Call it the $4 billion boycott.

By boycotting a key House committee vote last week and threatening to abandon support for banking regulations, members of the Congressional Black Caucus got $4 billion added to legislation to overhaul government oversight of Wall Street.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., this week inserted $3 billion to the legislation to provide low-interest loans to unemployed homeowners in danger of foreclosure. He added $1 billion for neighborhood revitalization programs.

A concerted effort to push reps at district and state levels will accomplish far more than these now common place but pointless liberal rant against Obama. But everyone always seems to think their rep is great, its the other guy.

I remember seeing him in Delaware, and seeing how hopeful folks were….finally things were going to change.I remember weeping after Iowa and New Hampshire….and after casting my primary and election date votes. I remember election night and inauguration. Yeah, I remember.

And no offense, but if you've never watched the show, maybe you should before taking what this writer says at face value.

This is a pet peeve of mine, and why I try not to read articles/reviews/commentaries on things I plan to see or hear like movie/tv/music, cause once you do, it colors your own perception of the movies/tv/etc. In other words, if you've never seen the show, and read that article, if you watch the show now, then you would be subconsciously looking for the supposed “racist” elements that this author speaks of.

This is significant: Jacob Hacker, a kind of godfather of the public option, basically endorsed the Medicare buy-in compromise in an interview, describing it as a public option on its own terms and an “enormous positive”:

The way I would describe it is, in sort of Dickensian terms, is it’s a tale of two public options. Public option one, the public option that was going to be within the exchange and available to Americans on day one to create competition for private insurance plans to give people a choice, that public option has been replaced, in my mind, with an inadequate substitute, a national system of private plans.

But public option two, which was never on the agenda before, a buy-in to the actual Medicare program for 55- to 64-year-olds, is an enormous positive development. It’s actually the original idea, if you will, for the public option, simply letting people get into the Medicare program that provides broad, secure coverage at an affordable price.

Hacker did temper his praise a bit for the overall Senate compromise, saying that the plan for a national nonprofit was unlikely to “provide the choice and competition that President Obama spoke about.”

Still, Hacker’s seal of approval on the Medicare buy-in — and his description of it as a public option in its own right — could make easier for liberals to swallow the compromise as a legit substitute for the public plan upon which they have staked so much prestige and political capital.
