Oct 12 2009, 12:35 pm by Mike Konczal Student Loans are the New Indentured Servitude
The Wall Street Journal ran a post over the weekend about a new credit crunch among low income borrowers, noting it is now 'payback time.' What they didn't go into is that their primary interviewee is drowning not on expensive cars loans but student loans. This former student's debt is far from extraordinary. It is, in fact, tragically ordinary, as student loans have become the 21st century version of indentured servitude.
From The Wall Street Journal, The 'Democratization of Credit' Is Over -- Now It's Payback Time. Check out the lead:
NEW YORK -- Karen King owes nearly $36,000, more than she's ever earned in a year.
All day long, bill collectors call. She hunts for a second job, sometimes skips meals, and stays with other family members at a grandfather's crowded apartment, trying to get out of debt and turn her life around.
She largely holds herself at fault. "Years ago, I lived for now. It was so stupid," the 28-year-old says. "It's depressing, but I can't live that life anymore." Now, she says, "I basically want to live for the future."
Now go about halfway through.
Her biggest chunk of debt, $26,000, stems from student loans to pay for her two-year associate's degree from a community college -- loans now in the hands of collectors. The remaining $10,000 or so includes old credit-card balances, debt to a store that rents furniture, utility bills and back taxes. Another obligation is $400 a month she contributes to the rent on her grandfather's two-bedroom apartment, where her mother, uncle and sister also live.
Rolfe Winkler caught this too. In addition to pointing out how the current recession is focused in large part on men, it's also worthwhile to note that the current recession is devastating the young. Here's BusinessWeek on "The Lost Generation."
But let's go back to the person in question here: How should we judge this young person profiled in the Wall Street Journal? Is going into a large debt load to pay for college the post-Risk-Shift American Dream? Or is it a form of Living For Now, and being irresponsible and short-sited? According to FinAid.org, the average cumulative debt among graduating seniors is about $22,500. She's ahead of that ($26K/2 years), but what is an acceptable amount of debt to carry to educate yourself? As as Krugman notes, education is a key to our country's successes. Why should we think of her as irresponsible, instead of someone rationally going into debt peonage, like a 17th century indentured servant, in order to take a small shot at bettering oneself - the new middle class dream?
The New Indentured Servitude
Jeffrey Williams, in Dissent Magazine, wrote Student Debt and The Spirit of Indenture, provocatively referred to student loans as the new form of indentured servitude.
Why is this the new form of indentured servitude? Williams gives some reasons: The prevalence of this debt, especially among the young and the poor/working classes, the transformation from a rounding error amount to a significant burden amount over the past 30 years, the length of term, the idea of mobility and "transport" to a job, debt secured not by property but by personhood, and limited legal recourse. All these characteristics are similar. The limited legal recourse is noteworthy here, since unlike most debt, it isn't dischargeable under bankruptcy, thus it doesn't have a natural protection for the consumer receiving credit (a protection, the original synthetic put option, that our Founders were aware of enough to make sure it was provisioned for in the Constitution).
This is not to soft-peddle indentured servitude. Indentured servitude was a violent contract, with physical torture used to coerce labor. As economist DW Galenson noted, "The Company clearly felt that [beaten workers running away] threatened the continued survival of their enterprise, for they reacted forcefully to this crime. In 1612, the colony's governor dealt firmly with some recaptured laborers: 'Some he apointed to be hanged. Some burned. Some to be broken upon wheles, others to be staked and some to be shott to death.'" But let's put on our Galenson Economic Historian googles and think of it as an economic efficiency problem. Indentured servitude, like student loans, are a form of consumption smoothing. And one thing that is needed for consumptions smoothing is good information about the future.
This has been going on since before I was in college.

She spent $26,000 in two years at community college? On what?
pjamma
I was just going to ask that. She could have gone to 4 years at a state school for less $26,000.
CSU is about $4,300 per year or $17,200 for 4 years. An associate degree in CA is about $13,000.
I think she is a bad example.
lamh32
Okay, the ending was kinda anti-climatic, but still was a good one.

