City Hall News Editor, Edward-Isaac Dovere's piece on NY Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney features a conversation during which she used the N word while slamming Kirsten Gillibrand, the woman who replaced Hillary Clinton in the New York Senate. For more of Dovere's piece keeping reading here.
There is Carolyn Maloney, ripping into Kirsten Gillibrand broad and hard for voting against the two stimulus bills and for changing her positions on several core Democratic issues, sounding out her case on the fly as, "It's the NRA, it's immigration, it's all these other things. In fact, I got a call from someone from Puerto Rico, said [Gillibrand] went to Puerto Rico and came out for English-only [education]. And he said, 'It was like saying n--r to a Puerto Rican,'" she said, using the full racial slur. "I don't know--I don't know if that's true or not. I just called. I'm just throwing that out. All of her--well, what does she stand for?"
UPDate: Carolyn Maloney Slams Kirsten Gillibrand, Uses N Word Quote To Illustrate Point
Representative Maloney has apologized for using a quote with the N word:
"I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting," Maloney said in a statement.
"It's no excuse but I was so caught up in relaying the story exactly as it was told to me that, in doing so, I repeated a word that should never be repeated," she said.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. Arrested At Cambridge Home
BOSTON — Black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. is accusing a Massachusetts police department of racism after being arrested while trying to get into his locked home near Harvard University.
Police say they were called to the home Thursday afternoon after a woman reported seeing a man try to pry open the front door.
They say that they ordered the man to identify himself and that Gates refused. According to a police report, Gates then called the officer a racist and said, "This is what happens to black men in America."
Police declined to comment Monday. Gates referred comment to his lawyer, fellow Harvard scholar Charles Ogletree, who did not immediately return a call.
Gates is the director of Harvard's W.E.B. Du Bois (doo-BOYS') Institute for African and African American Research.
whiterosebuddy
See. This is why when you are black you do not open the door to the police. If they do not have a warrant, you do not have to talk to them nor allow them in your home.
That is where Gates went wrong. He knew he had broken no laws and therefore should have never, ever, ever, opened the door. He is lucky he is still alive.
Miranda
Actually, the cops can enter if they have "a reasonable belief" that a crime is being committed - which is a bullshit tactic that's used all the time. A friend that's an ex-cop told me that lil tidbit a while ago.
whiterosebuddy
Gates could have held his ID up to the window pane..and kept steppin. He was under no obligation to talk to them nor give the officer access.
The officer would have had to force entry like you say on 'a reasonable belief'
We all know that Gates was livid. He is just another angry OLD black male...like chris Rock says, show me an old black man and I will show you an angry man.
The indignities of years just piles up. It is difficult not to spew that vitriol right back at them when you know you have broken no laws.
Skip verbally berated that officer so bad, the officer was so demeaned that he arrested him.
Skip should of known it was a trap when the officer kept telling him to step outside b4 he would tell Skip his name. Nope.
Stay inside and keep the door shut. Just look at em.
Miranda
Stay inside and keep the door shut. Just look at em.
ROFLMAO!!! I know what you mean, but its just funny the way you put it...just look at their dumb azzes..LOL
You all have got to read the police report. This officer was straight ego trippin'. He admitted Gates showed him ID to prove he lived there, so that should've been the end of it. Instead, 5-0 calls Harvard U. police. For what? IF Gates was yelling at him, so what? He wasn't a threat to the officer, who was outside Gates' residence. It wasn't like Gates bumrushed him. Oh, that's right! Gates was calling him out in front of the other white folks! We can't have that now, can we!

They need to look into why this dude was arrested inside his own home after producing the proper identification. The cops are saying he was arrested because he got loud and belligerent and would not produce ID.
Gates is claiming he was inside the house, peoduced ID and was still arrested.

Does it look to anyone else like the WH is no longer gonna sit back and let the GOP throw bombs. Looks like they are gonna fight back. Between the Arizona GOP trying to beat up the stimulus and the WH bascially telling Arizona if you don't want the money, then we'll gladly give it elsewhere, but here's what you'll be giving up...
To Obama being more upfront on Health Care.
To the Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack setting Drudge straight after Drudge leads with a list of millions of dollars in food items included in the stimulus http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0709/Vil...
To just today, when Obama responded to DeMint's "waterloo" comment on Healthcare. Obama to DeMint: ("Waterloo") "Think about that. This isn't about me. This isn't about politics. This is about a health care system that is breaking American families."
I think that the earlier calls for Bi-partinship that led to GOP being "party of no" has given the WH wiggle room to respond to attacks without yet being accused of partisan bickering.

