Right, and she's going to have a fit trying to comb it later because it looks nappy. if you're going to run out and adopt an African (or African American) baby girl, learn how to do her hair! You can't just let her roll out of the bed and go on about her business. . . If you don't want to do it every day, get someone to braid it, it'll last at least a week.
Hell, I'm not asking for a press and curl, just put it in a ponytail or something, don't have it sticking up all over her head. My parents would have NEVER let me out of the house looking like that, and I wouldn't let my daughter out the house looking like that either (if I had one)
Turning it blue comes down to grassroots organizing, yet again. However, I didn't realize how close to purple Texas really is...
texasladybird
I'm glad somebody is talking about us TX Democrats!
Austin tends to lean very liberal, while pockets of Houston and Dallas turn out Democratic voters in pretty large numbers. And even Denton, while a conservative town, has two colleges that add a liberal presence.
Texas could very well turn blue in 2012, but as you said Evita, it's gonna take grassroots organizing.
By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat. The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations. Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system. The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises. Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result." Such an authority would have to be "regulated by law" and "would need to be universally recognized and to be vested with the effective power to ensure security for all, regard for justice, and respect for rights." "Obviously it would have to have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums," he said.
As soon as the Pope starts to sell all the gold in his "palace," and cuts my momma a check (truthfully the only REAL Catholic I know,) I'll start paying attention to his hypocritical policy recommendations.

Just got this email:
There's some good news, some bad news, and more good news… The good news: Since last week, 12,000 people signed our TV ad at WeWantThePublicOption.com and it has aired over 100 times in DC! The Washington Post reported Sunday that Democratic senators are shaken up by our pressure. And today, Sen. Kay Hagan -- named in our ad and others -- announced she'll support the public option. The bad news: The Hill newspaper reported last night that half-a-dozen Senate Democrats still might "buck their party" and undermine the public option. And today, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel began to cave -- calling the public option "negotiable."
More good news: President Obama issued a statement from Russia today that seemed to reverse Rahm Emanuel's remarks. He said he wants a public option in the final bill.
The bottom line: This is still an all-out battle, it's changing every day, and regular people like us can continue to impact the fight. Can you add to our momentum by putting your name in our TV ad? Just click here. Equally important, please forward this email to others so our grassroots campaign grows. If you support this effort but don't want your name in an ad, that's ok -- that's an option when you sign up.
(Or, you can chip in to keep our hard-hitting ads on TV for a second week by clicking here. Every three donations of $50 allow one more ad on MSNBC.) We're rotating new names into the TV ad every day -- and we'll keep these ads on the air as long as public support for them keeps growing. Thanks so much for being a bold progressive.

