"First Lady to visit Eglin, talk to families, base leaders
As a physician, Virgil Brown would like nothing better than to spend a few minutes talking health care with first lady Michelle Obama.
Back when they were in the fourth grade together, he just wanted to answer a question before she did.
“I was accustomed to being the smartest kid in the class,” Brown said. “But in fourth grade there was this group of two or three girls that started getting the answers before I did.”
“It was quite irritating,” he added, laughing.
Brown and Obama, then Michelle Robinson, attended Bryn Mawr Elementary School in the South Shore community of Chicago.
She was one of the smart girls he remembers and still can point her out of a class photo.
Brown moved to California the next year and eventually arrived at White-Wilson Medical Center in Fort Walton Beach. Robinson become a lawyer and later married President Barack Obama.
She’s visiting Eglin Air Force Base Thursday amid quite a bit of fanfare"

alcon Crest - Does a European Release Mean North America Will Get DVDs? Here's What Warner Tells Us...
No current Knots Landing plans at Warner...but what about Falcon Crest? Posted by David Lambert 10/14/2009
In the wake of news a week ago about Dallas - The Complete 12th Season, fans of other primetime soap operas from the Lorimar library have been intense in asking us about Warner Home Video's plans for DVD releases of shows such as Knots Landing and Falcon Crest. Our readers who want the latter show, starring Oscar-winning actress Jane Wyman, are quick to point out that this past May saw a European release of the first season.
Warner ("WHV") hadn't given us any hints about either show's DVD chances in the United States for a while now, and the most recent public word was a bit over a year ago, during a Sept. 2008 online chat held between the HomeTheaterForum.com ("HTF") and WHV. In that 2008 chat, they revealed that 2009 would see a long-awaited release for the second season of Knots Landing (which did come out this past April). In the chat, they also said "we're interested in how Knots Landing sells as an indication of potential support for Falcon Crest". Like we said, though, all of that was a year ago.
There hasn't been a 2009 "TV and Animation-themed" chat between the HTF and WHV yet, and Ron Epstein of the HTF tells me that, since the HTF's recent site redesign, they're working to get a compatible chat client in place so they can begin scheduling chats again. They hope to have it in place soon, and would love to do a new chat with Warner (assuming the studio is open to it, of course). Nothing is firm right now, though (we appreciate Ron giving us that information).
So, with that in mind, we went directly to the source, Warner, to get the latest on both Knots Landing and Falcon Crest. This afternoon, we got our answer...and it turns out to be a mixed bag. The outlook isn't so good at the moment for fans of Abby, Gary, Valene and the rest: WHV simply tells us "No plans on Knots Landing". But fans of Falcon Crest can jump for joy, because Warner Home Video had something to tell us, that honestly we weren't expecting:
We are planning to release Falcon Crest in 2010.
Wow. This makes it a great day for Earl Hamner Jr. fans, since Hamner created this show as well as The Waltons (which got a new DVD release - its final one, in fact - announced today). It's all a great day for fans of Lorenzo Lamas, who not only co-starred with Wyman in every episode of Falcon Crest, but who afterward appeared at the title character in the cult classic TV series Renegade. Only 3 of that show's 5 seasons were released on DVD, years ago, but a new announcement today shows that another studio has bought the rights, and intends to finish Renegade on DVD.
Lots of terrific news to share with our readers, but we know that the Falcon Crest info - no matter how welcome - is still just a tease. We don't have a specific release date for you yet, nor content details or package art, because Warner hasn't finalized any of that so far. When the studio wraps that up and puts a cork in it, then we'll bring the info to you as soon as we can. Stay tuned!

"I was not as sold on the Republican party as I was on the governor," Robinson wrote of Rockefeller. "Every chance I got, while I was campaigning, I said plainly what I thought of the right-wing Republicans and the harm they were doing. I felt the GOP was a minority party in term of numbers of registered voters and could not win unless they updated their social philosophy and sponsored candidates and principles to attract the young, the black, and the independent voter. I said this often from public, and frequently Republican, platforms. By and large Republicans had ignored blacks and sometimes handpicked a few servile leaders in the black community to be their token "niggers." How would I sound trying to go all out to sell Republicans to black people? They're not buying. They know better."
"I admit freely that I think, live, and breathe black first and foremost. That is one of the reasons I was so committed to the governor and so opposed to Senator Barry Goldwater. Early in 1964 I wrote a Speaking Out piece for The Saturday Evening Post. A Barry Goldwater victory would insure that the GOP would be completely the white man's party. What happened at San Francisco when Senator Goldwater became the Republican standard-bearer confirmed my prediction."

