I have to invoke the obvious here: some racist white guy isn't comfortable rooming with a Black guy. That's OK, just 'cause he isn't comfortable? Or some anti Semite doesn't want to bunk with a Jew? It goes on and on. Pretty soon the armed forces have to give everyone a private room in their own private Idaho. Really, where do you draw the line?

Apples and oranges. Your example is temporary which I still wouldn't agree with btw. When I was stationed in Okinawa the first roommate I had was for 11 months. The real question is why would you force someone to room with someone that they are uncomfortable with? If woman says she isn't comfortable rooming with a man? You don't ask why? “But there's no threat of rape or harassment.” How is in the world would you know that? Do people who sexually harass others walk around with a big sign that I didn't notice?

I have shared rooms with male colleagues in work/travel situations and it was fine. And I'd be fine with my daughter doing the same. As long as there's no threat of rape or harrassment, what's the dif?

Like I said before I think the present policy is the wrong one. I don't think the policy should be kept and homosexuals should be able to serve openly. I don't want to sleep in the same room with another man who could possible be sexually attracted to me. That's why I would be uncomfortable. Now if I don't know that he is gay that's one thing but if I know that he is it's just not going to work for me. Go to war with him….FINE. Go to work with him…FINE. Share a 2 man room and/or tent with them…. not going to happen. You wouldn't make a woman share a tent or room with a man. You wouldn't make your daughter share a room/tent with man. So why would be different with me. I'm prejudice? I think not. It's not about fear. It's about being comfortable in my sleeping quarters.

I apologize for offending, that wasn't my intention. Please understand, I'm not asking questions rhetorically, I genuinely want to know why you feel the way you do, because I just don't understand it. People are losing careers because of these sorts of feelings, and some vague feeling of discomfort isn't a good enough reason to keep this policy. Why is it not silly? What is the fear here?

See that's your insensitivity if I was a woman you would never say something like that. There would be blood in the streets if someone made a female room with a male and she objected. No its not silly. It's a valid objection. I don't have feel to feel uncomfortable because I disagree with the way you look at the world.

I honestly don't know where you're going, and I'd like to know because I think you're perspective is invaluable in this debate.

I can understand your discomfort with shared living spaces, but I think its a bit silly. “Openly gay” is not synonymous with “sexually predatory,” and I imagine in the military the rules on sexual advances are even more strict than in standard society. So, like lizadiamond asked, how's it hurt you, even if he does take a good look? “Because some soldiers would feel uncomfortable” is not a good enough reason to discriminate.

Well, aren't you full of comedy today. I'm not sending out pics out because for one my girl would kill me and two I don't want to break up any happy homes.:) All jokes aside. I think people should be comfortable in their own space and personally I wouldn't feel comfortable if I shared a room with an openly gay man. Just like I don't think a woman should be forced to live with a male. That's all. I don't have anything against gay folks they should be allowed to get married and be as unhappy as the rest of us. My girlfriend has a few gay friends besides their limp wrists they're just like the rest of us.

Edit: One last thing. If I have an openly gay roommate that's how rumors get started. The military is one of the most anti-gay and homophobic organizations in world especially the Marine Corps. What If I come back to the barracks and he has his boyfriend over? You see where I'm going with this?

Even if he took a good look, how's that going to hurt you? Frankly, for the most part, gay guys aren't all that interested in straight guys anyway. As to why you couldn't share a room with a female soldier, I suppose IF you behaved yourself it wouldn't make that much difference. They did it on Battlestar Gallactica.

Actually, the army is just like the Marines(which i was in btw) and they have rooms inside a barracks. And I'm sure I've shared a “squadbay” with a homosexual but I've never shared a room with a homosexual man. I wouldn't feel comfortable lounging around with my shirt off. And it's not prejudice if I don't want to share a room with a homosexual man. Why won't they let me share a room with a female soldier? Isn't that prejudice as well?

I don't think the army has rooms. I'm pretty sure they have barracks. And chances are if you were in the army you'd already have shared your quarters with gay guys. Everyone's there to do a job, right? Drop the prejudice already.

I don't think rape is any more or less pervasive in the military than any other segment of society. Most rapes goes unreported anyway so the numbers that “experts” cite are at best flawed.

I can't wait for the fall out from this decision. It is going to be a dooozy. There is no way to explain why it should not be repealed..but once the incident reports start coming in...well...then all of a sudden it will be self-explanatory.

Female soldiers already are being raped by their superior male soldier counterparts at alarmingly frequency. Males being raped by their superior officers will be a whole new twist.

Wonder how much coverup that will entail after all despite reports of females being raped, women still volunteer for the military...wonder how many males will volunteer for the military after reports of rape by their superior officers because known.

I firgure as many will volunteer for the military as they do for prison.

Yup...ain't no way anyone can explain why repealing this policy is logical...nope ain't no way.

I don't get the rationale behind DADT, either. Drop the damn law and let's move on to something that deserves a whole lot of talk.

This law should've been repealed long ago and now we want to drag our feet and give those who oppose room to block it too. I don't even understand the logical opposition to repealing DADT.

I'm sure McCain will help me with that, though.
