A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
Cuz he rolls all multicultural like that. Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights – it’s a big deal holiday for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. And yes, folks, there are lots of Americans who worship these faiths. My college roommate, Sandhya, was Hindu. As is one of my former staffers, Naveen, who just took a job at a major governmental agency.
I find the whole tolerance thing and celebration of Americans from all walks of life at the White House to be kinda inspiring and what not. How bout you? I loved hearing about the Fiesta Latina at the White House earlier this week to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the Spanish Prime Minister’s visit. Are you digging the welcome wagon or will you be snapping your neck in church and praying over Obama’s heathen soul this weekend?
Bottom line: it’s clear that a brother would like to be re-elected and is making sure demographics that turned out for him big time feel the big love. Didn’t get much news coverage given the whole balloon boy fiasco, which is too bad.
From the White House blog, here’s Obama’s special message to those celebrating Diwali and making some very special Black American History this week.
On October 14th, President Obama observed the auspicious holiday of Diwali, or festival of lights, in the East Room of the White House. The occasion marked the first time that an American President has observed the holiday. Sri Narayanachar Digalakote, a Sanskrit scholar and ordained Hindu priest of the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Lantham, Maryland chanted Asatoma Sadgamaya from the Upanishads while the President lit the White House diya.
Happy Diwali!