somehow my earlier response wasn't to this message it was meant for your post on possibly adopting!
Val
what was your response Angelar? I retracted my original post when I thought about how busy JJP was discussing Michael Jackson. Figured I would ask later.
My question was -- Do you think I am a lunatic to consider adopting 2 additional kids when I have 4 children already? My 8 year old daughter asked me and her Daddy to give her 2 more siblings because as she puts it we have "lots of love to go around and 3 empty rooms". When I asked her where would we get 2 more kids she (without any hesitation) said the orphanage.
Am I crazy for actually thinking about it? My husband is open to the idea as well but he wants to make sure it is what I want to do. Financially we can afford it but I know JJP can help me get a clearer sense of everything. (Ya'll know I am a sucker and would adopt a nation of seniors and kids if I could). Or would I accomplish more if I became a foster parent? (i.e help more kids than just two)
Angelar
my response to your original post was that I thought adopting was "selfless, courageous and giving." I was horrified when I thought my response answered something about Michael Steele and Palin!!!!!
"You can say that all of us who ever took Sarah Palin seriously -- or pretended to take her seriously -- should be deeply ashamed. And you can say that John McCain should publicly apologize for putting the nation he loves at risk by choosing Palin as his running mate. Imagining Palin within a heartbeat of the presidency should be enough to make even die-hard Republicans shudder.
The reasons she gave for stepping down are not just contrived or implausible but literally nonsensical. She can most effectively serve the people of Alaska by ceasing to exercise the powers of chief executive? She worries that as a lame duck she would somehow be compelled to waste taxpayer money on useless junkets? In her "Don't Cry For Me, Alaska" news conference announcing her departure, the folksy non sequiturs -- "Only dead fish go with the flow" -- were like nuggets of Cartesian logic amid a tub of mush.
But I'm stating the obvious. The thing is, Palin's unsuitability for high public office has been obvious all along. Tina Fey got it right; the rest of us were far too reluctant to state plainly that the emperor, or empress, has no clothes."
With all well documented and litigated record of of misuse of Alaska's time and money it is clear she knows the free ride is over.
I bet she had some speaking engagements lined up that will pay her more than the salary she makes as a public servant and that's why she is out of there. All this "I don't know what's next" to me is a stinking lie. Who wants to wager when she'll be up and speaking for pay. REALLY soon. First stop, Dubai?
I'm also wondering when the sex tape will come out... 6 months?
Angelar
I read today that she could make at least 20 million within a year between her book and speaking engagement....no wonder being the gov has lost its shine.
July 7, 2009 Obama girls take Russia by storm Posted: 02:20 PM ET
From CNN White House Correspondent Ed Henry
Sasha Obama wandered into President Obama's bed early Tuesday morning to have a chat with her parents.
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) — An unexpected visitor wandered into the bedroom of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in the wee hours of Tuesday morning — but the Secret Service wasn't worried about a security breach.
The visitor was 8-year-old Sasha Obama, who's touring Russia along with her older sister Malia. The younger girl could not contain her excitement about Dad's fifth foreign trip in office, so she decided to wake her parents to tell them about it, the president cheerfully recounted in a CNN interview.
"Sasha this morning around 4 am just wandered into our bed and plopped down and started chatting," Obama said in the interview a few hours later. "That was sort of a highlight, although I'm a little groggy now as a consequence."
Both Obama daughters are along for the ride this time around because school is out of session back in the Washington, D.C., area, allowing them to travel overseas on weekdays without missing classes. On an earlier presidential visit to France, Sasha and Malia showed up in Paris on a weekend after school was done for the week.
Asked if having his daughters joining his wife on a high-profile trip helps take the edge off the tough diplomatic negotiations, Obama told CNN it's fantastic to have his girls "being able to see the world and then report back to us on what they are seeing" on the trip, which included the daughters getting to check out the Kremlin.
"You know it makes a huge difference," said the president. "The girls are just a joy. And then Michelle just, she's always — she's a star at home and abroad."

Some pictures of the First Family for those who haven't seen them. I love #2 of Sasha, but most are good (sop).
I wanted to get this in before the memorial starts. I've been highly critical of Eugene Robinson the last few months, but his column today is MUST read. He nails the media and political class for the undeserved respect paid to Palin. The only asterisk I would add is that she's not treated with respect because she's a woman and rural, but because she's a white rural woman. No woman of color could ever get away with this bull shit.
Putin praises Bush hospitality during Obama visit Tue Jul 7, 2009 4:22am EDT
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin praised the hospitality and openness of U.S. former President George W. Bush in a telegramme sent hours before meeting his successor Barack Obama.
"During the last years we have been working on strengthening Russia-U.S. cooperation. Although there were differences between our countries, I always valued your openness and sincerity," Putin said, congratulating Bush on his 63rd birthday on July 6.
"With special warmth I recall your hospitality in the Crawford ranch and your family estate in Kennebunkport," Putin wrote, referring to their 2007 meeting at the Bush family vacation home when the two leaders went fishing and ate lobster.
Bush had said he "was able to get a sense of his soul" when he first met Putin and since then their warm rapport has helped limit the damage from a series of rows that returned ties between their administrations to chilly Cold War lows.
On Tuesday, Putin, who stepped down as president last year but remains the most influential Russian politician, invited Obama for a "Russian-style" breakfast during their first meeting at Putin's forest residence outside Moscow.
Russian agencies, quoting the government's press service, said Putin treated Obama to black caviar with sour cream, smoked beluga with pancakes and tea made in the traditional Russian samovar, a big coal-fired kettle.
[W]hen I asked Palin if she ever decided to pursue national office again, as she did less than a year ago when she joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the race for the White House, wouldn't she encounter the same political blood sport? Can such ugliness ever be avoided?
Palin said there is a difference between the White House and what she has experienced in Alaska. If she were in the White House the "department of law" would protect her from baseless ethical allegations.
"I think on a national level your department of law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out," she said.
There is no "Department of Law" at the White House.

