Interesting NYT article. (I will probably get it in hard copy just for the stunning photography.) Yesterday I responded to the idea that this might result in the media spotlight being put on “Black marriages.” I am not against this, necessarily, but I will not like it if this coverage paints those of us who are part of a Black couple (especially “professional” Black couple) as this exotic species riddled with problems and angst….

I agree a spotlight on “black” marriage not good. A spotlight on marriage, fantastic! Don't we -USA- have a 50% divorce rate? No room for pointing fingers here. Their marriage is a wonderful model for everyone not just 'we as a peoples'.

{background music: Rihanna's “Take a bow”} Soledad O'Brien investigates the prevalence of domestic violence in the black community {graphic of Chris Brown & Rihanna} and whether the rise of out of wedlock births is condemning a whole generation to never know what marriage is.

PART 4, “Jumpin' the Broom”

{background music: Alicia Keys “Unbreakable”} Soledad O'Brien investigates blacks who are getting married and what makes their marriages work. O'Brien also spotlights celebrity marriages such as Will & Jada Smith, Beyonce & Jay-Z and the most famous black married couple, Barack & Michelle Obama. O'Brien also investigates whether high-profile black marriages are setting impossible standards for black women in their quest to find mates.