Brian Kilmeade Apologizes For Racist "Pure Species" Comment
Brian Kilmeade apologized Monday for controversial comments he made on the July 8 episode of "Fox and Friends."
The controversy arose when Kilmeade and his co-hosts were discussing a Swedish and Finnish study which found that married people were less susceptible to Alzheimer's disease than unmarried ones. Kilmeade downplayed the study's significance in America, saying "we [Americans] keep marrying other species and other ethnicities . . . Swedes have pure genes . . . in America we marry everybody..."
The comment prompted an outcry for an apology, including a petition from UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc., which said that Kilmeade's statement was based on "the basest of white supremacist ideologies".
Kilmeade apologized this morning, saying "I made comments that were offensive to many people. That was not my intention, and looking back at those comments I realize they were inappropriate. For that I sincerely apologize. America [is a] huge melting pot, and that is what makes us such a great country..."

Although his apology might be better worded than similar racists, it's nonetheless part of the same old song and dance at FOX. Bailout Overseer Says Banks Misused TARP Funds *****NO SHIT SHERLOCK!
By Binyamin Appelbaum Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, July 20, 2009
Many of the banks that got federal aid to support increased lending have instead used some of the money to make investments, repay debts or buy other banks, according to a new report from the special inspector general overseeing the government's financial rescue program. The report, which will be published Monday, surveyed 360 banks that got money through the end of January and found that 110 had invested at least some of it, that 52 had repaid debts and that 15 had used funds to buy other banks. Roughly 80 percent of respondents, or 300 banks, also said at least some of the money had supported new lending. The report by special inspector general Neil Barofsky calls on the Treasury Department to require regular, more detailed information from banks about their use of federal aid provided under the Troubled Asset Relief Program. The Treasury has refused to collect such information.

As Media Grow, FCC Looks Ahead Agency's New Chief Is a Product of the Information Age
By Cecilia Kang Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, July 20, 2009
Julius Genachowski, President Obama's pick to lead the Federal Communications Commission, has a soft spot for the little guy. In his first interview since taking over the federal agency, Genachowski talked about the importance of "edge" Internet and software companies in pushing forward technological advances. He suggested that these companies might play a key role in boosting the economy and in helping the agency meet its mandate to bring high-speed Internet access to all Americans.
"That's where the greatest innovation is," he said. "What is interesting to me is to find ways to work with early-stage innovators to build from the edge and work on tomorrow's ideas." The 46-year-old former venture capitalist offered few specifics on how he would bring those entrepreneurs into an agency that is still grappling with arcane policies on sharing telephone wires and the distribution of radio broadcast licenses. And he did not weigh in on some of the most vexing issues confronting the FCC, including complaints about exclusive wireless partnerships such as the one AT&T and Apple forged with the iPhone. But he touted the role of high-tech and telecom startups and smaller competitors in creating jobs as the administration pushes to bring broadband access to the nation.

The blowback from ADHD drugs is reported in the current July 2009 Scientific American Mind article "Do ADHD Drugs Take a Toll on the Brain?" a comprehensive report of the long-term dangers of ADHD drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and Vyvanse. (Gateway drugs or kiddie cocaine)
For decades, the majority of American doctors, mental health professionals, the media, and the general public have yielded to the disseminations of Harvard psychiatrist Joseph Biedeman who successfully evangelized for more children -- and younger children -- to be medicated with powerful psychiatric drugs.
<snip>
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated in 2005 that 9% of boys and 4% of girls in the U.S. were taking ADHD stimulant medications; and according to a 2007 study, ADHD-drug prescriptions rose by almost 12 percent a year between 2000 and 2005.
ADHD drugs are either the "amphetamine-like" methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin and Concerta) or actual amphetamines (e.g., Adderall and Vyvanse), so it should not be surprising that long-term use is associated with many hazards. The current Scientific American Mind piece, authored by Edmund S. Higgins, clinical associate professor of family medicine and psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina states, "Methylphenidate has a chemical structure similar to that of cocaine and acts on the brain in a very similar way." In February 2009, neuroscientists at the Rockefeller University reported cocaine-like structural and chemical alterations in the brains of mice given methylphenidate.
Guess which group's kids are the targets of these gateway drugs? Remember when school districts would threaten expulsion of a child from school if their parents resist giving them these drugs?
It is not just the doctors who benefit from the distribution of ADHD drugs. On more than one occasion, it has been pointed out, that school districts with children taking ADHD drugs receive more federal funds for special education. Other parents of school children have been enticed by receiving monthly checks if their kids take drugs like Ritian.

