[A candidate running for Orlando City Council on a law-and-order ticket was arrested Thursday night on charges of drug trafficking, jail records show.

Ezell Harris, who announced a campaign to unseat incumbent Commissioner Daisy Lynum earlier this year, was booked on charges related to the sale of the prescription narcotic hydrocodone.

Harris has a campaign website that promises to “promote public safety” and stresses the dangers of prescription narcotics, but he’s now being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,400 bail.

Jail records show he is being held on four counts: trafficking in hydrocodone, dispensing illegal drugs without a license, unlawful use of a two-way radio, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Details of the case were not immediately available from the Orlando Police Department, though investigators believe he was selling Lorcet and Vicodin – brand names of hydrocodone -- that had been prescribed to him. According to his website, he served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army for three years in the late 1970s, and was classified as disabled in 1980.

Lynum said she was aware that Harris, 50, had been the focus of a drug investigation.

“This man has been under investigation for months,” Lynum said. “His clients are the ones who alerted us to his behavior. I’m really shocked he would try to pass himself off as an upstanding member of the community.”

Harris has been one of Lynum’s loudest critics for at least eight years. Since he launched his campaign at a Tea Party rally earlier this year, he frequently spoke at City Council meetings, denouncing his opponent as corrupt.

He also has been critical of Police Chief Val Demings, starting a website blasting her after her department-issue handgun was stolen from her car while it was parked in her driveway. That criticism was muted when Demings threatened to sue.]

Sources with access to Palin have indeed told to me that the Wasilla whack-job was an obsessive reader of this blog as it dared to ask factual questions about her past that could be easily answered. I have no way of knowing this myself, and regard it as odd that a vice-presidential candidate would be hell-bent on suing a blogger who, presumably, was merely making a total ass of himself in wondering if Palin's surreal account of her last pregnancy was factually accurate.

Or is there something there - of some unknown sort - that she desperately wanted to intimidate and suppress? As Bubble would note: "Who can say?" What can Levi possibly mean that "she knows what I got on her?"

The MSM won't touch this, of course.

But here's the WSJ piece. Money quote:

At one point, according to people familiar with the discussions, Ms. Palin considered pursuing a libel suit against at least one blogger, the Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan. Ms. Palin decided against such a move because of the publicity it would bring.

Mr. Sullivan, in response, said asking "factually verifiable questions is obviously not libel."

A spokeswoman for Ms. Palin didn't respond to email requests seeking comment.

And so the pattern of refusing to be accountable on anything continues.

US President Barack Obama said yesterday a strong and prosperous China can be a source of strength for all nations and the United States does not want to contain China.

Obama made the remarks while in Tokyo, Japan. He then flew to Singapore later in the day for the APEC summit.

"No one nation can meet the challenges of the 21st century on its own. We welcome China's appearance on the world stage," Obama said while delivering his Asian policy speech.

"The US does not seek to contain China ... The rise of a strong and prosperous China can be a source of strength for the community of nations," said Obama.

He added his country will deal with China with its own interests in mind, but it is precisely for this reason that it is important to cooperate with China on issues of common concern, as "the United States and China will both be better off if we meet them (the challenges of the 21st century) together."

In the speech, Obama praised China's engagement on key issues including Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Korean Peninsula and vowed to work to deepen strategic talks with Beijing.

He also denied deeper relations with China means weaker bilateral relations with Japan.

Obama declared his nation will aim to sustain leadership in Asia while working in tandem with nations such as China.

"In an interconnected world, power does not need to be a zero-sum game. Nations need not fear the success of another. By cultivating spheres of cooperation, not competing in spheres of influence, will lead to progress in the Asia Pacific," he said.

"As America's first Pacific president, I promise you that this Pacific nation will strengthen and sustain our leadership in this part of the world," said Obama, referring to the role he hopes the US will play in the region.

