drug proceeds. Corporate citizens, no matter how big or powerful, must be held accountable for their actions.”

Decades after the war was won, the two veterans battled historical ignorance, racial exclusion and the numbing power of silence.
World War II veterans Charles Norman Shay and William Holloman challenged those forces during a moving panel discussion Saturday in New Orleans on the final day of the National World War II Museum's latest international conference on the conflict.
The two men, one an American Indian and the other African-American, described their wartime and life experiences in a session titled “People of Color in a White Man's Army.”
Shay, a former combat medic who is now an elder in Maine's Penobscot tribe, said he returned home to a country that would not let him vote and seemed oblivious to the fact that thousands of American Indians had served their country. He did not speak of his experiences in World War II for 60 years.
Holloman, a Tuskegee Airman and one of the first black pilots to serve in the Army Air Forces, fought for the right to fight for his country, as he put it.

Shay grew weary of the exclusion of Indians from the narrative of World War II — including the 60th anniversary celebrations of D-Day and a book on Maine veterans. He wondered: “Is it racism? Or is it ignorance?”
“In this last season of my life, I realized I have an obligation to educate the American public about our contributions and sacrifices for American freedom,” he said.
Holloman, a native of St. Louis, was 17 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. He immediately tried to enlist. “They told me to go home until I grew up,” he said.
Holloman entered the war late, not long after Congress forced the Army Air Forces to form an all-black combat unit. In his group of 22 pilots, the average age was 20. “We thought there was nothing like us, and that when Adolf Hitler heard about us, he quit,” Holloman said of the war's last days.
As some of the U.S. military's first African-American pilots, the young men also felt intense pressure to perform. “We were very careful of our conduct,” Holloman said. “We were brainwashed to the point of not making mistakes.”
Holloman went on to serve as the first black helicopter pilot in the Air Force, and to fly in Korea and later in Vietnam.
He, too, would later encounter histories, books and popular opinion that ignored or twisted the role minorities played in fighting the war.
“Historians, I believe, write history for themselves,” he said, adding that “this country was built on the backs of the Native Americans and black slaves.”
But Shay and Holloman said they encountered little to no discrimination while in the military. When traveling as a captain in the late 1940s, “people treated me like I was white because I was a captain,” Holloman said.
One woman asked him: “Captain, someone told me that you are colored. Are you colored?”
And once Shay decided to speak out about his experiences, he rediscovered an unspoken understanding with his fellow veterans. “There is a unique feeling of shared history,” he said. “We did not need to exchange stories. We know more than words could ever express.”

The chairman of the Democratic caucus in the House says his party has the 216 votes needed to pass President Barack Obama's historic health care bill.
Speaking Sunday on ABC's “This Week,” Connecticut Rep. John Larson said, in his words, “We have the votes now — as we speak.”
House Democrats are predicting that a rare Sunday session will produce one of the most significant legislative triumphs in decades: passage of a bill to overhaul the nation's health care system to provide coverage to millions of people.
Republicans resolutely oppose the bill.

Organizers for Sunday's planned march for immigrants' rights in Washington say they are reaching out to blacks for unity.
The Washington Post said the campaign for marchers includes ads East Coast urban radio stations. “Everyone has been hurt by the economy, especially African Americans and immigrants. The truth is, together you can demand real change,” the ads say.
The reach-out campaign “is a reflection of a much deeper connection between African American constituencies and immigrant constituencies,” said Deepak Bhargava. Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change, which is helping to plan the march, told the Post, “In the last year, there's been a ton of work done on the ground where immigrants and African Americans have worked together on a range of issues, from the jobs crisis to the foreclosure crisis.”
However, the issue of job competition remains, said Vernon Briggs. Briggs is a professor emeritus of industrial and labor relations at Cornell University who favors low immigration rates.
“What we have got here is people using immigration as a political issue to unite certain segments of the population, regardless of the economic and labor market impact,” Briggs told the Post. “In my view, African American workers are the most adversely affected of all groups, but many legal immigrants in the Hispanic community are also severely impacted because they are disproportionately in the low-skilled labor market where the illegal immigrants compete.”

Via Eric Martin, Marc Ambinder says:
A close reading of the [Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010] suggests it would allow the U.S. military to detain U.S. citizens without trial indefinitely in the U.S. based on suspected activity
He's wrong. The bill does not “allow the U.S. military to detain U.S. citizens without trial indefinitely”. It requires it. It's not optional.
Section 2(a) of the bill (pdf):
MILITARY CUSTODY REQUIREMENT.—Whenever within the United States, its territories, and possessions, or outside the territorial limits of the United States, an individual is captured or otherwise comes into the custody or under the effective control of the United States who is suspected of engaging in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners through an act of terrorism, or by other means in violation of the laws of war, or of purposely and materially supporting such hostilities, and who may be an unprivileged enemy belligerent, the individual shall be placed in military custody for purposes of initial interrogation and determination of status in accordance with the provisions of this Act.

