Civil Rights Group Teams With Wells Fargo Despite Charges of Predatory Lending
By Alain Sherter | Oct 28, 2009
The National Urban League, founded nearly a century ago, is one of the country’s most respected civil rights organizations. Which is why its choice of participants at the group’s annual “equal opportunity day” awards banquet next month in New York is puzzling in the extreme.
The organizer of, and a speaker at, the dinner is Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf. Wells, you may recall, faces lawsuits from the state of Illinois and the city of Baltimore for allegedly discriminating against African-Americans and Latinos in their lending practices. The NAACP also has filed suit against the company, along with HSBC, charging Wells with “systematic, institutionalized racism in subprime home mortgage lending.”
Specifically, Wells is accused of steering minorities into pricier subprime mortgages. A 2008 investigation by the Chicago Reporter found that Wells Fargo in 2005 issued African-American borrowers higher-cost mortgages 37 percent of the time, compared with about 5 percent for white borrowers. Among its other findings was that black homeowners earning more than $100,000 a year were more likely to get high-cost loans than white homeowners earning less than $35,000.
“As a result of its discriminatory and illegal mortgage lending practices, Wells Fargo transformed our cities’ predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods into ground zero for subprime lending,” said Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan in a statement in filing suit against Wells in July. “The dreams of many hardworking families have ended in foreclosure due to Wells Fargo’s illegal and unfair conduct.”
Read the time article on the first marriage, got to say as people, them Obamas are some nice people and hope God continues to give them strength to make it. I agree that struggle makes the relationship sweet if you invest time and love in it. MY favorite part was that the first grandma does the laundry, she refuses to let the staff do laundry..... LOVE IT OLD SCHOOL
itgurl_29
You know granny is old school! We don't believe in laundry service, where people are touching all over your dirty drawers and knowing all your personal business!
I was reading this article and I realised that one of the groups that has benefited the most during the 10 months of the Obama administration is the military. There was money in the stimulus package for helping military families, they're getting a pay increase, the VA is getting a timely budget, and they have a revised GI bill. Michelle is also doing a lot of PR raising awareness on the struggles of military families and appealing to the broad public to do more to assist them by volunteering and leading the way by volunteering herself. Maybe its because the Obamas can't sneeze without it making the news, military families, veterans and active members are getting more attention which I think is very good considering that the country has been at war for 8 yrs in 2 battlefields.
I'm sure Laura Bush did lots for military families but it never seemed to get much publicity. Publicity is important because the percentage of Americans who have some direct connection to the wars is very small. So there must be an outreach to the broader public beyond that to remind them of the sacrifices that these men and women and their families have made and continue to make. I like that Michelle is making that appeal.

will they get the credit...I dunno.
i said earlier this week how it kills to see the GOP wrap themselves in the flag, and then vote REPEATEDLY AGAINST THE AVERAGE SERVICEMAN AND WOMAN.
they do it all the time and get away with it - disgusting.
cool! I sent this article on to the folks who are developing the curriculum for our green power training program because we have been focusing only on lithium-ion battery technologies.

Is Shepard Smith rich? He just busted Fox for not interviewing Corzine. He said,"“I didn’t know that was about to happen,” Smith then said. “My apologies for the lack of balance there. If I had control, it wouldn’t have happened.”" http://www.fancast.com/blogs/tv-news/foxs-shepa...

I think he is just doing his job. I don't think Fox will fire him because that would snuff the last credibility they have. Everyone knows Shep is the real deal. Fox gets a lot of negative mail for having Shep there because he doesn't tow the line. Shep has high ratings and he is comfortable in his spot. Fox knows if they fire him they are going to have to pay him a shitload of money and also he will get another gig and they will pay him a shitload of money. He is their only cover for "Fair and Balanced" anyway.

I think he's trying to get fired and already has his lawyer on speeddial for his wrongful termination suit.

This is what a bank run looks like. WaMu goes down under the bum rush, quietly.

Gang rape in Richmond, CA. No one snitched, no one stopped. This is learned behavior you can't blame on poverty and the whitefolks
I don't know the race of the female or the perpetrators. The two guys I saw were Hispanic. Not that it matters. Kids are so desensitized to violence. With Men there was an unwritten rule that boys and men USED TO follow. PROTECT WOMEN AT ALL COSTS. No one ever had to tell me that you protect girls. I'm not even going to rant about this because it's just too depressing. And unfortunately, things like this happen a lot more than we like to admit and it goes unreported. And I know someone is going to say, "Well, women lie." Yes, they do and it's wrong but A LOT of women are getting raped and no one is saying a word. I'm not a religious man but sometimes I feel human beings don't even deserve the privilege of life.

my chest tightened when I first read that story. that girl's life is over. you can give her therapy until Jesus comes back, and she'll be a mess.

This is what happens when you are exposed as frauds. People stop watching. CNBC is losing eyeballs.

Besides fraud, who has money left to gamble in a fixed game?

Thank you. Looks like I won't be getting that CNBC app after all.

Never used much curry, guess I'll have to take it up a few notches.

Some of you have mentioned this case before but Larry Langford, Bham AL Mayor, guilty on all bribery charges (60) in deliberations that last less than 2 hours. He's facing 805 years in prison.
He then gives a press conference where he and his wife act a complete a$#.
morphus
Langford was one of several 'officials' who were just tools. When will those seeking 'justice' go up the predator food chain to the Wall Street banking behemoths?
""Cute's good. But cute only lasts for so long," Obama tells fellow powerbroker Katie Couric in December's "Women of the Year" issue of Glamour magazine. "Then it's 'Who are you as a person?' Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul ... When you're dating a man, you should always feel good."

This is big. The state of Maine said you can't hide your donors in a political campaign. I have never been one for hiding what you think. The fact the Maine court has done this is likely to lead to Federal Court. With the issue of whom is the person in a corporation, the powerful and the hateful will be exposed to the light of public opinion. Fox, GE, GS, C GM, PECO, the Sterlings-owner of the Clippers, the Mormons, the Roman Catholic church, liberals, conservatives and everybody else will have to put their cards on the tables for everyone to see. Bad behavior will disappear if you provide a service to the public.

I answered your questions under the Valerie Jarrett post
RobM
Thank you. Does Ann Dibble have a sister named Susan?
rikyrah
I don't know, but let's just say, the Dibbles are a certain ' type', if you know what I mean. Find a pic of Ann Jordan, and compare.
Alexander2
If you have something to say about Valerie Jarrett, why don't you just say it?
rikyrah
RobM asked about Ann Jordan
Alexander2
Saw your response under the Valerie Jarrett thread. Not trying to start a ruckus. You and RobM are just exploring the family tree. No problem with that.

I think this is a good thing.
