Speaking of marriage--new study's point to the success of interracial marriages involving black women:
There's a very recent study that was released that puts to ret some of the lies about black women being poor choices for mates. This is from the National Council on Family Relations.
We compared NH Black/ White unions to NH Black/NH Black marriages, which showed a persistently higher risk of divorce than White/White unions.
White husband/NH Black wife couples were 44% less likely to divorce than White/White couples, and White husband/NH Asian wife couples were only 4% more likely to divorce by Year 10.
Compared to White/White couples, White female/Black male, and White female/Asian male marriages were more prone to divorce; meanwhile, those involving non-White females and White males and Hispanics and non-Hispanic persons had similar or lower risks of divorce.
Conversely, White men/ non-White women couples show either very little or no differences in divorce rates; or, as in the case of White men and Black women, are substantially less likely than White/White couples to divorce by their 10th year.

Wednesday, November 04, 2009 GOP Senator Tom Coburn using secret hold to block bill on veterans benefits by Joe Sudbay (DC) on 11/04/2009 07:54:00 PM
We always knew "support the troops" didn't really mean anything to Republicans. It was a slogan, nothing more. And, that's being confirmed by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) who is using the anonymous "hold" procedure in the Senate to prevent action on a bill designed to support veterans. Usually, these "holds" are secret, but the veterans have outed Coburn:
Thirteen major military and veterans groups have joined forces to try to force one senator — Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma — to release a hold that he has placed on a major veterans benefits bill.
Coburn has been identified by Senate aides as the lawmaker preventing consideration of S 1963, the Veterans’ Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009, by using an informal but legal practice of putting a hold on a bill.
Maybe the Democrats should file a cloture motion on S. 1963 to force the GOP caucus to choose between Coburn and the vets.
New Business-Group Ad Has Racial Overtones, Union Alleges
A new ad from the Chamber of Commerce and its allies attacking Democratic-led efforts to pass health care legislation includes a storyline that union critics say is rife with racial undertones.
The spot, titled "Millions," asserts that health reform could "wipe out even more jobs" than those lost so far. But it does so in a peculiar and perhaps controversial way.
The scenario of a distraught boss forced to fire an employee is illustrated by a white worker being summoned to the office as a black co-worker looks on.
Carrie Prejean Sex TapeCarrie Prejean demanded more than a million dollars during her settlement negotiations with Miss California USA Pageant officials -- that is, until the lawyer for the Pageant showed Carrie an XXX home video of her handiwork.
The video the lawyer showed Carrie is extremely graphic and has never been released publicly. We know that, because TMZ obtained the video months ago but decided not to post it because it was so racy. Let's just say, Carrie has a promising solo career.
We're told it took about 15 seconds for Carrie to jettison her demand and essentially walk away with nothing. As we first reported, the Pageant is paying around $100,000 to her lawyers and publicist -- a fraction of her bills. She pockets nothing in the settlement.
Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) chief of staff Michelle Marston, a long-time veteran of Capitol Hill who has guided Bachmann in her much-increased national TV presence this year, has quit her post.
Because Alexander Hamilton has always been my favorite Founding Father; because I am in the "actually writing" mode and otherwise away from the internet; because no one else on the Atlantic's team has yet called attention to this; and because it is a very diverting four-minute interlude, here is Lin-Manuel Miranda's tribute to Hamilton from the "White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word" this past May. In case you have missed it.

Why are Gay people now BLAMING the President for their loss in Maine? PBO doesn't support gay marriage. This is ridiculous. PBO cannot make people approve of gay people. I just watched the racist Dan Savage blame Obama on Keith Olberman. These "gay advocates" were given air time on CNN, FOX and MSNBC to demean and hate on African Americans after prop 8. They are now able to spout their hatred of Barack Obama at will and without a dissnting voice. Republican gay people using gay rights as a way to derail the Presidency of Barack Obama. When is someone going to tell these right wing gay teabaggers enough is enough?
texascowgirl
Well if you can't blame the whole black community (Maine doesn't really have one) blame the black president. It's always the gay hating negroes dontcha know?
Monie
so let's see now....after Prop 8, exactly one year ago, it's passage was the fault of Black folk. Now it is the Black President's fault in a majority white state. It is interesting that some very prominent gay figures want an endorsement of a man who they have trashed, criticized, and washed their hands clean of this past year.
So, they want the support of the person who they have screamed to the high heavens is nonsupportive again and again.....
trose1
What did they want the President to say? I don't agree with gay marriage but I want the people of Maine to approve of something I don't. WTF. Is it me or are these people just NUTS?
You know I was actually halfway kidding when I said on another blog earlier today "Have the GLBT actually learned the lesson they didn't learn from Prop 8 in California, or will they just somehow blame Obama."
These people are pathetic.
caribgirl
I watch the online clips of Olberman's show everyday and I can't recall him focusing on that gay marriage initiative in Maine, especially in the last few weeks. It's interesting how he can get someone on to talk about it after it has failed.
RobM
Savage is a teabagging pile of shit. You can't blame AA's for the voting population in ME is so small as to be neglible. He showed his true colors after Prop 8.