First non-black Miss Hampton U says sorry Apologizes for saying people disapproved her win because of her skin color updated 5:47 p.m. CT, Wed., Oct . 14, 2009
HAMPTON, Va. - The first non-black winner of the annual beauty pageant at historically black Hampton University says she's sorry for writing a letter to President Barack Obama contending her crowning was not “widely accepted” on campus because she is not black.
Nikole Churchill, 22, a senior nursing major from Hawaii who attends the Virginia Beach campus, won the 15th annual Miss Hampton U scholarship pageant on Friday. She beat out nine black students.
Two days after her crowning, she wrote a letter to Obama, describing the crowning as “the best night of my life.”
But she added: “With that being said, I am sad to say that my crowning was not widely accepted and many negative comments regarding my win have been shared throughout my campus.
"It would be much easier to say that possibly some were not accepting of the news because I wasn't the most qualified contestant; however, the true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African American. “
She appealed to the president, who is black and was born in Hawaii, to come to Hampton University “so that my fellow Hamptonians can stop focusing so much on the color of my skin and doubting my abilities to represent, but rather be proud of the changes our nation is making towards accepting diversity.”
Her letter was posted on Congress.org, a news and information Web site devoted to encouraging civic participation, and triggered a debate on campus.
Campus split Journalism sophomore Juan Diasgranados told the Daily Press that students were split on Churchill's crowning, with some saying her win embodies HU's spirit of diversity and others complaining that she's not black and doesn't attend the main campus.
"They're saying that people don't know who she is, people don't even see her, so how can she represent us if she's not even from the main campus?" Diasgranados told the newspaper.
On Tuesday, Churchill, who said her father is from Guam and her mother is Italian, issued a statement through the university apologizing for the wording of her letter to Obama.
“I have now come to regret writing this letter and disappointing the very students that I now represent. I took the comments of a few and blew it out of proportion,” she said.
“I truly apologize to all students, faculty, staff and alumni. It was absolutely not my intention to bring negative attention to the University. I deeply apologize for any misunderstandings that this may have caused and I look forward to working with my fellow students to promote the Hampton University legacy.”
She is SORRY; annnnnnnnnnd an EPIC FAIL in the "JUDGMENT CATEGORY!" :>)

I wish there was an emoticon I could type that would mimic the look on my face after reading her "apology".

"Limbaugh doesn’t get it: Idiots damage NFL product
Dave Checketts understood. He heads the group seeking to purchase the Rams, and he knew the other owners never would approve of the sale. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t want him in the league. The NFL Players Association didn’t want him in the league — and there’s a new Collective Bargaining Agreement to be negotiated.
Limbaugh is out. He knows why. He just can’t admit the truth.
His reaction: “This is not about the NFL, it’s not about the St. Louis Rams, it’s not about me. This is about the ongoing effort by the left in this country, wherever you find them, in the media, the Democrat Party, or wherever, to destroy conservatism, to prevent the mainstreaming of anyone who is prominent as a conservative. … Therefore, this is about the future of the United States of America and what kind of country we’re going to have.”
So the U.S. is going to hell because the NFL doesn’t want Rush Limbaugh as an owner?

Chris Matthews talked about this earlier, but, it is hilarious the teabaggers are attacking their own......after Lindsey Graham today because he is "too moderate." I hope they continue to fracture...
""I'm not going to leave the Republican Party," Graham said when one questioned asked him why he hasn't yet joined the Democrats. "I'm going to grow it. We're not going to be the party of angry white guys."
His comments were met with a salvo of boos and shouts of "Ron Paul!"
"I love this party," he responded. "I'm not going to be let it be hijacked by Ron Paul."
Graham emphasized his conservative bona fides-- particularly his record of opposing abortion rights and support of gun rights-- but said GOP needs to build a broader coalition. Otherwise, he warned, those trying to purify the party will turn Congress over "to the most liberal people in the world because somebody disagrees with you."
"I'm going to find people in Maine, Delaware, Illinois and other places that can win," he said. "And I'm going to help them, and we're going to move this party and this country forward. If you don't like it, you can leave."

