However, if these symbols are used to 'wash clean' one's guilt about an issue and an attempt to bury it under the ground, then I have to object. In my opinion this is the case in the Netherlands. Every year everyone in the Netherlands, and the rest of the world, remember the horrors of the Holocaust, yet there is not such a large scale memorial day awareness for slavery. I have raised this numerous times with my Dutch friends and their reactions are all the same. 'Why are you talking about this? We have paid our dues and its in the past.' After hearing this then I wonder... was the memorial in Oosterpark really meant to help us remember the atroscities of slavery... or was it a cheap way of shutting us up about the past?
