I think I know why Milbank was upset, the huffingtonpost blogger didn't pay throughh the Washington post to get access.

I'll try.

The first Estate is Executive Branch of Government.
The second is the Legislative Branch.
The third is the Judiciary.
And the 4th one is the Media.

The three branches of government are kept in line to keep one branch from being more powerful than the other two - it's called Checks and Balances.

The Media was supposed to keep the three branches of government HONEST and Accountable to the American People by reporting what the hell is actually going on, in total, objective fashion.

The possibility of a 5th Estate is the one where the Neo-Cons, Separatists and those groups engaging in sedition (rebellion against the American Government) hasn't occurred yet, but it didn't mean that there haven't been attempts.

Helen Thomas has nothing to gain by stating what she has stated. Not to mention the 'lying with dogs' of the media over the past 8 years, so Helen probably has a good eye for “orchestration.” As much as I'm behind this president, it IS Mr. Gibbs' job to spin and I have no doubt he does.

I know the WH is more accessible and transparent than previous administrations, but I also know Helen Thomas is saying the press conferences are orchestrated.

Yes, all administrations, 'manage' the press and public coverage/exposure'

I like Helen Thomas and I want to know why she is raising this issue, because she was dead on when she persistently asked "why did we go to Iraq'?

Rikyrah, the Washington Post quit being a real newspaper when Ben Bradlee stepped down as Editor in Chief, and the original owner sold it to whatever conglommorate that owns it now.

They haven't been a real newspaper since Chris Matthews stopped being a real Democrat, and that was during the Carter Administration.

The enemy was created by the 4th Estate and when news icons in the fashion of Brinkley and Cronkite got flushed down the river in favor of entertainment as opposed to news.

Cronkite single handledly exposed the sham that was Vietnam. Even Lyndon Johnson said that if he's lost Cronkite, he lost the whole effing war as well as American support for it. It was the main reason Johnson didn't run for re-election.

We agree to disagree while I continue to line my balcony with the Washington Post so the squirrels will have something to shyt on as they go about their business.

During the Bush regime, the Washington Post aka the Potomac Pravda would pimp the administration policies in exchange for access and they continued the same practice with the current administration. But with the squeeze on the news paper business, they came up with the pay to play scheme. Unfortunately for the WaPimp, a lobbyist didn't like the racketeering and leaked the flier to Politico. Ahhhh, the irony! And these hypocrites would seat in judgment and write editorials about Rod Blagojevich lack of ethics! It’s the pot calling the kettle black. How pathetic!

I disagree. I don;t think people want real news. Investigative stuff. Verfied facts. Breaking stories. Revelation. Analysis. Digging. People WANT entertainment. Scandal. Gossip. Opinions multiplied into screeds. That's why the Post is tripping, scraping the bottom of the barrell. That's why blogs have taken off: all opinion/partisanship, hornet nest stirring, get folk riled or entertained. The average American has been infantilized. So who'd read a real newspaper, or a hard news site? Even the AP is cutting staff–so how do you explain that?

We have met the enemy, and it is us. So dont be so hard on the Post.