Getting to 'Yes' With Olympia Snowe By E.J. Dionne Jr. Thursday, October 15, 2009
Now two people will have to choose. The fate of the health-care bill is largely in the hands of President Obama and Sen. Olympia Snowe
The Senate Finance Committee's vote on Tuesday to send its bill to the floor vindicated President Obama's strategy of giving Congress wide latitude to write the early drafts. Major health reform has advanced farther than ever before.
But Obama must now abandon his preference for intervening forcefully only after House and Senate bills go to a conference committee. Instead he needs to focus on the core goals of insuring as many people as possible and expanding, rather than contracting, the choices Americans will have under a new system.
However policy experts judge the final product, reform will be sustainable only if beleaguered citizens feel more secure, not less, and more confident than they are now that health insurance will be priced within their reach. Obama has said he will own this thing in the end. He's right, and he has to make clear what kind of system he wants to buy.
So does Maine's Olympia Snowe. Against much conventional thinking, she realized that being the only Republican senator to vote for the bill would greatly enhance her ability to shape the outcome. Now that Democrats have gotten their lone Republican vote, they don't want to lose her -- in part because Snowe's support will give cover to the more reluctant moderate and conservative Senate Democrats who must vote "yes" if a bill is to get through.
In regards to Snowe, I heard she has a 70% approval rating in her district and she has the freedom to go any way she wants without any serious repercussions.. if so, that means whatever she does isn't because of voting pressure it is simply her "personal" views.

RobM,
did you see the opening segment on The Ed Show about the WH, Small business and unemployment
RobM
Yes I saw it. At first it was WTF. Then I realized after he said, 'after President obama passes healthcare this is the second thing he has to do', he is attempting to warn everybody what the next line of Republican attack is going to be, Where are the jobs?. The jobs issue came up on CNBC. I am starting to think that NBC is trying to not only cross utilize their resources but are sychronizing them as well.
Ed's point about the economic team is on point. I am very afraid that one of the calculations in the stimulus package was for the money to be spent starting next year so maximum effect is right before the election. People whom have jobs tend to acknowledge the President as the creator of them. If you read any of the material on the bank stress test you know that the adminstrations assumptions have already been met. The jobless numbers are probably higher than their assumptions as well.
The one suggestion that Ed and the two women made where I completely agree is doing something w/ the tax laws. I would like to go after the entire tax code. I would replace the code w/ a flat tax on wages, capital, interest and any other source of income. It would be a real challenge to the Republican, cripple lobbyists and force Congress to deal w/ real problems.
Alexander2
I saw it and thought he said that this is something the President and the administration is not focused on and that they must focus on it NOW, REALLY RIGHT NOW. He gave no evidence that the administration is not focused on it, and ignored evidence to the contrary. You might be right, I might be wrong.
I understood the bashing of Summers and Geither, but I didn't understand the bashing of Christine Roehmer. She is the one in a struggle with Summers and Geithner, along with the Goolsbee and Jared (I can't remember his last name). She's the one that advocated a bigger economic stimulus. Summers did not present her proposal to the President.
Economics is complicated. It is not something that cable news does very well, on the left or the right. I felt like I was watching a big fat white man stirring up populist rage against the adminstration on the economy. He was screaming into the camera, red in the face. I had to turn it off. I suppose the left needs a Rush Limbaugh, but he didn't give us much to work with.
It was unintelligent and uninformed, in my humble view.
RobM
I would acknowledge ED gets passionate but as in this video he usually makes his case "The left needs a Rush Limbaugh" ROTFLOLF concept but we don't.
rikyrah
the comments on his economic team are on point and what we said about him having a lack of diversity of viewpoints, and having people with their fingerprints on our economic disaster.
Myth
I think that Ed was on point. The discussion of jobs is well worth a days discussion here at JJP because jobs are as important if not more important to many people than healthcare is. Health care is important but a job means survival. Obama is relying heavily on an economic team that apparently has no real life experience in wondering if they can meet payroll, says Ed and it appears as such.
Everyone can see at this point that the Stimulus package has not done much to create needed jobs and I don't believe many people have the faith that the stimulus funds will. Government in my town are talking stimulus money going for such things as architectural design for bridges and very technical "stuff" that the average Joe-the-laborer will never qualify to work in. I just don't see the Stimulus money translating into workable solutions for the numbers of jobs that are needed. But what do I know. Yup Ed, A broader jobs program has to be the key to solving this dilemma. I also don't necessarily agree that small businesses are the key to an increase in jobs for many out of work AAs. I have never thought that a whole lot of "small businesses" were major employers of anything other than family and friends. AAs are the owners of some small businesses but many are limited in scope and capacity to hire large numbers of AAs. You find more discrimination in small business job creation than anywhere else and if federal funds are provided, there is no way it can be monitored to ensure that small businesses are fair. Government funded jobs of a greater magnitude in quasi-governmental agencies would do more good than this "shovel ready" stimulus package is going to create would be a better alternative. Or even a beefed up War on Poverty type of job creation program would put people to work faster. Again, I do think it's past time for giving the job creation situation its due diligence in the blog.
Alexander2
I don't think its a matter of a lack of diversity of viewpoints. The economics team has a diversity of viewpoints. The problem is that certain viewpoints are privileged over others.
Alexander2
You obviously did. Why don't you tell us what you thought about Ed's opening rant? You have an MBA and strong opinions about every issue.
RobM
What is your opinion? I can wait while you watch the video here.
Alexander2
I replied above.