Obama is on a nine-day tour of Asia.

there's a discussion over at Coates about how come all the ' positive' people in Precious' life are light-skinned, when clearly, one of the themes of the book was Precious finding a dark-skinned, locked positive role model that shows her that someone that looks like HER-skin tone wise- could be positive. I thought the WSJ might be different. Maybe they would be strong and full of courage like the city they work in. Nope. They saved it for the very end, but they wet their bed anyway.

Terrorists also love a big stage, and none come bigger than New York. Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called 20th hijacker, made his civilian trial a spectacle. Not even the best judge can entirely stop KSM and others from doing the same. And Mr. Holder has invited grave and needless security risks by tempting jihadists the world over to strike Manhattan while the trial is in session.

Boo-fucking-hoo. You know who has faced grave security risks ever since 9/11? Our armed forces, that's who. So, stop whining. You want the typical response from New Yorkers? Here it is:

Most Americans, we suspect, can overlook the legal niceties and see this episode through the lens of common sense. Foreign terrorists who wage war on America and everything it stands for have no place sitting in a court of law born of the values they so detest. Four teenage girls and two men suspected of stealing jewelry and clothing from the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and other celebrities have been tagged with a few tantalizing names since their purported crime spree came to light. “The Burglar Bunch,” trumpeted TMZ. “The Bling Ring,” rhymed The Los Angeles Times. The “Hollywood Hills Burglars,” said the Los Angeles police.

The group, most 18 and 19 years old, used celebrity Web sites, according to investigators, to figure out when their victims — a roster of young Hollywood that also includes Rachel Bilson of “The O.C.,” Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” fame and Audrina Patridge of “The Hills”— would be attending premieres and other events and would therefore not be home.

In the stars’ homes, burglars helped themselves to Rolex watches, Louis Vuitton bags and other baubles featured in celebrity magazines, authorities say.

Six accused members of the ring have been charged with residential burglary and other crimes, including one, Alexis Neiers, who was arrested on the set of a reality show pilot she is filming for E! with her sister Tess Taylor, a Playboy model.

The ‘Highly Qualified Teacher’ Dodge

Education Secretary Arne Duncan has been widely held in high regard since he was appointed in January, but no honeymoon lasts forever. Mr. Duncan’s came to an abrupt end earlier this week when he issued long-awaited rules that the states must follow to apply for his $4.3 billion discretionary fund, known as the Race to the Top Fund, and the second round of federal financing under the $49 billion federal stimulus package known as the state fiscal stabilization fund.

The rules for the Race to the Top Fund, which is designed to reward states that embrace reform and bypass those that do not, are generally sound and have been greeted with enthusiasm. But some school reform groups and some in Congress have reacted with dismay to the part of the stabilization fund that was supposed to require the states to end the longstanding and reprehensible practice of shunting unprepared and unqualified teachers into the schools serving the poorest students.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 was clear in requiring states to remedy situations in which high poverty schools were being disproportionately staffed by teachers who were inexperienced, unqualified or teaching in fields that they had not majored in.

The country would be much further along on the reform trail had the Bush administration followed the law. Instead, it allowed the states to define away the problem by re-labeling the existing, inadequate teacher corps as “highly qualified.”

Congress tried to discourage the use of inexperienced and unqualified teachers a second time when it passed the stimulus act. Education advocates inside and outside Congress expected that the stabilization fund application would be explicit and ambitious on the issue of teacher equity. They were understandably disappointed to find the issue couched, once again, in euphemistic language that asks the states to describe in vague terms whether the teacher corps is “highly qualified.”

The Congressional Black Caucus is unhappy with this approach. The Education Trust, an influential research group that deals with reform issues, accused Mr. Duncan of papering over a serious problem and squandering an opportunity to force “truth-telling about unfair teacher-assignment practices.”