The recent fixation with Hillary Cinton’s place in the Obama administration strikes me as overblown, more a function of her ability to drive ratings and web traffic than any real political tensions. Clinton sees Obama regularly and she enjoys a strong link to the White House’s national security team. (Clinton’s deputy, Jim Steinberg, works extremely closely and collegially with the current deputy national security advisor, Tom Donilon, a former colleague from the Bill Clinton years.)
Take, for instance, the data points in today's New York Times story presented in support of the notion that Hillary may have been "shunted to the sidelines": Middle East hand Dennis Ross has moved from Foggy Bottom to the NSC? That has nothing to do with Clinton but rather is about Obama's White House staffing needs. Her failed effort to hire Sidney Blumenthal? A weird idea on her part, to be sure, but pretty minor in the scheme of things. Her candidate to lead USAID is caught up in a vetting process--but that's a story about the madness of confirmation politics, not internecine administration feuds. She hasn't been allowed to fill every ambassadorship at will, which would have been an extraodinary sacrifice of one of the most time-honored (if semi-corrupt) forms of presidential patronage. And then there is her broken arm, unfortunate fodder for metaphor-hungry writers, but almost not worth discussing otherwise.
Thought this would be interesting since JJPers discuss this yesterday.

President Is Set to 'Take the Baton' As Skepticism on Health Reform Mounts, He Will Intensify His Efforts
By Michael D. Shear and Shailagh Murray Washington Post Staff Writers Monday, July 20, 2009
Six months into his presidency, Barack Obama may have no greater test of his ability to translate personal popularity into a successful legislative agenda than the upcoming two weeks.
With skepticism about the president's health-care reform effort mounting on Capitol Hill -- even within his own party -- the White House has launched a new phase of its strategy designed to dramatically increase public pressure on Congress: all Obama, all the time.
Senior White House aides promise "an aggressive public and private schedule" for Obama as he presses his case for reform, including a prime-time news conference on Wednesday, a trip to Cleveland, and heavy use of Internet video to broadcast his message beyond the reach of the traditional media.
"Our strategy has been to allow this process to advance to the point where it made sense for the president to take the baton. Now's that time," said senior adviser David Axelrod. "I don't know whether he will Twitter or tweet. But he's going to be very, very visible."
Another senior White House aide added: "It's time to raise the stakes on this."
But even as Obama returns to full-time campaign mode, he is facing increasing calls to show that his presidency can manage the tough, nitty-gritty of lawmaking by cutting deals with his allies to keep his health-care legislation moving in the House and Senate committees.
Conservative Democrats in the House are promising to vote against reform as it now stands, and are preparing two dozen amendments, including measures aimed at lowering the effort's long-term cost. In the Senate, members from both parties are urging the president to break his campaign promise to preserve the tax-free status of health benefits. And a chorus of weary voices from Capitol Hill is urging him to abandon his demand for passage of bills in the House and Senate by Aug. 7.
"I don't think we should be bound by a timetable that isn't realistic," Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), a key swing-vote on health care, told Obama last week as she reminded him that President Lyndon B. Johnson took 1 1/2 years to pass Medicare.
The feds will have to add on a 15% tax on top earners to pay for their program or else find another way to raise the money such as VAT tax, tax on middle income earners, or some other source to fully fund the program.
One of the issues we have discussed before is the nature of governing. President Obama really put himself into a box when he came out in said we can't govern in anger in regard to the bonuses paid to AIG employees. There has to be a recognition that sometimes you need to be more aggressive and channel that anger. Putting on people whom are sick, have insurance and are denied by a bureaucrat from every congressional district is another way of putting heat on Democrats against public option.
Lisa M
That is hardcore!!

Given the fact there are at least 11 Democrats in the house and a couple of Senators unwilling to be team players I'd get rid of some players. All the talk of economic recovery is designed to force consumers back into the habit of consuming and not saving. The increased rate of savings you hear/see/ in the media is a reflection of the fact we are paying down debt and not buying anything unless we have to. For those whom have the income to save the choice is simple interest bearing instruments that avoid the price swings of stocks(the fear instilled by this last collapse is not going out of anyones pysche for a substantial period of time). Without a change in our habits the recovery is likely to be slow. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/...
RonnieB
It's business as usual. Whether it's auto sales (Detroit still demands $40,000 for a nice Dodge station wagon); credit card issuers clog up our mailboxes (and we still take the offers); developers still build strip malls, knowing that their vacancy rates will be 90% for years. And the consumer still goes along with all of this, as if it's our sworn duty to do so.
Big businesses are still too big to fail; small businesses are still too small to succeed. Some fkcing recovery.
RobM
Seriously, where do you live that you receive credit card offers and have banks lending to developers to build strip malls. I can believe you have a good credit score explaining the offers but you have banks that will lend for strip malls? Come to Pennsylvania or the Inland Empire of California. They have banks that will sell them to you already finished. You just have to move them.
AM2k9
Not fooling me. Credit Cards have been cut off and soon as they are paid off....this one here, will never use a credit card in his life. F 'em.
mon_dieu_ishmael
It is ironic that the American consumer has been condemned for not saving enough money. Now when they do, its bad for the economy. Our recent CD rates - 1.9% to 2.2% (yech). They were 4% to 4.5%.
RobM
It's the way the savings rate is measured that is the problem. We really aren't saving anything. The reduction of debt is seen as savings. We are still in debt. Excluding mortgages, credit card debt is still at sky high levels. We chose to borrow because our incomes weren't going up. The borrowing propelled the economy. That is why you hear/see that saving is bad for the economy.
morphus
A consumer based society thrives in part from consumer confidence. If banks are not lending to banks, meaning banks do not have confidence in each other, why should the consumer be any different?
RobM
There is nothing wrong w/ consuming if you can pay for it. If all your consumption comes from borrowing to pay for it consumption stops when you can't pay for your debt. Banks/financial institutions do not have confidence because they overlent and have few ways of getting that money back because people can't pay.
morphus
Why aren't banks lending to banks? Is it because of the zombie banks?
RobM
While many banks are at least stable they are crippled by their lack of capital. The capital they have can not be lent out because they require it to meet margin requirments against bad/deliquent loans. That is one reason all your charges w/ a financial institution have gone up. They have to make money somewhere. What we all need is for incomes to go up.