I don't know how VH1 does it but they have managed to engross me in the story of people I really don't normally like. Right now it's Behind the Music: Lil Wayne.
And, of course, I going to watch Behind the Music: 50 Cent.
They really have the formula of making the most questionable people look sympathetic down.
vulcan_girl
I watched the Lil Wayne one, Pink and Bobby Brown.
Wayne got me with the story about the cop who saved him when he shot himself, and he's still rolling with Lil Wayne!
I just love Pink and think she's underrated as an artist.
Bobby just took me back to my childhood, then ruined it when he talked about NE smoking weed in hotels and sex with the groupies. To quote Chris Rock "I didn't know til you told me!"
pjamma
Wayne got me with the story about the cop who saved him when he shot himself, and he's still rolling with Lil Wayne!
Thank you! I was wondering who the older white guy was in that picture of his father figures and other family.
Pink is one of my absolute favorites. I haven't scene her Behind the Music. I'll have to find it because I love her.
lamh32
VH1 is like the Lifetime of music televison.
Lifetime pulls you in with a story about some woman (usually white) who has to go on food stamps cause her husband left her for his secretary and she didn't learn no skills and she gotta swallow her pride and take that gov'mt assisstance.
VH1 pulls me in with the pop culture shows: I Love the 60/70/80/90, I Love Toys, etc, and there 100 Greatest...Hip Hop/Dance/Soul/Rock/Pop/One Hit Wonders....etc, and there Fabulous Life of...series.

Unarmed 15-year-old African American killed by police in broad daylight in Champaign, IL. by eco Share this on Twitter - Unarmed 15-year-old African American killed by police in broad daylight in Champaign, IL. Tue Oct 13, 2009 at 05:42:59 PM PDT I write in sorrow from a community in shock. On Friday afternoon in Champaign IL, Kiwane Carrington, an unarmed 15-year-old African American was shot to death in an incident with police. The police had been called to a suspected break-in. Media reports state that the policeman's gun "went off" during a scuffle after Kiwane and his friend disobeyed police orders. Kiwane was known to the house owner and was welcome there. The incidents leading up to the gun being fired are unclear, and family, friends and community members are demanding answers.
eco's diary :: :: The local newspaper, the News Gazette, has more background on Kiwane Carrington and Debra Thomas, the owner of the house where Kiwane was shot, and is also reporting now that the police officer who fired the shot has been named. On Monday (10/12) a press conference was held involving relatives of Kiwane, the owner of the house where the shooting took place, and a community activist.
For those who are unaware, Champaign-Urbana is the location of the flagship campus of the University of Illinois. While the campus community is highly diverse, with all ethnicities well represented and a huge international student body, it would be incorrect to presume that the campus community is well integrated. Racial tensions on campus have become particularly apparent in the last couple of years, with Greek houses gaining notoriety for hosting parties such as "Mexican night" where girls dressed up not in sombreros but as pregnant cleaners. The school mascot, Chief Illiniwek, was recently banned from appearing at NCAA events, and a post-Chief art installation has repeatedly been vandalized.
It is a little unfair to equate the university exactly with Champaign-Urbana. Campus functions somewhat as a separate town, and has its own police force. Students are obviously temporary residents here, and bring with them the culture and suppositions from their own home towns and countries. However, the life of the whole community is wrapped up with the fate of the University, as a large number of local residents are employed by the U of I. For example, on game day it seems like both towns as well as the university shut down to focus on the game. In addition, a large proportion of students are Illinois residents, with many coming from the Chicago metropolitan area.
So it comes a little surprise that the tensions felt on campus are mirrored in the community at large. If anything, Champaign and Urbana are even more susceptible to racial divisions than campus itself. Residential areas are all but segregated, being stopped for "driving while black" is not uncommon, and relations between the black community and police in the Champaign-Urbana area are not good. However this latest incident has shocked many, particularly as Kiwane was unarmed and it occurred in the middle of the day. The community as a whole is asking itself how to move forward, and how to repair relations between a black community and a police force that seem all but destroyed.
My birth mother said something that struck me when she visited last week. She tends to use biblical metaphors to describe current issues and in so doing often overreaches, but sometimes provokes deep thought. She lives in Georgia and said that as far as she was concerned young Black men are/will be killed with impunity as though someone had ordered the killing of every firstborn son of the Jews. As though the killers want to ensure there will never be another Black president.