I think Mr Bush II passed the NO Child Left Behind Act in good faith and high expectations. The states on the other hand did just about everything they could to avoid complying with it. For example, California put off making required changes in the hope that the Act would be modified or repealed.
Mr Obama's Race to the Top program is just another attempt to overcome the political clout of the NEA. He has some leverage because states are broke and begging for money.

The A.P. says that in the book, Mrs. Palin also accuses the McCain campaign of keeping her away from reporters, which fed a perception that she was ignoring the media. She writes that she sat down with Katie Couric in part because she felt sorry for her, after Nicolle Wallace, a McCain aide, said Ms. Couric suffered from low self-esteem.

I still think the greatest charge against John McCain is that, in his world, Palin could have been president. A man who claims to put "Country First" was actually willing to put that country in Sarah Palin's hands. It's still incredibly shocking.

The Other Lesson Of Fort Hood, Ctd

The last fallen hero ramp ceremony I put together still stings in my memory.

Ramadan had just ended, it was the first few weeks of autumn. A few kilometers from our base one of our police mentoring teams (PMT) was almost attacked by a vehicle bourne improvised explosive device (VBIED). I say almost as the attack was thwarted by one of our HUMMV drivers who took evasive action. Unfortunately, this resulted in the rollover of the HUMMV which caused the death of the driver. I was at the mortuary when the MEDEVAC helicopter brought this young man's broken body in to be prepared for the journey home.

The rest of his team were brought to Bagram as well. They were very adamant that they be the ones to escort the fallen brother to the C17. Although dirty and disheveled from their encounter, I agreed as I am certain their brother would have had it no other way. To a man, they wanted me to know one essential fact about him: he was Muslim. They insisted that he be sent home with a Muslim cleric presiding. We had one at Bagram, a major who was an Islamic chaplain - in fact I had dinner with this man just a few nights prior. We were able to grant the PMT's request.

I do not have the words to adequately describe the emotion in the night air on the tarmac. Under a crescent moon the fallen hero was carried onto the C17 by his team brothers, followed by the honor guard, the Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major of the 101st Airborne, and of course the Muslim chaplain.

Anita Dunn Takes Parting Shot At Fox, Hannity And Beck

In a parting shot at Fox News, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn mocked the conservative-leaning network on Friday and laughed off its controversial host Glenn Beck for calling her a Mao enthusiast.

The outgoing administration spokeswoman took a clear and enjoyable dig, first at Sean Hannity for recently airing spliced footage designed to make a crowd of anti-health care protesters seem bigger than reality.

"A fun fact from this week is that an opinion show on a certain news network was using edited footage to make it appear that a rally last week, and political opposition to the president, was much larger than it appeared," said Dunn, during her appearance at the Bloomberg News Washington Summit. "Some of you may have heard about it. The people who went in and did fact checking on that, and actually exposed the spliced edited was... Jon Stewart of the 'Daily Show' on Comedy Central. Well that is where you are getting fact-checking and investigative journalism these days folks. It is a different media environment."

Showing an even greater appreciation for the "Daily Show"'s Fox News fact-checking abilities, Dunn referenced another Stewart triumph later in her question-and-answer session.

"Jon Stewart actually did one of the most amazing pieces of journalism last week or a couple of weeks ago," she said, "in which he looked at the way Fox, on their opinion shows, raises some issue that then gets reported on by their news division as 'a controversy.' ... Now, that's a point of view. That's fine. That's entertainment. It helps their ratings. But I think if you go downstairs and walk through the Newseum that's not traditionally what you think of as traditional news -- to some extent inventing the story."

First U.S. marijuana cafe opens in Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - The United States' first marijuana cafe opened on Friday, posing an early test of the Obama administration's move to relax policing of medical use of the drug.

The Cannabis Cafe in Portland, Oregon, is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it -- as long as they are out of public view -- despite a federal ban.

"This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members," said Madeline Martinez, Oregon's executive director of NORML, a group pushing for marijuana legalization.

"Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana," said Martinez. "We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College, based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis."