This is the woman who could have been vice-president right now. McCain and company worked hard to convince the public that she was even better than Obama. Everytime she opens her mouth she reflects poorly on all of those who were touting her as the best thing since sliced bread.

I simply love Sarah Palin. She really makes my day.
These folks are unreal. You know a black woman would never get this coddling from of all people Pat BucKKKlanan.
MsKitty
I swear every time I read or hear something this woman says I get an instant migraine. I'm dead serious when I say Palin needs a translator, subtitles, something that helps people with functioning brain cells understand what the hell she's talking about.
Val
When I hear her I always come back to the same question . . . Is there such a thing as "speech" dyslexia. If not it should be and she would be an excellent candidate for treatment.
Miranda
Maybe its not English she's speaking. We just assume that's what it is.
NMP
I've been off the grid all weekend, so I missed Sarah Palin 'always a good point guard, never a dead fish' conversation, but I did catch the evening talk shows yesterday. Imagine my surprise listening to Ed Schultz not only defend Sarah Palin but seemed to be writing her 2012 campaign script. Now I know I've caused a few eyes to roll around here with my warnings never to trust white "progressives", but if his performance yesterday doesn't at least give you pause, something is wrong. And I don't want to hear that he's using reverse psychology in attempt to get Republicans to embrace Sarah Palin because she's the easiest to beat. He's showing his true color. He's a typical "former" Reagan Democrat, like his friend Taylor Marsh who is also defending Sarah Palin, looking for a new leader. And he's found in it Sarah Palin.
Like many first ladies, Michelle Obama spends a lot of her time in public with children. Her visit Moscow was no different. Mrs. Obama visited the St. Dmitriy Orphanage, meeting with about two dozen children.
The children range in age from four to 16, some are true orphans, some disabled, others come from so called “vulnerable families” – those with more than four to five children, who simply need help.
Several of the children performed for Mrs. Obama – some sang, others played piano. They presented her with handmade gifts, including a large geometrical ball made from paper, and a large framed hand embroidered flower. The young girl who presented the flower said it had taken her two days to complete.
The children asked Mrs. Obama how many children she has. She responded, two girls, including one named Sasha. Mrs. Obama explained that Natasha is Sasha’s full name, and that it is the President’s favorite name.
“How many Sasha’s do you have here?” she asked the group. There were three in all. Mrs. Obama told the children that her daughters are spending the day with their grandmother making dolls.
St. Dmitriy’s founder, Father Shatov Arkady, led the Mrs. Obama on her visit and said he wished she could stay forever. The First Lady choose to visit St. Dmitriy’s in part because it receives funding through USAID and the United Nations Development Program. After meeting with the children, Father Arkady took Mrs. Obama to meet with nursing students, who study in the same building.
The 20 faith-based nurses (not nuns) help St. Dmitriy’s with the orphans, and do larger outreach to help the sick in the community. Mrs. Obama spoke to the students about her own work at the University of Chicago’s Hospital before becoming first lady and the importance of volunteerism. She explained that in her new role, national service is one of her “signature projects.”
The nurses also presented Mrs. Obama with a gift – three hand-painted sets of matryoshka or “nesting” dolls. Upon request, Mrs. Obama signed a poster hanging on the wall.
Later this afternoon, some of the orphans, along with several hundred school children, will join Mrs. Obama and her Russian counterpart, Svetlana Medvedev, to watch the Moiseyev Dance Company perform.

I know this may get me flamed or cause accusations of prejudice, but does anyone else sometimes get tired of white people and their inadvertent prejudiced ramblings, i.e. billo and the "why do black people like MJ". Ah billo WHITE PEOPLE LIKE MJ TOO!! There is no way a black artist can have the success that MJ had, particularly in America, if ONLY black people liked them.
It just pisses me off to the point where I don't even want to look at them. I know, I know all white people are not the same, but damnit sometimes it don't matter. It's like after watching a marathon of ROOTS, GLORY, Color Purple, Miss Jane Pittman, KING, hell Do The Right Thing, etc... you just don't want to see any white face for at least 1 day.
Hell, there were times during the election with all the birth certificate, muslim or not, "whitey" tape, rev wright, "pallin' 'round with terrorist", etc where I didn't even want to look some of my co-workers in the face, cause I just knew they were probably Faux News watchers. Even now, I still give some of them the side eye.
Anyone know what I mean.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling now...back to work.

