It is possible…he's isolated from his family. His parents are dead. His religion frowns on casual association with women. He hangs out in strip clubs, and gets himself wound up.. He's probably under psychological pressure from radicals he's associated with. He's faced with deployment..and the possibility he might not survive it. He's faced with the thought that when he's deployed, there'll be no one left back home to anchor him, or even care if he lives or dies. He's anxious about his professional performance..and there is conflict between the science of psychiatry, and the superstitious teachings of Islam.

It is entirely possible that his religious ravings were a sublimation of his anxieties – sexual and professional – into a violent act. Maybe this man was just scared to be deployed..