SC board pardons 2 black men executed 94 years ago By SEANNA ADCOX
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina pardoned syndicated radio host Tom Joyner's great-uncles Thursday, nearly a century after they were sent to the electric chair for the 1913 murder of a Confederate Army veteran. Officials believe the two men are the first in the state to be posthumously pardoned in a capital murder case.
Black landowners Thomas and Meeks Griffin were executed 94 years ago after a jury convicted them of killing 73-year-old John Lewis, a wealthy white veteran living in Blackstock, a Chester County town 40 miles north of Columbia. Two other black men were also put to death for the crime.
"This won't bring them back, but this will bring closure. I hope now that they rest in peace," Joyner said. "This is a good day."
Joyner, who lives in Dallas, and his attorney made a presentation to the state parole and pardon board on Wednesday, then left the room while the board voted. Family members who flew in for the hearing included his wife and sons, of Dallas, and brother and his family, from Jackson, Miss.
So it seems Rush isn't gonna be an NFL owner after all.
Y'all know he's gonna go ape isht on his show tomorrow, right?
And Project 21 calls dropping him "an effort to 'Get Whitie'." Y'all will do that better justice than I possibly can to a statement like that, so have at.

I don't understand some of these black conservatives. If you are a black person and you believe that conservatism and Republicism is the best political philosophy I don't begrudge that. But don't be fucking tool. Excuse my language. I vote Democrat by default but I'm not going to dismiss tokenism or racism because it comes from a Democrat. I don't understand how black conservatives constantly feel like they have to defend bigotry. There are things about conservatism that are attractive but I couldn't ever join one of these "black groups" because I'm not interested in being a tool for a political party.
Who cares other than the racist, illiterate and white welfare king and queens who listen to him.I hope he goes crazy and demand your party stand up for his rights. Now I will get my popcorn ready for that.
Reading a transcript just might not do it justice. LOL

Jackson & Sharpton Effort Against Rush Limbaugh is an Effort to "Get Whitie" and a "Racist Act," Says Leading Black Conservative
Statement of Project 21's Deneen Borelli
Washington D.C.: This statement was issued today by Deneen Borelli of the national black leadership network Project 21:
"The left-wing jihad against Rush Limbaugh is un-fair and un-American. Rush is being targeted simply because he is a conservative and a leading critic of President Obama's wealth redistribution policies.
With conservative blood in the water, it's predictable to see the 'race card duo' – Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton – circling the victim. Since the election of the first black president, they have been searching for some white meat to feed on and Rush just happens to be a juicy target. Whipping up unjustified black anger is their specialty.
Frankly, I see their effort as 'get whitie' – an inherent racist act.
It's outrageous that the 'race card duo' are worried about Rush buying a football team following a graphic example of black on black gang violence in Chicago – Jackson's home town. As so-called black leaders they should be putting their time and effort in dealing with the human tragedies in the urban community: crime and failing schools and not a conservative exercising his right to play in the free market."
Project 21, a leading voice of black conservatives since 1992, is sponsored by the National Center for Public Policy Research.
...and I like Deneen (and, in full disclosure, signed up to join P21 about a year ago), but.... "get Whitie?"

Her article went from a section to the headliner, a clear sign that they have nothing else to talk about. And no matter how many times you read it it will not make sense lol that's not the point. The point is to get hits and get attention. That post that Jack put up yesterday about the people on the left, progressives acting like crybabies was partly aimed at her ilk. A.H likes to make a big scene and be doom and gloom when she and her people don't get what they want from the Obama admin. This is an example.