LOL!
I get like that when I'll read an article on the Internet, get ticked off, and then remember I live in a "Red State", but work at a moderately liberal university. My nerves would be so shot you could whisper "boo!" and I'd head into orbit.
I used to be able to sit through FauxNews until I got tired of the neo-con slant and finally coming to grips over the fact that this BillO dude was the same cat I used to watch on Inside Edition, Geraldo/Ollie North giving words of wisdom, and a former wrestler from the WWE giving financial tips.
If that ain't as blatant as "Palin around with separatists" and H.W's son Dubya becoming a "2-term POTUS", I don't know what it will take...ROFLMBAO!!!
Miranda
"Anyone know what I mean."
Yeah...I call that yesterday, today...and tomorrow.

The vast majority of us know exactly what you mean. But part of being Black in America means not being able to have a "day off" from White people (unless you call in sick, turn off your radio, your TV, your computer, and refuse to read ANYTHING with pictures).
spirit_55z
"turn off your radio, your TV, your computer, and refuse to read ANYTHING with pictures)."
Which is exactly what I do twice a month. FAST from white folks! Imagine how refreshing and healing that is.

I know what you mean....without a doubt!! It's the damage Faux News continues to do to America!

Step away from Faux News. It will make anyone frustrated and in need of a shower. You are right, not all white people are like them. But, thanks to Faux, you may need a white folk break so you don't develop bad feeling toward the normal white folk, who are good people, unlike the Faux extreamist.
Think of Faux as the white BET, showcasing the worst of their race. Except for Shep. Shep is cool.

POTUS gaffes about meeting wife
By JOSH GERSTEIN | 07/07/09 8:19 AM
Obama, who has seemed to set an impossibly high bar for many men when it comes to dealing with their wives, finally stumbled. Read full story.
With a huge "not so perfect" above it. So I click the article (yeah, I know bad move) and this is the bullshit I see:
Barack Obama proves to be mortal husband
Husbands of the world rejoice!
President Barack Obama, who has seemed to set an impossibly high bar for many men when it comes to dealing with their wives, has finally stumbled — and in a very public way.
“I don’t know if anybody else will meet their future wife or husband in class like I did, but I’m sure that you’re all going to have wonderful careers,” he said as he warmed up the audience before delivering a commencement speech at an economics school in Moscow Tuesday.
Obama seemed to be playing off an introduction that referred to him meeting his future wife, Michelle Robinson, while he was a student. But the truth is that the couple met not “in class” but at a law firm in Chicago, Sidley Austin, in 1989. Obama was a summer associate (essentially a legal intern) there and Robinson was an attorney completing her first year at the firm. Both attended Harvard Law School, but Michelle graduated in the spring of 1988, while Barack Obama did not arrive at the Cambridge, Mass., campus until that fall.
It was unclear what prompted Obama’s confusion or lapse of memory, though he does have the excuse of jet lag. It was about 4 a.m. in Washington as he spoke.
The episode is sure to generate some schadenfreude, since Obama’s “date nights” taking Michelle to a Broadway show and to a fancy Paris restaurant led to feelings of inadequacy on the part of many husbands.
Unfortunately for the big guy, Michelle Obama is along for the trip and was on hand for the speech, so the president is almost certain to get an earful.
What? Politico not journalism? What was your first clue?

