She has performed internationally and won numerous awards. Her recordings of both classical and popular music have also received awards.

She was born Measha Gosman to Anne Eatmon and Sterling Gosman of Fredericton, New Brunswick.[1] As a child, Gosman began singing in the choir of her local Baptist church. She studied voice and piano from the age of seven. As a teen, she took voice lessons in her home town, and spent summers on scholarships at the Boston Conservatory and at a choral camp in Rothesay, New Brunswick.[1] She studied for one year with New Brunswick soprano Wendy Nielson, before moving on to studies at the University of Toronto, where she obtained a B.Mus. She went to Germany for five years, where she pursued a Master's degree at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany.[1]

She married Markus Brügger, born in Switzerland. They first met in high school, when he was an exchange student in New Brunswick. When they married, they combined their last names to Brüggergosman (also spelled Brueggergosman).[1]

In 2007, Brueggergosman discovered her family's deep history in Canada and the United States. Her paternal 4xgreat-grandparents were John Gosman and his wife Rose, African Americans who escaped from slavery in the United States during the American Revolution by going to British lines.[2] John was from Connecticut and Rose from Rhode Island.[3] They probably met in New York, where they joined the British. The British gave freedom to American slaves who left rebel slaveholders and fought with them. Thousands of slaves took advantage of the war's chaos to escape.

After the war, the British arranged transport to Nova Scotia for nearly 3500 Black Loyalists from the former Thirteen Colonies. John and Rose Gosman, and their five-month-old daughter Fanny, born free in British lines, were recorded in the British embarkation record known as the Book of Negroes. They had passage in 1783 on one of the last ships to leave New York for Nova Scotia.[4] Measha's 4xgreat-grandparents first lived in Shelburne, but later settled in Fredericton. Brueggergosman learned of her African-American roots on Who Do You Think You Are, a British-based program bought by the CBC. According to DNA genetic testing (which her brother participated in), it is likely their direct-line paternal African ancestors came from the Bassa people of Cameroon.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Measha_Brueggergosman

someone asked for the name of the Black opera singer in CANADA for the Olympic Opening Ceremony:

Measha Brueggergosman

Measha Brueggergosman (born Measha Gosman on June 28, 1977 in Fredericton, New Brunswick) is a Canadian soprano who performs both as an opera singer and concert artist. His bond was later revoked and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The revelations represent another twist in the drama surrounding the church workers from Idaho, who have been jailed for trying to take 33 children from Haiti without permission after the earthquake ripped through Port-au-Prince on January 12.

It’s unclear how the 32-year-old Torres Puello became involved with the Central Valley Baptist Church, or when he met the group’s controversial leader, Laura Silsby.

But his stepfather, Franco Cerminara, said his son had no intention of taking the children to the United States, but to a church in the Dominican Republic, where space had already been leased.

Cerminara added that he went with his son to take food and medication to the jailed church workers. Torres Puello could not be reached Saturday for comment.

For the past 10 days, Torres Puello has been a visible figure in the church case, granting interviews with reporters about his role as legal adviser to the group. But little was known about his background until Friday, when Salvadoran police announced an investigation into whether Torres Puello was the same suspect who led the notorious trafficking ring.

Using photographs and fingerprints, police say they are close to confirming Torres Puello is the same suspect wanted since last year for leading a large network that recruited children for prostitution in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

In the interview with The Herald, Torres Puello’s mother confirmed that her son’s wife — Ana Josefa Galvarina Ramirez Orellana — was already convicted in the case and remains in jail in San Salvador.

Police broke the ring last year after three children, 14, 15 and 16, escaped from a house in El Salvador and went to the police to report they had been forced to pose naked to promote the enterprise.

Jesus, Son-of-the-living-God,

Make him pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man advising Idaho detainees in Haiti is confirmed as suspect in child prostitution case

http://www.idahostatesman.com/newsupdates/story…

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The man providing legal advice to American church workers charged with trying to take children out of Haiti did jail time in the United States years before emerging as the key suspect in a child prostitution ring in El Salvador, according records and interviews.