I'm watching the show now and would love for Warren G to officially retire "Regulate" and Falva Flav to just retire tonight. Go out on top-ish guys. Or at least before the transition fully goes from nostalgic to sad.

I love Warren G but he is milking Regulate for all it's worth. I saw him in concert a few years ago and he was singing it like it was new. It's been like 15 years! Time for a new hit.

So since Jam Master J was killed Run and DMC don't perform Run-DMC cuts anymore.
But still it seems like the original artist aren't performing their own songs anyway, so I wonder who's gonna perform Run-DMC's stuff.
Cause a Def Jam tribute without RUN DMC, just ain't a real Def Jam tribute
lamh32
Now it's time for the Beasties by KRS-One and that black kid from Gym Class heroes.
Gotta admit, other than "Right to Party", I'm no fan of the Beasties. Still I know lots of people (majority of the ones I know are white) who LOVES!!! the Beasties

This photo is a reminder that the office of the presidency is respected. President Obama being saluted as Air Force One takes off.
I know that's Air Force protocol (their protocol manual is called "'Til Wheels Are Up"). I think it extends to all the services, but they're the only ones that have it explicitly written.

Guess I'm into pictures tonight. I just love love this picture. Would love to know what this young lad is thinking as he listens to President Obama. To me it seems he is looking at possibilities. It gives me goosebumps.
"The last month has seen an explosion of celebrity Twitter fights: Demi Moore traded insults with blogger Perez Hilton, singer Chris Brown took a swipe at talk show host Wendy Williams, reality show star Spencer Pratt went after Ryan Seacrest. Kanye West was bombarded with angry postings from fellow entertainers such as Pink after he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards.
In rushing to rumble on Twitter, stars are bypassing publicists long entrusted with shaping their images and offering a peek at the unadulterated personalities behind their public facades. The blunt postings alarm public relations professionals, who traditionally have exerted stringent control over what clients dole out to their fans.
"Giving some celebrities Twitter is like giving a kid a loaded gun," said Allan Mayer, head of the strategic communications division at the publicity firm 42West. "Twitter can be enormously valuable as a branding tool. But like everything else, it's a double-edged sword, and if you have impulse control problems – which strangely a lot of celebrities seem to have – it can be very dangerous."
If anyone at Fox News has 2 brain cells to rub together, they'd keep their mouths shut about this. Becky Boy ain't doing them any favors. Need me to explain why?
he's copy catting Sean Hannity.. Sean has a line so you can call up and say whatever to him should you choose to waste your valuable time...just a gimmick.
I just found out Beverly Jenkins has a new book out!!! I am sooooooooooooooooooooo geeked about it, I have to go to the bookstore before the week is out!
Yolagirl
It is EXCELLENT!
Paid full price for it, with great pleasure because anything from B. Jenkins is worth the wait and price, but last weekend I saw copies in Wal-Mart for almost $2 less than I paid :-)
Awesome! I have a Wal-Mart near my house, I will be going there tomorrow. I'm willing to pay full price if I have to, but if I don't have to, I don't mind a discount (I wouldn't have paid full price at B&N either since I have a membership card ~loL~)
vulcan_girl
The pirate book? I have it and am going to start on it soon.
have ya'll heard Usher's new song "Papers". I think I already know what some of the usual suspects will say, but let's put aside the subject matter, and I just gotta say that the rhythm and chorus is catchy as hell. I can't get that "I damn near lost my momma..." line outta my head.
What do ya'll think?
And yes, I know that Tameka told TMZ that Usher hasn't signed the papers yet, but let's be honest, that doesn't mean he doesn't want to, but don't they still have money/custody to settle before signing the "papers".
pjamma
It's kind of like "Confessions" part 3 or 4. I like it. But, I like all of Ushers "to much information" songs.
lamh32
True dat.
Though I gotta admit, that "move mountains" song on the last album. it was basically just him "whining", and if I want premo whining, then I'm gonna listen to Keith Sweat, not Usher.