Hospitals Reach Deal With Administration $155 Billion in Health Savings Offered
By Ceci Connolly and Michael D. Shear Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, July 7, 2009
The nation's hospitals agreed last night to contribute $155 billion over 10 years toward the cost of insuring the 47 million Americans without health coverage, according to two industry sources.
The agreement that three hospital associations reached with White House officials and leaders of the Senate Finance Committee is the latest in a series of side deals that aim to reduce the cost of revamping the nation's health-care system and to neutralize influential industries that have historically opposed such reforms.
With President Obama out of the country, a formal announcement is expected tomorrow from Vice President Biden.
"Getting health-care reform is absolutely critical," said one hospital negotiator, who was not authorized to speak for attribution about the deal before the official announcement. "This is our attempt to act in good faith."
Most of the savings -- about $100 billion -- would come through lower-than-expected Medicare and Medicaid payments to hospitals, said the two industry sources. About $40 billion would be saved by slowly reducing what hospitals get to care for the uninsured, they added. The reductions would probably not begin for several years, after a significant number of people have enrolled in the new insurance programs.
For their part, hospital officials have an understanding that, if the final legislation includes a new government-sponsored insurance program, it will not pay at Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement rates, which the industry has long argued do not cover the cost of services.
Most large urban hospitals provide millions of dollars worth of free care now to indigent patients. The above article mentions about 15 billion a year of free care to patients without insurance. My guess is that not for profit hospitals already provide at least that much free/bad debt care.
WALKING BACK RAHM? A day after his chief of staff suggested the White House could live with a public option-free health care reform bill, President Obama released a statement (from Russia!) reaffirming his support for a government-run health care plan: "I am pleased by the progress we're making on health care reform and still believe, as I've said before, that one of the best ways to bring down costs, provide more choices, and assure quality is a public option that will force the insurance companies to compete and keep them honest. I look forward to a final product that achieves these very important goals." (10:15 a.m.)
Like I said, I'll wait until there's an actual BILL. Because this always happens. Someone says something that suggests there may not be a REAL public option (not just something in there they CALL a public option), then Obama comes out and "re-affirms" his support for a public option, and then we end up going through it all again in a week or so.
Just show me the bill, I don't care what anyone SAYS anymore.
PBomb
Thanks for the info. Just bookmarked it.
eclecticbrotha
The nation's health care providers already lied to us once, why should we trust them now? The Finance Committee's version of health reform is still $400 billion more than what HELP came up with and Kennedy's bill includes a public option. This is Max Baucus's bill; I'm guessing the $155 billion promised is conditional on not including a public option. Screw em.

Sarah Palin Called GOP Leaders Before Quitting Alaska Governor Called Dick Cheney, Rudy Giuliani In Weeks Before Stepping Down By JUSTIN ROOD July 6, 2009
In the weeks before Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced her resignation, she spoke privately with a range of prominent Republican officials – including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
It's not clear, from records or interviews, who may have been courting who, and none of the men have made comments suggesting Palin hinted at any future plans. But the calls underscore Palin's position among prominent Republicans.
This May, documents indicate, Palin called former Vice President Dick Cheney; former New York City mayor and GOP presidential primary contender Rudolph Giuliani; and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who is often mentioned as a GOP presidential candidate for 2012.
The governor's spokesman declined to comment on the calls. "I work for the State of Alaska," said spokesman David Murrow. "I don't coordinate or participate in her political life. I only handle official state business." He referred inquiries to Palin's political action committee, Sarah PAC. The group did not respond with comment for this story.
Racism is the reason why Sarah Palin is still on the scene.
The most disgusting thing about Sarah Palin is that she, her fans and the "conservative base" actually believe in their hearts that she, with her skimpy experience, meager education and intellect are not only equal to Obama's but SUPERIOR.
(I don't know if I can even say GOP at this point because it's clear that outside of the Joe the Plumber/Sarah Starburst segments most of the reasonable people in the GOP are horrified and repulsed by her.)
We are seeing the whole "black/brown has to be twice as good as a white to be considered halfway decent" thing live, in action.
Angelar
I absolutely agree re racism & Palin. I'm dreading her speeches and her campaigning for Republican candidates because I know her audience will be filled to the rafters with racists. And she will do her utmost to drive that wedge as far as she can. The only reason she tamped down her comments towards the end of McCain's campaign is because she wasn't at the top of the ticket and McCain stopped her. Now she has nothing to hold her back.
I heard two people yesterday who said if she isn't the party candidate she may win enough power in the party to decide who will be the candidate. I think we are looking at some very ugly times regarding her in the near future.

