However I would prefer the 2003 Obama, the community-activist, turned statesman Obama. I prefer the Obama that would have taken "Change we can believe" as a to the mandate for universal, single-payer health care.
President Obama's political genius is pragmatism which lies in the art/science of compromise, the salve of our adversarial tradition, also know as good lawyerin'. The parties involved in this compromise are the for-profit health care industry and the American people. Health care reform begins with the courage to face-off with the health care industry.
The proposed legislation is the first battle of an eight stage war. I support the President in his efforts to deliver on his campaign promise of health care reform.
I live in Texas. Health care reform is needed badly, statewide. Our undocumented immigrants issues (Lou Dobbs is loved here), right to work policy (anti-union), and the conservative/Republican oligarchy complicate health care reform in the Lone Star state. Our only hope is national health care reform. We must remember that the same states that resist the Obama administration's health care reforms, resisted civil rights legislation, and, by the way, are former Confederate states. Thank God Texas is a state in the United States!
I contend that a portion of the anger and discord of the opposition expressed in this health care debate is race prejudice directed at President Obama. The vitriol of the "town hall meetings" spoke of "un -Americaness" and socialism in reference to President Obama and his supporters. Just think about, these people believe that the democratically-elected, President of the US is un-American. It has only been seven months.