This means that anyone, U.S. citizen or not, who is simply suspected of engaging in terrorism or “of purposely and materially supporting such hostilities” must be turned over to the military.
I know I am using italics a lot. I think this warrants it.
Section 3(b)(3):
A individual who is suspected of being an unprivileged enemy belligerent shall not, during interrogation under this subsection, be provided the statement required by Miranda v. Arizona (384 U.S. 436 (1966)) or otherwise be informed of any rights that the individual may or may not have to counsel or to remain silent consistent with Miranda v. Arizona.
I'm disappointed. Every self-respecting enemy belligerent, even unprivileged ones, know the Miranda warnings. This section should have read:
A individual who is suspected of being an unprivileged enemy belligerent shall be provided with the following statement:
“We can do anything we want to you, and no one can stop us. We can rape you, we can burn you, we can kill you. And we're going to enjoy it.”
At least that would have the virtue of honesty, if no other.
After the initial detention:
The bill asks the President to determine criteria for designating an individual as a “high-value detainee” if he/she: (1) poses a threat of an attack on civilians or civilian facilities within the U.S. or U.S. facilities abroad; (2) poses a threat to U.S. military personnel or U.S. military facilities; (3) potential intelligence value; (4) is a member of al Qaeda or a terrorist group affiliated with al Qaeda or (5) such other matters as the President considers appropriate. The President must submit the regulations and guidance to the appropriate committees of Congress no later than 60 days after enactment.
To the extent possible, the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Team must make a preliminary determination whether the detainee is an unprivileged enemy belligerent within 48 hours of taking detainee into custody.
The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Team must submit its determination to the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General after consultation with the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General make a final determination and report the determination to the President and the appropriate committees of Congress. In the case of any disagreement between the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General, the President will make the determination.
An “unprivileged enemy combatant” is anyone who is not a “privileged combatant”; i.e., anyone not in uniform. In other words, any civilian labeled “enemy combatant” is automatically an “unprivileged enemy combatant”.
How long may such person be held? Section 5:
An individual, including a citizen of the United States, determined to be an unprivileged enemy belligerent under section 3(c)(2) in a manner which satisfies Article 15 of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War may be detained without criminal charges and without trial for the duration of hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners in which the individual has engaged, or which the individual has purposely and materially supported, consistent with the law of war and any authorization for the use of military force provided by Congress pertaining to such hostilities.

A TIMELINE OF EVENTS…. Several readers have asked what the schedule looks like for today, in terms of what votes are likely to happen when. It's been tough to put together a timeline, and scrapping “deem and pass” means the process will take a bit longer.
CBS News, however, put this timeline together, which is consistent with what I'm hearing from Hill aides:
2 p.m.: The House will debate for one hour the rules of debate for the reconciliation bill and the Senate bill.
3 p.m.: The House will vote to end debate and vote on the rules of the debate.
3:15 p.m.: The House will debate the reconciliation package for two hours.
5:15 p.m.: The House will vote on the reconciliation package.
5:30 p.m.: The House will debate for 15 minutes on a Republican substitute and then vote on the substitute.
6 p.m.: The House will vote on the final reconciliation package.
6:15 p.m.: If the reconciliation bill passes, the House will immediately vote on the Senate bill, without debate.
Also note, if the House approves the Senate bill, it will go directly to the White House. It's possible, if not likely, that President Obama would sign it into law this evening.
But if the vote counting goes poorly for the Democratic leadership today, it's also possible that Speaker Pelosi could delay a vote until tomorrow (or later), if she decides the votes aren't there and she needs more time to get them.
For now, however, the timeline published by CBS looks about right. It's subject to revision, of course, but it's something to keep in mind as you plan your day.”