Police Kill Suspected Serial Murderer
GASTONIA, N.C. — A man shot and killed by police officers during a burglary here early on Monday was identified by law enforcement authorities as the suspect in a string of five shooting deaths in South Carolina over the last 10 days. Sheriff Bill Blanton of Cherokee County, S.C., where the killings took place, confirmed Monday evening that the authorities had been seeking the man killed in the burglary, Patrick T. Burris, a felon with a long record who had served seven years in prison and was paroled in April.
The police still are trying to establish a motive for the killings and any connection between the victims and the suspect. The investigation, Sheriff Blanton said, would now shift to learning more about Mr. Burris, whom he had traveled with and where he had been.
“It’s not over,” he said. “It’s just changing gears.”
The killings started June 27 with the shooting of a 63-year-old peach farmer, who was found in his home in Gaffney. Four days later, an 83-year-old woman and her 50-year-old daughter were found bound and shot inside the mother’s home. The next day, a man and his 15-year-old daughter were shot inside their family’s store about a mile from downtown Gaffney. The father was dead at the scene; his daughter died two days later.

JULY 7, 2009 White House Open to Deal on Public Health Plan
By LAURA MECKLER and JANET ADAMY WASHINGTON -- It is more important that health-care legislation inject stiff competition among insurance plans than it is for Congress to create a pure government-run option, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Monday.
"The goal is to have a means and a mechanism to keep the private insurers honest," he said in an interview. "The goal is non-negotiable; the path is" negotiable.
His comments came as the Senate Finance Committee pushed for a bipartisan deal. To help pay for the package, the committee planned to announce an agreement Wednesday with hospitals and the White House for $155 billion over a decade in reductions to Medicare and charity-care payments for hospitals, according to a person familiar with the agreement. That will help pay for the legislation, expected to cost at least $1 trillion over 10 years.
One of the most contentious issues is whether to create a public health-insurance plan to compete with private companies.
Mr. Emanuel said one of several ways to meet President Barack Obama's goals is a mechanism under which a public plan is introduced only if the marketplace fails to provide sufficient competition on its own. He noted that congressional Republicans crafted a similar trigger mechanism when they created a prescription-drug benefit for Medicare in 2003. In that case, private competition has been judged sufficient and the public option has never gone into effect.
Mr. Obama has pushed hard for a vigorous public option. But he has also said he won't draw a "line in the sand" over this point.
The deal with the hospitals follows a similar agreement with brand-name drug companies. And insurance companies were talking to Senate negotiators about cuts worth at least $100 billion over 10 years, according to two officials with knowledge of the negotiations.
Anything by the WSJ and AP I would look at with a WTF attitude. In the end we will have a public option which will be the first step towards Universal Health Care.
What is the differance between the California and the Federal Govt? California's IOUs are not public tender, while the Federal Govt. can print money and bonds and sell them to China.

When California passed prop 13 years ago that was the nail in the coffin. You cannot provide services without paying for them.California should repeal that law and change their constitution so that a minority cannot block what has to be done to fix the mess their are in.

Dylan Ratigan just asked Merideth Viera if there was going to be concessions at the Staples Center. She got a crazy look on her face and said "this is a memorial".
Fast forward 5 minutes and Merideth Viera called back into the show to say they will, indeed, have the concession stands open.
That's a damn shame. AEG is already getting the insurance money for his death, now they are getting popcorn revenue?

Ran across a great multimedia article from last winter on Melissa Harris-Lacewell on flypmedia last night I wanted to share. . .
What she had to say about community organizing was so clear and plainly stated that I decided to transcribe it:
"What community organizers do is they start with the assumption that the answers already exist among the people who have the problems. . . rather than assuming that there is a community that has a problems, issues, concerns and then there is a community of smart people who have the answers, and that the goal is to bring the smart people with the answers together with the less informed people with problems.
That’s a kind of leadership model that is missionary in its impulse in the sense that it brings answers to people with problems. What community organizers assume is that the answers already exist in the very communities that are challenged. And it says that the role of any given leader is to help the ordinary people have a path to take their answers, which they already have, and put them into practice."
It's about getting at what people already know. I think that JJP leads in this way and brings it out through humor and back and forth comments. At least that's why I come here! Anyway, the whole multimedia thingie is quite good. I thought that what MHL had to say about gender, also, was very interesting.
