Tourism boycott threatened over Wilson's 'You lie' outburst

WASHINGTON — State and local tourism officials are being flooded by emails and calls from people across the country, saying they won't vacation in South Carolina because they're upset by GOP Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst at President Barack Obama.

The officials said that a number of the out-of-state e-mailers have said they've taken beach trips for years in Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and other South Carolina resort areas, but don't plan to return.

In Washington, House Democratic leaders Monday finalized drafting a measure reprimanding Wilson for yelling "you lie!" at Obama last week while he addressed a joint session of Congress.

"It was a breach of conduct that brought discredit to the House," said Kristie Greco, a spokesman for House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, the House's third-ranking Democrat. "The resolution of disapproval will address his breach of conduct."

The resolution being drafted cites a clause of the "House Rules and Manual," which governs members' conduct. The clause specifically prohibits calling the president a liar.

Wilson upped the ante by going to the House floor Monday and speaking out against Obama's bid to expand government health benefits for millions of uninsured Americans.

"During the August recess, I was honored to host the largest congressional town halls in the history of South Carolina — 1,700 in Columbia, 1,500 in Lexington, 1,500 in Beaufort, and 1,200 in Hilton Head," Wilson said.

"During my 25 years of serving the public in the state Senate and Congress, I have not seen such passionate events full of patriots — 95 percent of whom support health insurance reform but not a government takeover," he said.

Other Republican lawmakers spoke on the House floor in Wilson's defense.

"No one has a claim to any further redress if the president of the United States accepts an apology, and he did," said Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican. "So I stand with Joe Wilson. Let's get on with the business of this House, and let's start running the country instead of taking cheap political shots."

Everyday I pray for my husbands's safety.

He travels really far for work on public transportation and I am worried about the environment out there.

UPDATE: Thank you all for your kind words. This diary has sparked something and I am glad I spoke out. Many AA are speaking out but not being covered and we are very upset. Even more so because now they are saying that Congress should not reprimand Wilson for treating the Prez with so much disrespect. He treated the Prez like a boy in front of the world and this is not resting well with many in AA community along with the blatant racism against him. Thanx alot.

I did not want to write this diary but the nastiness is rising so fast out there that I have to share how I feel.

The other day my daughter and I were walking to the PO and someone yelled
'Black Bitches" at us from a driving truck.

I even worry about standing at the bus stop alone waiting for my daughter to get off the bus. The only place to stand is right on the corner of the mains street and it is very quiet and empty.

There is a Confederate flag hanging prominently on our way out of the neighborhood.

The school speech given by Obama was banned by our kid's school with no notice sent out and my daughter really felt hurt by it.

What am I to tell her? I told her the truth.

Everytime we turn on the tv we see people ranting and raving and hating our President.

I go to bed with a feeling of disquiet every night and I go through the day with the same feeling and it is not going away.

I feel as if something is in the air: as if something is imminent.

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 10) - An Indiana court has ruled that a pizza shop must pay for a 340-pound employee's weight-loss surgery to ensure the success of another operation for a back injury he suffered at work — raising concern among businesses bracing for more such claims.
The Indiana Court of Appeals decision, coupled with a recent Oregon court ruling, could make employers think twice before hiring workers with health conditions that might cost their companies thousands of dollars at a shot down the road.
"This kind of situation will happen again ... and employers are undoubtedly worried about that," said Lewis Maltby, president of the National Workrights Institute in Princeton, N.J., an offshoot of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Boston's The Gourmet Pizza must pay for lap-band surgery for Adam Childers, a cook at the store in Schererville, under last month's Indiana ruling that upheld a 4-3 decision by the state's workers' compensation board.

What swept her off her feet were the stories behind the labels: black winemakers struggling to survive, post-apartheid, in an industry dominated by whites and in a market suspicious of new players.

"It was like a bright light went off in my head," said Cuffe, a high-energy 33-year-old with a Harvard MBA, marketing experience at Proctor & Gamble Co. and a desire, as an African American, to give a hand to black entrepreneurs in South Africa.

During a CNBC interview on Monday, President Obama called hip-hop artist Kanye West a "jackass" over his behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards. (Watch video of Kanye at the VMAs here.)

Obama's colorful remark was actually made in an off-the-record portion of the interview that was tweeted -- and then deleted -- by ABC News reporter Terry Moran.

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran wrote.

Politico's Michael Calderone has ABC's statement apologizing for Moran's journalistic breach.

I watched the beginning of this program or the program that preceded it and provided some interesting facts about the U.S. prison system, its privatization and its growth based on its observance of 3rd and 4th grade reading levels in the U.S.

We should be teaching our kids, they have only two choices.

WASHINGTON — Jody Powell, the longest-serving and probably closest aide to former President Jimmy Carter, died on Monday at his home near Cambridge on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, said Jack Nelson, the journalist and his friend. He was 65.

Mr. Powell collapsed outside his home, and efforts to revive him at a hospital were unsuccessful, Mr. Nelson said. He added that Mr. Powell’s wife, Nan, said that her husband had suffered a heart attack.
