I guess if Sarah Palin wants to run for president she'll have to pay off Levi "big time" either that or Levi just found a way to keep his name in the news.
"Levi Johnston Claims to Have the Goods on Sarah Palin
He also said that he only put the little things in his Vanity Fair story, “Those are just little ... things I put in Vanity Fair. You know, all the big things I got, I'm keeping -- you know, I'm keeping them in, and -- you know, it's just something that probably will never come out."
I tend to believe that he does have something. There has got to be a reason why the Palin camp went from fighting this guy to letting him say whatever he wants unanswered. If there really is a skeleton in the closet, it will come out if she runs for president in 2012. My guess is that it probably relates to her abrupt and odd resignation from her position as Alaska governor.
I think Levi is going to be a constant thorn in the side of her political ambitions. With Palin’s book due to be released in a few weeks, it will be interesting to see if she makes the full media rounds and addresses some of Johnston’s claims or if she limits herself to Oprah, and her usual media bubble."
In case you missed it. The NYT Magazine has an article on the president and First Lady titled the First Marriage. Some pics there too, a few I hadn't seen before. I'm still reading it but I like this comment the First Lady made about marriage because I believe it is the reality.
"“If my ups and downs, our ups and downs in our marriage can help young couples sort of realize that good marriages take work. . . .” Michelle Obama said a few minutes later in the interview. The image of a flawless relationship is “the last thing that we want to project,” she said. “It’s unfair to the institution of marriage, and it’s unfair for young people who are trying to build something, to project this perfection that doesn’t exist.”

At the beginning of the month, with very little fanfare, Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas), a freshman member who holds Tom DeLay’s old seat, introduced H. Res 809 to honor James O’Keefe III and Hannah Giles, the young conservatives who filmed the ACORN sting that grabbed headlines last month.
So far, the resolution is lacking support. Only two other members, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) and Rep. Henry Brown (R-S.C.), have co-sponsored it. And yesterday Olson said, dryly, that he didn’t expect Democrats to let it come to the floor. Nevertheless, here is the resolution:

H. RES. 809
Honoring the fact-finding reporting done by Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe III in their investigation in the fraudulent and illegal practices and misuse of taxpayer dollars by the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now (ACORN).

Scientists say curry compound kills cancer cells http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091028/...s_cancer... LONDON (Reuters) – A molecule found in a curry ingredient can kill esophageal cancer cells in the laboratory, suggesting it might be developed as an anti-cancer treatment, scientists said on Wednesday. Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin -- a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow color -- and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. The cells also began to digest themselves, they said in a study published in the British Journal of Cancer. Previous scientific studies have suggested curcumin can suppress tumors and that people who eat lots of curry may be less prone to the disease, although curcumin loses its anti-cancer attributes quickly when ingested. But Sharon McKenna, lead author of the Irish study, said her study suggested a potential for scientists to develop curcumin as an anti-cancer drug to treat esophageal cancer. Cancers of the esophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year. The tumors are especially deadly, with five-year survival rates of just 12 to 31 percent. McKenna said the study showed curcumin caused the cancer cells to die "using an unexpected system of cell messages." Normally, faulty cells die by committing programed suicide, or apoptosis, which occurs when proteins called caspases are 'switched on' in cells, the researchers said. But these cells showed no evidence of suicide, and the addition of a molecule that inhibits caspases and stops this "switch being flicked' made no difference to the number of cells that died, suggesting curcumin attacked the cancer cells using an alternative cell signaling system. U.S. researchers said in 2007 they had found curcumin may help stimulate immune system cells in the Alzheimer's disease. (Reporting by Kate Kelland; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

"In the end, Pelosi, D-Calif., and other House leaders were unable to round up the necessary votes for their preferred version of the government insurance plan – one that would base payment rates to providers on rates paid by Medicare. Instead, the health and human services secretary would be allowed to negotiate rates with providers and the program would be optional for states, the approach preferred by moderates and the one that will be featured in the Senate's version.
I guess the "robust" public option died. The house never had the votes for it, and it was dead in the Senate from the getgo. So why did progressives make such a big deal about it?

No, "teabagging" isn't my cause. I'm supportive of the Tea Party Patriots (that was the first time I had seen the Hampton Roads group since back in April).
I was pinned/stickered up yesterday (they were on the other side of my coat), which made for an interesting moment when I went to talk to a friend who's Deeds' field director down here.

Attorneys general in 40 states just asked the FTC to step up the fight against debt relief companies that mislead and overcharge consumers, like Credit Solutions of America (CSA), reports Consumer Affairs.
Why are so many states going after debt relief companies? Because they insert themselves between consumers and creditors and suck up the money earmarked for creditors by promising that they're going to renegotiate payments—and then they don't keep that promise.
According to a lawsuit by the Illinois Attorney General, Credit Solutions of America does just that; it "continually fails to negotiate with consumers' creditors even though consumers cease to pay their creditors directly and, instead, make months of upfront payments to CSA."
So now the AGs are asking the FTC to tighten telemarketing rules, like prohibiting them from collecting fees before rendering services.
"In an ever-building wave of ploys and scams on consumers, debt settlement and debt negotiation companies promise to help consumers eliminate or reduce their debts, but often fail to deliver on these promises," said Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray. "Tougher regulations will help to rein in some of the most deceptive and unfair practices in this industry."

