Speaking as “Whitey” (really drawteel – how is that helpful?), I am just wondering what is better, the media falling in line behind Harry Reid and pronouncing the whole affair “over” or Fox news speaking against it? I learned long ago that the truth was “somewhere in the middle”, which means that the only way you can really know and embrace the truth is to study both opinions.

I would like to see the family maintain control over their mother and father's legacy. I would not like to see whitey gets his hands on it so he can distort and twist our history like he has everything else. I agree that Long is way out of the mainstream with his homophobic statements about gays.

It's been pretty obvious because of the fights over the King Center and over the will of their mother--and of course, the money.

Bernice, Alveda and MLK III want to take the King Center and make it a pulpit for their conservative politics. Bernice and Alveda's mentor is Bishop Eddie Long, who runs a mega-church in the area. He was a part of the black church that refused to go along with the activism that marked the black church in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies. Alveda and Bernice were a part of that infamous anti-gay march in Atlanta several years ago, from which Coretta had to personally disentangle her and her husband's name.

They've been very vociferous about not selling the Center to the government to make a park or a national monument (which is what they really should do). Yolanda and their mother are gone, and Dexter is ailing. These three comprised the liberal wing of the family. Dexter may not be able to preside over the King money for much longer, because of all of the feuding about seeing the books, and whether Dexter was feathering his own nest.

With enough money and stubbornness, they may yet get their way.

It would be Rev. Alveda King–she's a winger along with her cousin Rev. Bernice King. That's exactly the direction they would like to bring the King Center as well. Dig deep enough, and you'll find somebody to say just about anything.
