{background music: Beyonce's "Single Ladies"} Soledad O'Brien investigates to find out why up to 99% of black women never marry, and tells the poignant tale of how her own Afro-Cuban mother chose to marry outside of her race. O'Brien then investigates the lack of eligible black men {insert pictures of thugs and rappers here}, and interviews 5 black women, all of whom have chosen to date white men or stay celibate forever.


PART 2, "It don't matter if you're black or white"

(back ground music: MJ's "Black or White") Soledad O'Brien examines the growing trend in interracial marriages, {graphic of Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian}. O'Brien also interviews 5 black men who have decided to take non-black wives and their reasons for doing so.

PART 3, "Damn, Damn, Damn!"

{background music: Rihanna's "Take a bow"} Soledad O'Brien investigates the prevalence of domestic violence in the black community {graphic of Chris Brown & Rihanna} and whether the rise of out of wedlock births is condemning a whole generation to never know what marriage is.

PART 4, "Jumpin' the Broom"

{background music: Alicia Keys "Unbreakable"} Soledad O'Brien investigates blacks who are getting married and what makes their marriages work. O'Brien also spotlights celebrity marriages such as Will & Jada Smith, Beyonce & Jay-Z and the most famous black married couple, Barack & Michelle Obama. O'Brien also investigates whether high-profile black marriages are setting impossible standards for black women in their quest to find mates.

Here is Howard Kurtz of the WAPO on the Obama's marriage.

He raises a good point about the Obama's marriage; they admit to bumps in it. That humanizes them to people more than anything else.

Interesting NYT article. (I will probably get it in hard copy just for the stunning photography.) Yesterday I responded to the idea that this might result in the media spotlight being put on "Black marriages." I am not against this, necessarily, but I will not like it if this coverage paints those of us who are part of a Black couple (especially "professional" Black couple) as this exotic species riddled with problems and angst....

I wouldn't sweat it. For those Black folks who are married, their marriages are no worse or different than anybody else's.

I agree a spotlight on "black" marriage not good. A spotlight on marriage, fantastic! Don't we -USA- have a 50% divorce rate? No room for pointing fingers here. Their marriage is a wonderful model for everyone not just 'we as a peoples'.