For those, perhaps a majority of Northern Virginians, who plan to vote for Deeds, we ask the question: What, besides the (D) next to his name, has he done this campaign season to engender enthusiasm or support? How will someone who has overseen such a debacle of a campaign manage to run the state government?
Town
The reason Virginia is a business friendly state in the first place is because of DEMOCRATIC governors. The last 2 Republican governors wrecked the state financially and morally and I expect McDonnell to further wreck the state when he gets in there.
No doubt about it, Deeds ran a terrible campaign. But I call "boo" on the Democratic "leaders" who are raining down on Deeds. The ONLY state Dem. official I see trying to help Deeds out is Mark Warner. Everyone else washed their hands of Deeds the day he won the primary.
I also have questions about why we haven't seen any of Deeds' wife or kids. If Deeds' wife doesn't like the spotlight and doesn't want her or the kids in any of the campaign literature/ads, then it's best Deeds loses and stays in Bath County with their one stop light. If Deeds wins, his wife will be the First Lady of VA and will be expected to perform hosting duties. The First Lady gig isn't all that in the spotlight...I betcha nobody here could pick out Mark Warner's wife out of a lineup.
Something else that I see brewing are the white liberals gearing up to blame BLACK PEOPLE for Deeds' eventual loss. They're already on their little blogs and articles and postings saying that black people won't vote for Deeds because he's a white man from the sticks. I don't like that, and when* Deeds' loses, within 24 hours that's going to be the meme of the day. It's not black people who don't want to vote for the white man from the sticks, it's WHITE LIBERALS who don't want to vote for the white man from the sticks (which is also why Jerry Kilgore lost --he was from Western VA as well).
None of this means that McDonnell is great for VA. He's not and most Virginians know he's not. The fact that Deeds has run SUCH a bad campaign and McDonnell consistently can't get above 52% of the polling with a consistent 12-14% undecided means he ain't all that great as a candidate himself. The fact that people are BEGGING Deeds to give them a reason to vote for him and not for McDonnell shows me that no matter who actually wins on Election, VIRGINIA will be the loser for the next 4 years.
Deeds' sorry ass campaign also doesn't mean that McAuliffe or Moran would have been better. McAuliffe would have been kicking McDonnell's ass from the Chesapeake to Big Stone Gap but he has such HIGH negatives and never held an elective office before. Moran refused to step outside of Northern Virginia.
I fully expect Bob McDonnell to further wreck the state's finances, to have his buddies introduce social legislation that further get into people's personal business like Jim Gilmore did with the Hugh Flynn case.
The black people like Wilder and S. Johnson are only off the Deeds bandwagon/on the McDonnell bandwagon because either Deeds wouldn't kiss their asses or wouldn't promise them access.
*Creigh Deeds only lost to Bob McDonnell 4 years ago by 325 votes out of 1.5 million cast, and nobody knew who the hell Creigh Deeds was even though McDonnell had a better campaign. Hell, he could pull a Doug Wilder and win by the slimmest of slim margins.
rikyrah
i keep on asking..
what the hell kind of candidate can't take out a REPUBLICAN with that thesis of his...
it was a GIFT
and Deeds seems to be a punk ass bitch of a candidate.
In Virginia? It's really not that big a deal, unless you're in NOVA. The WaPo poll (or one of the recent ones) had 51% of Virginians polled saying that McDonnell was "about right" ideologically.
It would've been a good attack line now, heading into the final stretch. But it's worn out its welcome.
Here's what I think (meaning the campaign hat's off):
The reason Virginia is a business friendly state in the first place is because of DEMOCRATIC governors. The last 2 Republican governors wrecked the state financially...
...well, when the focus of your campaign is a 20 year old thesis, little stuff like that gets missed.
I'm gonna be honest with you, Town (and take this as you will, considering my affiliations), but Deeds hasn't done much to try to win the black vote. Every event we've been to, I've overheard that he was invited after McDonnell asked to come. And his absence at some events where we went was a source of complaint. Again, take that as you will.
I would've learned more fighting it out with Moran or McAuliffe that I have watching Deeds all but destroy himself.
