IMO, we are kidding ourselves if this war is a matter of winning vs. losing. The situation is much more complex. If "winning the war" were the goals we could have left Iraq and Afghanistan long ago. Saddam is dead and the Taliban are ousted from power in Afghanistan. We won, time to go home. So I cringe when I see him use the term "unwinnable war". Most of our goals there now are about rebuilding countries and some level of security is needed to be able to do that.

Still I also think Wills has underestimated Obama. I remember Obama who turned the decades long conventional wisdom on its head by saying he would meet with leaders of Iran, etc. Obama has embraced veterans and veteran causes more than any president I can think of. He criticized the invasion of Iraq but he has walked the walk with regard to how we treat the young men and women in the armed forces. Obama would know how to fight the phony charges about being weak or unpatriotic.

I don't think Obama goes down without a fight. And despite all the grousing from some "progressives" he is still going to have plenty of people in his corner in 2012.

I'm disappointed in Wills here even though his historical comparison is quite interesting. I agree the impacts in the US will hit communities of color particularly hard. And it's not just hurricanes. How about intense heat waves (>105), drought, floods? It will be even worse in developing countries, but we are messing up the climate for future generations of Ameriicans too.

Very important post and topic. I think that may be true. The charges from various quarters would be toxic—that he was weak, unpatriotic, sacrificing the sacrifices that have been made, betraying our dead, throwing away all former investments in lives and treasure. All that would indeed be brought against him, and he could have little defense in the quarters where such charges would originate.

http://blogs.nybooks.com/post/231779435/one-ter...

One-Term President?
Garry Wills
I am told by people I respect that Barack Obama cannot pull out of both Iraq and Afghanistan without becoming a one-term president.