Bucks NAACP protests image given 8th graders
The Bucks County NAACP called for disciplinary action and teacher sensitivity training in the Central Bucks School District yesterday after an eighth-grade math class at Lenape Middle School got a homework assignment with an image of a black man that the group called "insulting" and "disparaging."
The picture - with the caption "Solving Equations Using Multiplication and Division!" - shows an unshaven black man with a straw hat and a gaping mouth missing most teeth. Beneath it is the slang expression "No Wai!!!"
The principal of the Doylestown school, NAACP officials, and the parents of an African American student in the class met yesterday about the incident. NAACP president John Jordan said he was satisfied with the outcome, which he said would include "consequences" for the teacher and training for the staff.

Barack Obama Hates Women by John Cole
This is just asinine:
Jesse Taylor deals with this nonsense, but I think it is important to single out Savannah Guthrie for starting all this nonsense:
NBC White House correspondent Savannah Guthrie asked him that earlier this week. She asked him if his preference for all-male hoops sends the wrong signal. Or as she put it, “Some people might look at it and say, ‘Gosh, there’s the old boys club again.’”
Well done, Savannah. Next to the #dickwhisper’s question about Obama’s bathing suit, this is the biggest waste of time by a reporter with access that I’ve seen. And, with an assist from the insiders like Tapper who want to stir things up even when there is no there there, all of a sudden we have PUMA’s and wingnuts running around screaming that Obama is a sexist. Because he plays basketball with Reggie Love instead of Anita Dunn.
The endgame of this is so obvious. This isn’t about sexism. This isn’t about Barack Obama. This is another beltway game where the press sees how much they can make the administration jump. Are they really proposing that Janet Napolitano come out and do some half court with Obama, the UNC guys, and secret service agents? Do they want Lisa Leslie on retainer?
No. This is about power and control, and this is about driving traffic to their respective website/network. They want to make the WH squirm and if they get really lucky over-react, and what better way to do it than pointless allegations of sexism? They’re just asking questions that matter, you see. “Some say it’s an all boys club,” or “Some say this looks bad” or “some say you have a problem with women.” And then what they want is for Obama to stage an all women’s game or a mixed game for the cameras, and they can say “See, there was a problem, and our focus on this issue corrected it!” Who says investigative journalism is dead! And they will pretend they have accomplished something, while ignoring the Republicans blocking everything on health care and the robber barons on Wall Street continue to rape main street and the taxpayers and so on.
There’s your liberal media. Assholes, all of them. Seriously- go read David Brock’s books. Go read Joe Conason’s The Hunting of the President. It is clear what is going on here.
*** Update ***
I should probably add that what makes Guthrie’s effort so awesome is that she took Candy Crowley’s “some people say” to a whole new level. She didn’t just use the hoary old “some people say,” she kicked it up a notch and used “Some people might look at it and say.” I mean, how f-ing awesome is that? Some people might say just about anything, so if you want to stir shit up as a reporter, you can just make up any old bullshit, because SOME PEOPLE MIGHT SAY IT! Somewhere, Savannah Guthrie’s j-school professors just hanged themselves. http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=28841

Conservative right-wing author Brad O’Leary, who heads PM Direct Marketing and is promoting his new book, “Shut Up America–The End of Free Speech,” co-authored a poll with Zogby, filled with misleading questions and false statements that could have been written by Glenn Beck. Not surprisingly, O’Leary is a frequent guest on Fox News programs.
The not only misleading, but also race-baiting and bigoted Zogby/O’Leary Poll, claims that the results show that, “President Obama’s Attacks on Free Speech Opposed by Most Americans,” as announced in a mass email sent out by O’Leary. How convenient for O’Leary’s book sales.
The poll attacks the Hate Crimes Bill, using all of the discredited right-wing talking points against it to bash gays and more egregiously, it misstates a statement made by Mark Lloyd, Chief Diversity Officer for the FCC, falsely claiming that Lloyd wants the FCC to remove whites from positions of power in the broadcast industry to replace them with blacks and gays. Outrageous!
...
As noted by Think Progress, “The most absurd attacks have come from pundits like right-wing radio host Michael Savage, who has called Lloyd a “neo-Nazi,” and “piece of garbage” intent on closing down “conservatives in the media.”
Read question no. 4 smearing Mark Lloyd, and the Obama administration, which refers to a non-existent FCC policy:
4. Federal Communications Commission Chief Diversity Czar Mark Lloyd wants the FCC to force good white people in positions of power in the broadcast industry to step down to make room for more African-Americans and gaysto fill those positions.
Do you agree or disagree that this presents a threat to free speech?
This question is based on a lie. It takes one statement made by Lloyd during a 2005 appearance on a discussion panel at the St Louis, MO Conference on Media Reform :Racial Justice & Media Policy, and twists it to make it appear he was advocating the removal of “good white people,” which is not the case.
I read where some Dummycrats will vote with the republicans if any abortion services are in the final bill,Bart Stupak of Mich. being the lead dummy. Now ,one would think being from Mich with its dying manufacturing base in part because of health cost he would have more pressing concerns. Now my question is should we cave on reprodutive rights just to get the bill passed?
Mothsmoke
My answer would be a resounding "NO!" We've fought long and hard in this country for reproductive rights and when you start to give an inch, expect to lose a foot. With that said, I don't think anyone on the Hill for HCR or in the WH is going to let anything get in the way of getting some kind of HCR bill passed. In other words, reproductive rights be damned.
I suspect a lot of dealmaking is going on. It will be interesting to see just what HCR truly costs us.