The cafe -- in a two-story building which formerly housed a speak-easy and adult erotic club Rumpspankers -- is technically a private club, but is open to any Oregon residents who are NORML members and hold an official medical marijuana card.

foxnewslogo Liberals cry unfair after Fox orders unbalanced YouTube purgeLiberal bloggers are accusing Fox News of launching an Internet war against them in a campaign to selectively remove Fox clips from YouTube.

On Wednesday, YouTube shut down the popular News1News channel, which featured news clips that many progressive bloggers and news sites would add to their stories. On the rare occasion, Raw Story also embedded News1News clips in stories having to do with media coverage. The channel provided clips from all news networks, but often focused on Fox's controversial commentators.

The decision to shut down News1News came after Fox News issued 150 take-down notices to the channel, which they are entitled to do under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, reports Adrian Chen at Gawker. YouTube's policy is to shut down any accounts that receive three or more take-down notices, so News1News was immediately pulled offline.

But Fox News' move appears to be limited to News1News, while other YouTube channels -- those viewed as having conservative leanings -- remain untouched. Chen points out that the Glenn Beck Daily Clips channel continues to operate, although it features 614 clips, as of last count, of Glenn Beck's Fox show. The Conservative Nation channel, with close to 200 clips, is also still online.

Thus, Fox's move will mostly affect stories posted on progressive-leaning blogs, such as Gawker, the Huffington Post and Truthdig, while leaving intact YouTube clips embedded at conservative Web sites. Instead of embedded video, visitors to those sites will now see a notice stating that the video in question is "no longer available."

Utah has emerged as an improbable battleground in the fight for the future of the GOP, as the party's veteran U.S. senator -- with nary a whiff of personal or political scandal -- has become one of the most threatened lawmakers up for reelection next year.

Robert F. Bennett is no Northeast liberal. Raised in Salt Lake City, he built a business, manufacturing day-planners, that made him wealthy. His grandfather was a president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His father served four Senate terms -- meaning that, combined with Bennett's own three terms, father and son have held the seat for the better part of 60 years.

Yet those very attributes -- longevity, seniority -- only compound the challenge facing Bennett, who, like other Republicans across the country, faces attack within the party from those who find him insufficiently conservative.

McCain Adviser Denies Palin’s Claim She Granted Couric Interview Because She Pitied Couric’s Low Self Esteem

One of the whackiest claims Sarah Palin makes in her new book is that she agreed to her disastrous interview with Katie Couric — a central event during Campaign 2008 — because a top McCain aide told her Couric had low self esteem, leading Palin to take pity on the CBS anchor.

A McCain adviser I just spoke to adamantly denied the claim, and provided a counter story: Palin was repeatedly urged by McCain aides to prepare for the interview, but refused.

Palin claims in her new book that she agreed to sit down with Couric partly because she felt sorry for her, after senior McCain adviser Nicolle Wallace told her that Couric suffered from self-esteem problems. It’s understandable that Palin would try to deflect blame for the interview: It was a disaster that hastened her unmasking as unqualified for the presidency.

“It’s not true,” the McCain adviser I just reached said, laughing heartily at the claim. “It’s ridiculous.”

The adviser also provided more details on the strategy the campaign adopted with Palin and the press, saying they feared making her available to groups of reporters because of her incompetence.

“She lacked the knowledge base to stand in front of the press corps that was traveling with her and answer questions,” the adviser said delicately. “Because of the success of the convention speech, the feeling was that she should be exposed to as many people as possible directly, not through a media filter. The way to do that was to do interviews with the anchors.”

“The truth is, she refused to prepare for the Katie Couric interview,” the adviser continued. “She refused to engage in any preparation. And it was a disaster.”

The adviser also mocked a contradiction at the core of Palin’s claims: She’s simultaneously saying she was muzzled and kept from the press, even as she’s claiming she only did the Couric interview at the urging of McCain aides.

