No one seems to notice, but the Chinese and the Indians are going to EAT OUR LUNCH. While our kids a numbing themselves on TV, video games, and other superficial crap, they are making a massive education effort. There are even states that actually force science, evolution, and math out of schools, replacing it with creationist drivel. This country is becoming a place where a small educated class will have dominion over the uneducated masses. Already, most people (not just kids) don't even know basic things like the capital of their state, or what the Constitution is. It is not a matter of color either, as we have seen on the news there are a WHOLE LOT of uneducated white people too, all screaming for President Obama's head.

Those of you in here who do have kids in your family, you must, MUST make sure that they stay in school, get educated and into college. Theirs and the country's future depends on it.

I am only in favor of merit pay if the students are pre-tested and post tested.? I don't want the teachers who have classes of students that are already advanced getting better pay if they do not push their students.

President Obama has consistently proposed extra pay for better teachers. As a teacher, what do you think of the merit pay proposal? My brother is a high school principal and he loves this idea. I have no dog in this fight, just trying to learn.

A report released last week by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) entitled "Importing Educators: Causes and Consequences of International Teacher Recruitment" has revealed that "some American school districts have turned increasingly to overseas recruiting to find teachers" to fill teaching vacancies. I hear you. as the daughter and relative of many teachers, I don't wanna hear anything about extending the schoolday without talking about raising teacher salaries. Teachers are already asked to do way more than teach, so as far as I'm concerned, not talking about raising teacher salaries is just blowing smoke up the ass.

Continuing this train of thought, inner city AP < suburban “rest.” I'm not going to knock teachers. We all know they do what they can w/limited resources. I'd like to learn more on the teaching to black students v. leaving “less thans” behind etc.

The longer school terms/days won't help one bit because public schools still aren't teaching kids to think critically and wonder. Even the better school systems in this country aren't really developing analytical or creative thinkers. Many of the best schools are really 2 separate schools- the AP/IB students & the rest.

I've heard the income/achievement gap argument as well as the idle time/discipline argument. There are some valid points to each. Unfortunately, the year-long public school programs I'm most familiar with are not much more than glorified day care centers- even with a dedicated teaching staff. If you aren't in the "right" classes or tracks, it doesn't matter how long you are in school. My daughter was in AP & spoke about the noticeable difference in the way the entire school staff dealt with AP vs non-AP kids. AP are taught like young adults.

I think the focus should be toward bringing in more innovative evocative teaching methods to the lower level courses, getting more of our kids to challenge themselves with the higher level courses available, and yes PAYING TEACHERS MUCH MORE.