A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE
Let's see:
* A Republican might win by an eyelash in the gubernatorial race in New Jersey -- a state that's had Republican governors for 16 of the past 28 years.
* In Virginia, a Republican will almost certainly win the governor's race -- which means that the Virginia governor will be of the party opposite that of the president who was just elected ... just like the last eight governors of Virginia, each of whom was elected a year after a presidential election and none of whom was of the president's party.
* A Democrat is probably going to lose in New York's 23rd congressional district -- a district that's changed shape over the years, but has mostly not sent a Democrat to Congress since the 19th century.
There's your stinging rebuke to Obama and the Democrats.
edit. Ah the date. Well, the democrat won, and Nancy is saying that win is why 'we won tonight'?
eh, it's all politics and spin. Again, I really believe democrats' act is NOT together. I agree that this isn't a stinging rebuke to Obama. But it does matter who was motivated to turn out, and why. Who is motivated to turn out always does.
The young dark haired white chick on macneil lehrer was saying the two democrat governor candidates ran extremely negative campaigns. Reminds me of here in Albuquerque, where Chavez the very popular incumbant ran an extremely negative personal campaign against Berry 'no more sanctuary city status' the republican. Berry talked about what he was going to do. Chavez talked about Berry. Berry won. When will folks learn not to sling mud? and to focus on the positives, particularly the positives one has brought to an office, or will bring?
but maybe i heard wrong, misunderstood how the races went down.

More message parlors

SSDD:
Newsweek magazine is teaming up with an oil-industry lobbying group to host an invitation-only event on climate-change and energy issues for lawmakers, just as the Senate gets set to take up legislation on the subject.
The panel discussion, entitled “Climate and Energy Policy: Moving?”, will feature Jack Gerard, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, and, as moderator, Newsweek columnist Howard Fineman, according to an email invitation sent by a Newsweek business staffer and obtained by TPMmuckraker.
“Newsweek is pleased to be co-hosting this panel discussion with API,” says the email, which adds that “notable members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate” have been invited. The event is scheduled to be held December 1 in a Senate meeting room.
I read a lot of progressive blogs and there is a growing sentiment that Obama has been a disappointment because he hasn't been as progressive and his policies too moderate. Yet this poll from Gallup shows that a majority (54%) believe his policies to be more liberal than moderate(34%), which is a significant difference from last year, 43% liberal, 45% moderate. http://www.gallup.com/poll/124094/Majority-Say-...
Of interest is this "Among Democrats by ideology, Obama's favorability rating has fallen mostly among moderate Democrats, from 97% to 84%, with a smaller dip among conservative Democrats, 78% to 72%. It has held steady at 97% among liberal Democrats."
So which view is the mirage, and which is the real thing?
texascowgirl
The internet and our own anecdotal experiences cause us to have myopic views of almost everything.
Amaya
That's funny, cuz online progressives didn't want Obama in the first place. Or the second place. Or the third place. I''d like to say don't mind online progressives, because they want Obama to be someone he never campaigned to be....... someone in their own image. But that would be nearsighted of me.
The gallup poll is interesting however. I don't know which is mirage and which is real. I'll take whatever is happening outside of the echo chambers.

i had to turn away from PBS, and macneil and lehrer. (I apologize for the misspelling, and the fact I didn't catch any of these people's names.) the old white dude was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too giddy. i want analysis, not spin. i also don't want the hypocrisy of dissing Obama's use of 'change' while pushing republican party use of 'change'. that dude completely turned me off.
i wanted to hear more about voters' local issues (because as the old adage says, all politics is local), percentage of turn-out, why democrats wouldn't, why republicans would. he didn't give me that. he gave me 'this is a referendum against Obama, Obama can't bring out voters'. Whatever. I wanted to know why independents turned out. He didn't give me that. He gave me an on-air 'I'm about to cum' party wank. Can't stand that when the democrats were doing that. Can't stand it when this dude does it, with eyes so wet and shiny and barely able to sit in his seat. Pass.
the dark haired young white chick gave a little more analysis than spin, and honesty, about what happened with less rah rah than the old white dude. i don't mind a wake up call to democrats. they NEED a wake up call. they deserve one. they've 'earned' one. for real.
but i want honesty in those wakeup calls, too.
ps, what has bloomberg done for NY besides being personally likeable? i don't live out there, but personal likeability is the kind of thing that keeps incumbents in office way past their sale date. his spending of 110 million of his own money also rubs me the wrong way. was that really necessary? but, again, i dont live in NY. what's happening out there locally?