Federal prosecutors have charged disgraced international investor Bernard Madoff's accountant David Friehling with information and securities fraud, and other offenses this week.
If convicted on all counts, Friehling could serve up to 105 years in prison, according to an FBI statement.
Prosecutors say from 1991 through 2008, Friehling falsely certified that he prepared and audited financial statements for Madoff's company. Prosecutors also say Friehling "failed to maintain the requisite professional independence from his audit client."
According to the FBI statement, Friehling and his wife had an account with madoff's company with a balance of more than $500,000.
The FBI charged Friehling, 49, with one count of securities fraud, one count of abetting investment adviser fraud and four counts of filing audit reports with the Securities Exchange Commission. He was arrested in March.
Bernie Madoff, convicted of operating a $65 billion Ponzi scheme is serving a 150-year prison sentence. Now, his accountant will likely serve 105 years.
Yet, there are no arrests for the largest hate crime scandal of the century, "ghetto loans" or as it is known in some circles, subprime loans.
It took the Congress 2 1/2 centuries to apologize for slavery, how long will it take to address the greatest wealth transfer of a single group in history?

Assertions that "sex sells" in women's sports aren't just tired--they're dead wrong. At Wimbledon, officials blithely admitted that for women players, "physical attractiveness is taken into consideration" when it comes to court assignments. That's why easy-on-the-eye unknowns have appeared in Wimbledon's prime arena, the top women's seeds (aka Venus and Serena) have been relegated to lesser courts
Amid the drama of watching two of the finest athletes of their era clash, the specter of sexism haunted the All England Club. Early in the tournament, officials blithely admitted that for women players, "physical attractiveness is taken into consideration" when it comes to court assignments. As the Daily Mail explained, "While a succession of easy-on-the-eye unknowns have appeared in Wimbledon's prime arena, the top women's seeds have been relegated to lesser courts."
Several players, including some of these "easy-on-the-eye unknowns" were upset with the setup. But much of the media dismissed the story as unimportant.
L.Z. Granderson, a normally sane voice in the ESPN archipelago, wrote a column in which he stated simply, "I don't see the harm." After conceding the obvious--that the policy is sexist--Granderson played devil's advocate: "I actually find the Wimbledon officials' honesty quite refreshing...last I checked, gender equity in the workplace wasn't a beer on tap at the Kit Kat Club. Sometimes, people like what they like, and accepting that also requires a certain degree of tolerance."
I see, black women still fail to be a model of beauty or even "easy on the eye". And, we are not actually at Wimbledon to see great tennis players.

If it wasn't for Venus and Serena, the ratings for Wimbledon would be lower than a book reading on cspan 2.
spirit_55z
Hilarious, but TRUE.
morphus
Agreed. This article explains my personal questions when following tennis in general.

"While a succession of easy-on-the-eye unknowns have appeared in Wimbledon's prime arena, the top women's seeds have been relegated to lesser courts."
Like Venus and Serena are wombats or something... WTF?? I know many a man (black, white, PR) who would get with either of them, with a quickness!!! Not that that has a damn thing to do with tennis...
People who like competitive sports like winners!!! To relegate Venus and Serena to anywhere other than center court is sexist and racist. They are winners, champions(!), in fact. PERIOD.
hey DJ - I am having a last days of summer barbecue in August and need some music. Is it possible for you to create a remix of some jams that are available for me to download via mp3? I can pay you via paypal. If you are interested please provide an email so we can connect.

Val,
I want to apologize for last night. I was doing the same thing I accused Brownman of doing.
Val
It's all good malletgirl02 - sometimes we just get passionate about an issue. I understand that and that is why I LOVE JJP.
Appreciate your note though but wasn't necessary. :-)