“You were prevented from talking to all these reporters, and you’re mad about that,” the adviser said, chortling incredulously. “But you’re also mad about the interviews you did. It’s so full of contradictions that you don’t know where to begin.”

the thing about Palin is...she just doesn't get the ' benefit of the doubt'..not with all the stunts she's pulled from the beginning.

I see parts of the so called "progressive blogosphere" are now boycotting the OFA. The same so called "progressives" that supported John Edwards for President and who claim if it wasn't for them President Obama would not have become President ,who demand like spoilt brats that their needs be met now or they are taking their marbles and going home. My message to them - Screw them. Keep your money and don't let the door hit ya on the way out. I think their little boycott is having the opposite effect and is galvanising more support for the OFA who actually organise and do real work for change rather than spending all day on blogs making egocentric rants and constantly whining. Grab a mop and help get some work done or get the hell out of the way. If they no longer support the democratic party - good riddance.

Well, if you can stomach watching it, or even clicking a Fox News link, here's the link to the whole thing, broken up into three parts. I've watched the first one, and there's actually a little back-and-forth. Unfortunately, so far, the conversation seems to be a run-through of the usual tired memes ("Why do you call yourselves African Americans?").

Well, in the snippet of video at the link, no one lays into Beck. The audience catcalls the guy who says he voted for Obama because he thought he was the best candidate.

That guy made it easy for the crowd and host to mock him. Paraphrase (I voted for Barack because of change.) Come on even I chuckled a little bit. He made himself sound like an idiot and that's probably why they put him on the panel.

Well, whether or not he ultimately came off looking like an idiot depends on what he went on to say after the boos.

Embattled Pool Can't Stay Afloat

THE SUBJECT LINE on the e-mail simply reads, "The End."

As in, the end of the Valley Club, the small, sleepy Huntingdon Valley community pool that was thrust into the national spotlight this past summer, allegedly for discriminating against minority campers who'd signed up to swim there for 90 minutes each week.

Yesterday, Valley president John Duesler announced that the club's board of directors had voted 5-1 to file this week for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

As the financial meltdown demonstrated, derivatives do not reduce risk. They amplify it and spread it around interlocking networks of unwitting investors. That house of cards collapsed worldwide a year ago. It would be tragic to let the bankers build a new one. Some reformers think all but the simplest, most visible forms of derivatives should be prohibited by law. The president prefers instead to regulate them. Derivatives, his advisers explained, would be less dangerous if they were traded openly in financial markets, just like stocks and bonds. Regulators could then put the brakes on dangerous excess if they saw it developing. Anyway, that was the theory.

But the "reform" legislation approved by the House Financial Services Committee on October 15 is a fiesta of exemptions, exceptions and twisted legalese that effectively defeat the original purpose. Only experts can divine the actual meaning of the bill's densely worded provisions, and many of them have reacted with disgust. The "entanglements of derivatives exposures" among oversize banks "is the equivalent of the San Andreas Fault of our financial system," veteran financier Robert Johnson testified at an October 7 hearing on the draft bill. If Congress does not disarm derivatives, he warned, it could lead to another cascade of failure that would give regulators no choice but once again to rush to the rescue of the banks dubbed "too big to fail."

That risk is not theoretical. The largest banks that dominate this lucrative business seem to have gotten pretty much what they wanted--a free hand to keep peddling the indecipherable derivatives beyond the reach of regulators. According to the Financial Times, Goldman Sachs plans to market a new financial instrument that will allow banks to reduce the capital required to hold risky assets on their balance sheets. Goldman calls this product "insurance" and expects to sell it to the banks with toxic portfolios, enabling them to shift the risk off their balance sheets. It is not clear whether the new bill will interfere with this "innovation." Goldman evidently does not see a problem.

According to caller.com, and kristv, a 58-year-old South Carolina man who police subdued using a Taser and then performed CPR on died Friday.

