We got a lot of military and plenty of GI's that came to HI for R and R.

One day a young wife came in from DC and we had a good conversation and I invited her to bring her husband in for a cocktail (I had a policy of always buying a drink for an R and R GI). She and her husband, who was a 2nd Lt. came in and they were just delightful folks. They asked me what they should do and I gave them the usual list. But I had a day off coming up and I made them a proposition, if they would go with me to the soul food restaurant, I would take them to the best place on the island to dance, and we set it up. And so we went. I tried chitlins for the first time and have to admit, they didn't end up on my list of favorites. And you should have seen their faces when I ordered milk with my dinner.

Then we went and danced the night away at a wonderful nightclub right on the beach at Waikiki. We didn't stay in touch, and this memory coming up sent me to my photo album. They were a lovely couple and I never knew whether he made it home or not. I ashamed to say I don't even remember their names. It would be wonderful if one of them comes to your blog and sees this and lets me know how their lives went.

So, now I'll go back to lurking. But thanks for giving this old lady back a wonderful memory and a place to share it.

I haven't commented on this blog before, but your picture of the soul food restaurant brought back such a poignant memory I wanted to share it.

In the late 60's I worked as a bartender in a “disco” in Honolulu.