The mother and stepfather of Jorge Anibal Torres Puello told The Miami Herald in an extensive interview Saturday the fugitive wanted by Salvadoran police was their son, who has been advising the church volunteers in the unfolding legal drama.

“That’s him,” a teary Ana Puello said from her modest home in the outskirts of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. “But those things they say about him, I doubt they’re true. … He told me, ’Mami, I swear I didn’t.’ He would never hurt a child.”

Though his wife was convicted in the case, Torres Puello left the country — wanted by Salvadoran police — before ending up in Haiti.

A self-styled lawyer with no law degree, Torres Puello has had other brushes with the law, including a charge in Miami in 1999 for possessing fake documents, records show. Great Victory for Organic Consumers & Farmers! Hotlist
by Jill Richardson [Subscribe]
Digg this! Share this on Twitter - Hooray! Great Victory for Organic Consumers & Farmers!Tweet this submit to reddit Share This
Sat Feb 13, 2010 at 06:19:39 PM PST

Yesterday the Fridays news dump brought some BIG news! For a long time now, factory dairy farms have been able to pass themselves off as "organic" through a loophole in the organic standards. The animals had to have "access" to the outdoors, but they didn't have to actually go outside or graze on grass. This meant that the REAL organic dairy farmers were at a competitive disadvantage because factory dairy farms could produce milk more cheaply. And it harmed consumers, who were not getting the product they thought they were paying for. Dairy products from cows that graze on grass is healthier than dairy from cows fed only grain.

This all changed yesterday, with the publication of a new rule that requires organic dairy to come from cows that graze on grass! It goes into effect June 17 of this year. Great Victory for Organic Consumers & Farmers!Tweet this submit to reddit Share This
Sat Feb 13, 2010 at 06:19:39 PM PST

Yesterday the Fridays news dump brought some BIG news! For a long time now, factory dairy farms have been able to pass themselves off as “organic” through a loophole in the organic standards. The animals had to have “access” to the outdoors, but they didn't have to actually go outside or graze on grass.

Details below… and even more details available on my blog

* Jill Richardson's diary :: ::
*

First of all, I should be clear that the grass-fed vs. grain-fed issue is not black and white. But Marla Caplon worried about a more fundamental problem: How would students eat?

The two snowstorms that pummeled the region, leaving more than 3 feet of snow in some areas, deprived tens of thousands of children from Virginia to Pennsylvania of the free or reduced-price school lunch that may be their only nutritious meal of the day. The nonprofits that try to meet the need when school is not in session also closed their doors for much of the week, leaving many families looking at bare cupboards. And many parents working hourly jobs were unable to earn any money during the week, as the snow forced businesses to close.

Caplon is a food services supervisor for Montgomery County Public Schools, where about 43,000 children are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Some also get breakfast, dinner and bags of staple foods to take home for the weekend. The snow days meant children would get none of that until Tuesday, because schools are closed Monday for Presidents Day.

"We've been bothered by this all week," Caplon said.

So Caplon arranged for Manna Food Center, a local food bank whose board she chairs, to bring boxes of food Friday to two still-closed elementary schools. Officials used the school district's automated phone system to notify parents of the distribution.

Short on food
At Rolling Terrace Elementary School, a stream of people walked up to a Manna truck in the school's bus bay Friday. They filled plastic shopping bags with cans of soup, vegetables and beans, ground beef and Rice Krispy Treats.

"Everybody's at home, and everybody's eating," said Jacquelyn Garcia, 39, who came to pick up food for her family of five. "I have nothing left in my house."

Manna's effort brought out smiles and expressions of gratitude. But the approximately 200 families who came to pick up provisions represent just a fraction of the need in Montgomery County, let alone the entire snow-battered region.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35384779/ns/weather/

Snow days mean less food for many students
Tens of thousands of children miss out on free or reduced-price school lunch

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – As back-to-back snowstorms shuttered schools for the week across the mid-Atlantic states, parents fretted about lost learning time, administrators scheduled makeup days and teachers posted assignments online.