BREAKING: Not a Done Deal, But…

John Larson, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, tells ABC News' Jonathan Karl this morning that 216 of his members have committed to vote “yes” on the Senate's health care bill.
Other House Democratic leaders say the issue isn't settled. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer tells NBC's David Gregory that “there are still members looking at it,” with final commitments not yet nailed down. But multiple sources tell TNR that, by the time the House votes this afternoon or evening, the Democrats are likely to have at least 216 votes.
Keep in mind that even formal whip counts can predict final vote tallies inaccurately. People change their minds, back out of deals, or surprise their colleagues by leaving for Florida. In other words, you don't really have the votes until the votes have been cast.
But if 216 Democrats really do say “aye,” that would be enough to pass the Senate bill, readying it for presidential signature and enactment. Health care reform would become law of the land, while amendments to the bill would go to the Senate for consideration there.
The clincher in the House would be a deal on abortion rights, negotiated over the last few days and late into Saturday night. Under the agreement, President Obama would issue an executive order applying the Hyde amendment to the new insurance exchanges.
As you know, Democrats who oppose abortion rights, led by Michigan Representative Bart Stupak, were threatening to vote “no” because they believed reform might allow federal funds to finance abortion services. The Hyde amendment, which is part of existing law, prohibits that.
Applying it to the exchanges is apparently enough to convince some of those wavering Democrats–including Stupak, who is telling reporters he thinks such a deal could work, and Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who just announced her intent to vote “yes.” Leaders of the pro-choice caucus in Congress, who had been threatening to oppose reform over concessions to Stupak, have said they can support this deal because it merely reaffirms existing law.

Following reports yesterday that black and openly gay Democratic lawmakers were subjected to spitting and epithets from anti-health care reform protesters outside the Capitol, Republican leaders said Sunday that such incidents were “isolated” and “reprehensible.”
On CNN's “State of the Union,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) denounced the use of such slurs “in the strongest terms possible.”
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), said on NBC's “Meet the Press” that the “isolated incidents” were “reprehensible.”
Later on the same program, Michael Steele, the Republican National Committee's first black chairman, agreed that the incidents were “reprehensible,” and added, “we do not support that.”
“What you had out there yesterday were a handful of people who just got stupid and said some ignorant things,” Steele said.

David Plouffe and Karl Rove went head to head on ABC's 'This Week' this morning on the subject of health care reform. A transcript of the heated debate, from Politico's Mike Allen:
Plouffe: “The politics of this, by the way: If we pass this, we're in much better shape, politically, in the Democratic Party than we are today. Because we're going to go out there and not just talk about what WE'RE for, but what the Republicans are voting against: They are siding with the insurance companies over people who are denied coverage for preexisting conditions, siding with the insurance companies over saving seniors money. So this isn't just about us being a piñata here in the election. Elections are about choice. They are voting against an enormous tax cut for health care for 40 million middle-class families and 4 million small businesses — that's what they're voting against. … We are going to be much better positioned politically — now, that's secondary to what's right for the country — if we pass this. By the way, we had 15 million new voters vote in the 2008 election. OK, these are people are cynical that their vote really matters. If we don't pass health care, I think that sends a very depressing message. But it's going to be a very powerful message to them that their vote matters and they ought to stay involved in politics.”
Rove: “This thing is paid for with Bernie-Madoff-style accounting. … It's a gigantic disaster.”
Plouffe: “Karl and the Republicans would be familiar with that.”
Rove: “You will bankrupt the country if this bill passes. … For God's sake, will you stop throwing around epitaphs [sic] and deal with the facts for once, David? … We will fight the election on this,. and the Democrats will have significant losses in the House and Senate as a result of this bill.”
Plouffe: “If Karl and a lot of Republicans want to call the election already, they ought to break out that 'Mission Accomplished' banner.”

Yes Rikyrah, I think it's a done deal too. I heard yesterday from one of the pundits that the POTUS has contingency plans waiting based on various scenarios. Like if the vote gets close and he needs one or two more to put it over the top, Obama is prepared to sign an Executive Order ensuring stronger controls over the abortion language if he has to, so he can get the votes of some of the blue dog holdouts. So, he has plans A thru Z if the need arises.

Of the many reasons to oppose health care reform, this is probably the worst one yet. From today’s Washington Post:
Former Republican House speaker Newt Gingrich said Obama and the Democrats will regret their decision to push for comprehensive reform. Calling the bill “the most radical social experiment . . . in modern times,” Gingrich said: “They will have destroyed their party much as Lyndon Johnson shattered the Democratic Party for 40 years” with the enactment of civil rights legislation in the 1960s.
So by Gingrich’s logic, lawmakers should really just shy away from the toughest issues of the day because changes in the status quo might haunt their political careers. And this guy wants to be president?

The mud wrestling over existing abortion law is surreal when compared to all of the human suffering in this country today from food insecurity (folks are going hungry), the uninsured, millions who are homeless, overflowing homeless shelter, and unemployment that will not dissipate for another 5-10 years.

I fully concur The _A. I have always believed that Barack Hussein Obama was preordained for such a time as this. Nothing has stopped his trek to destiny, to help those less fortunate than he. We cannot live in fear;Obama surely doesn't. We walk by faith, not by sight and surely not by threats.
