Sounds like Professor Gates has been waiting his whole life to be “oppressed” by a white guy in a uniform.
Yes, I would be annoyed if the cops pressed the issue once we'd established that it was my house. But the police officers were following procedure – and if I were them, I would have taken him outside, too; I would want as many witnesses as possible if the person I was talking to was getting that worked up. And lets face it…cops deal with a lot of stupid stuff every day. Getting yelled at for doing the right thing would probably make me want to slap the cuffs on someone, too.
I really think this could have been settled easier by both parties thusly: Gates: Hrm…This could get ugly “It's my house. Here's the proof. Thanks for looking out for the neighborhood. Bye.”
Police: Hrm…This could get ugly “Sorry for the inconvenience. Have a good day. Bye.”
Was the lady who called 911 racist? Sure doesn't sound like it. But, hey, I guess some people want their 15 minutes of fame. Some people see racism where it may not exist. Some people want to be a victim. Hopefully after a few beers at the White House with the President, everyone can grow up. Nobody needs to get paid anything.

I'll concede that but being irritated and arresting Gates doesn't mean he is racist either. The cop could have easily dismissed Gates as been over sensitive old man and kept it moving.

I maintain, although the officer may have been “irritated”, he too had a choice. His choice made this incident a national news story.

Now we are getting somewhere. As much as Gates was talking Shit I don't think you can arrest someone for simply having an attitude. And that's why they dropped the charges. The cop was irritated with Gates because he was accusing of racism for simply doing his job. Gates was irritated with cop because he just got of a long trip, the door was stuck and he “felt” like he was harassed because of his color which is understandable but nonsense. Like I said in previous posts the person that Gates should be pissed off with is his neighbor that called the cops.

I would imagine, in most instances, the robber wouldn't answer the front door. Although, Gates may have been disgruntled he presented driver's lic. and Harvard ID to officer. The inquiry should have ended.

It's definitely NOT racial profiling. If you are a cop and you receive a call about a black male breaking into a house and it is a white neighborhood, black, hispanic, asian whatever. And you arrive at the address and there is a black male there and you question the person. THAT IS NOT RACISM.

Racial profiling is when cops pull over people because they are black without any suspicion or when TSA stops the guy with the Turban because he looks like a terrorist.

I do think it was non-incident but why was he acting jiggy when the police officer was asking him for his id. All the “Yo momma” sambo jive talk. He thought the cop was going to take his $hit. And some of the morons on this board act like being defiant proves something. I'm mean look at the title of this thread, “Professor Gates…Gangsta” WTF, is “Gangsta” about that and if it was “Gangsta” is that something to celebrate? But all Gates did was get his ass locked up and make a mockery out of racial profiling. People like Gates who “have made it” have a typical upper class mentality. He was thinking how dare this cop ask me for my id.

I would define the Gates saga as an instance of racial profiling. The incident is comparable to stories that surface from time to time, across the country, which describe tales of the heighten attention POC receives when they are perceived to be in the wrong neighborhood.

The officer had a choice, he choose to turn a non-incident into an incident when he arrested Gates.

This is the point that you are missing. Gates wasn't racially profiled. It wasn't like Gates was simply walking down Mayberry st the cops stopped him to harass him. The received a call about a break in a specific address and he fit the description. What's the problem? Show your id. Cooperate with the police. And have a nice day. He just thought the cop was going to let him talk slick because he works at HAAAAAARVARD. The point is he was making a scene just to make one. The cop went to his doing his job and Gates is going to call him a racist. Wtf, is so racist about that?

The point I was making that as blacks we constantly display negative stereotypes and when other groups feed into the stereotypes we call it racism.