The man was removed from life support Friday afternoon by doctors at Christus Spohn Hospital South, said Corpus Christi Police Capt. Todd Green, department spokesman.

Authorities wouldn’t release the man’s name, pending notification of family members. An autopsy will be done by the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine an official cause of death, police said. The autopsy could take days depending upon the medical examiner’s workload Monday morning, according to Ric Ortiz, an assistant to the medical examiner.

Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton all pursued universal coverage, but none could advance such a bill as far as a floor vote in either chamber. "There is still a long way to go, but the House vote really was an historical marker," says political scientist James Morone of Brown University, the co-author of The Heart of Power, a new book analyzing how presidents since FDR have handled health care. "We have had brilliant, successful, charismatic leadership at various times in American history. And no one has gotten as far as this Congress and this president."

If Obama does sign a reform bill, which appears more likely than not, Republicans will face a momentous choice between consolidation and repudiation -- between accepting the new program and seeking to dismantle it. The alternative paths are neatly captured by the GOP's contrasting reactions to the two central cords of America's existing social safety net. After FDR got Social Security approved in 1935, Alf Landon, his Republican challenger in 1936, denounced it as "unjust ... stupidly drafted [and] ... folly." Roosevelt's landslide victory over Landon (and subsequent re-elections) provided Social Security the time to build impregnable support. But many congressional Republicans kept fighting the program until President Eisenhower, a Republican, declared a truce after his election in 1952.

By contrast, Republicans largely accepted Medicare soon after President Johnson signed it into law in 1965. Although conservative Republicans such as Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan had fiercely condemned the program before its creation, Nixon during the 1968 campaign spared Medicare from his criticism of the Great Society's cost. Once elected, he quickly "became a strong supporter of Medicare" and effectively ended challenges to its existence, Morone notes.

Which path might Republicans follow if Obama signs universal health care? Several factors point toward confrontation. The GOP accepted Medicare so quiescently partly because the program began dispensing benefits just one year after passage and rapidly became too popular to assail. Social Security, though, was phased in over many years--as health care reform is slated to be. Such delay can invite "fierce and protracted ... guerrilla war," notes Harvard sociologist Theda Skocpol.

Also encouraging confrontation is the breadth of Republican opposition. Almost all House Republicans at the time voted to derail Medicare and Social Security by "recommitting" the bills to committee. But once those challenges failed, about half of House Republicans backed Medicare on final passage and four-fifths supported Social Security. House Republicans last week voted 176-1 against the health care bill.

Some senior House Republicans have already pledged to repeal any health care bill if they regain the majority. And many GOP challengers in 2010 will surely echo them. But with Obama holding a veto pen, Republicans probably couldn't mount a real threat unless they won the White House in 2012. One top adviser to a possible 2012 GOP presidential contender says that, given the GOP base's hostility to the reform plan and independents' unease, it is likely that "most potential [Republican] candidates will argue for wholesale replacement with their own version of health care reform."

If Obama passes health reform and Republicans then seek its repeal, the next presidential election could lastingly redefine America's social safety net. Like 1936 and 1968, 2012 looms as a crossroads in the relationship between Americans and their government.

Grieving soldiers and families at Fort Hood, Texas, will get a visit from Sarah Palin next month as part of her national book tour, her publisher told Washington Wire.

The former vice presidential candidate, whose book “Going Rogue,” will be released on Tuesday, had already agreed to visit the Army base, according to her publicist. She said that after last week’s shooting that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded, an official on the base contacted HarperCollins to say that Palin should stick with the planned appearance.

The Dec. 4 event had not been announced publicly or included in a preliminary list of tour stops published on Palin’s Facebook page.

This woman can forget about being President. Not saying I ever thought she was capable but her supporters think she can. She is turning into this celebrity. If you start to become this TMZ tabloid type of individual people are going to stop taking you seriously. We all know she quit being governor for the money and I don't begrudge that.