The Rude Pundit Proudly lowering the level of political discourse
10/28/2009 The "War" In Afghanistan Is Over: Okay, enough. We've tolerated this "war" in Afghanistan long enough. Both of the conflicts started by the Bush administration were the arrogant indulgences of a bloated, louche empire in decline. Like wealthy, young Victorian Brits who went off for a couple of years to Africa or India for an adventure among the brown people, this white colonial expedition is nothing more than a pathetic projection of putative power, and, like those Brits, some of whom made fortunes exploiting the lands and others who returned horribly scarred and dismembered, it's time to admit we're spread too thin and that if we haven't failed yet, failure, however long deferred, is merely the inevitable outcome of a mission that was doomed from day one.
Bush fucked it up from the start in making it a "war." He tossed a bunch of goals into a big muck pit instead of doing shit one thing at a time. What should have started as an international criminal pursuit of those responsible for the 9/11 attacks, followed by any military action, if necessary, began as "bomb the fuck out of 'em." Here's the thing: you bomb the fuck out of people who are used to having the fuck bombed out of them then your fucking bombs aren't really going to do much of anything.
But we indulged, on the left, on the right, no, not everyone, but most of us, because of a very human desire for revenge. What that "most" didn't recognize was how irrational it was. And when the invasion of Iraq happened, Afghanistan became that white noise in the background, and we had another, more comfortable target to use as evidence of the irrationality of the previous American regime.
Afghanistan long ago stopped being the "good war," if it ever was, in comparison to Iraq. It's barely a "war" at all. A war is an army fighting an army. The Taliban is a bunch of vaguely organized zealots who make the Vietcong look like the Redcoats. And the United States is merely in the middle of a long and violent internal conflict there, as former Foreign Service Officer Matthew Hoh said upon resigning over the "war." In other words, we are no longer there to pursue al-Qaeda, which is everywhere, including in the United States and Europe; we are invaders propping up a corrupt system we like over the corrupt one we don't. (Which is pretty much par for the course for American foreign policy.) Besides, Afghanistan isn't really a country. It's turf for competing drug gangs. It's time for some in the government and the public to stop thinking that it's like Japan or Germany. Fuck, at this point, Vietnam would be an improvement.
That means President Obama needs to smack down General Stanley McChrystal and his request for tens of thousands of new troops, which might have done something eight years ago. You don't get do-overs. You get to do and then be done. Frankly, it's disgusting to even entertain the idea that a surge would succeed in anything. As the recent bombing in Iraq demonstrated, if fuckin' people wanna fight, if fuckin' people have been fighting forever, they're gonna fight, no matter how long they have to wait to do it. We can keep building thicker walls with the bodies of our soldiers and their citizens, but those will be breached.
The right dithers over whether or not President Obama is dithering, forgetting that George W. Bush took four weeks to decide how to go after the people who attacked us in 2001, and the casualties mount in Afghanistan. Here in the United States, we keep talking about whether or not we can afford health care for all (or funds for education or job programs or infrastructure). Hearing people talk about raising the bet on the "war" is like listening to your bankrupt brother justify why he should pay his cable bill before he buys healthy meals for his kids.
We're not the nation we were in 2001. We are a shadow of that country. We have been chastened. We haven't been defeated. We have defeated ourselves. It's time to admit it, withdraw, and start to heal within.

Sarah Palin’s Fond Farewell to Disclosure Reports. Well, here it is. Sarah Palin’s last report to APOC.
I will leave the detailed dissection to those who are suited to such things, but here’s me sort of live blogging the document.
Using an outdated form, she has crossed out the old dates and written in new ones. Is the new form the same as the old form? If it is, then why would they print the date range on them?
I find it amusing that her name appears at the top of the form as: S’ARAH, with an apostrophe after the S. Don’t know why. Just do. Perhaps it’s because it may confirm that English is not her first language.
The form is filled out in long hand, in kind of a scrawly block print, if there can be such a thing.
Her mailing address is listed as the office of her attorney, Thomas Van Flein. His phone number is given. Understandable. “Hey, Sarah! Is your refrigerator running?” That would get old fast.
Wasn't he a Republican? If so, how come the Republicans (black or otherwise) never give him any shine?
