Reproduction is not the only cultural consideration. Bonding occurs between gays..and lineage is carried by adopted offspring. How else do you think heterosexuals who can't reproduce survive in society?

Cannibalism was condoned by the societies that practiced it.

Now, you will have to do selective spitting on graves...separating the gay graves from the straight ones.

I'm neither African American nor gay “first.” I'm both of those things at the same damn time, and I'm sick and damn tired of people either black folk or the pitiful so-called “leaders” of the alleged “gay community” (who are usually white middle class men) acting and writing as though they have some sort of bragging rights to oppression. And if Granderson is reacting to some slogan that says “gay is the new black” (something I've never heard, but whatevs), I'd've liked for him to try and trace where that slogan came from and what's going on with all that. As it is, his piece read like a dashed-off missive that's long on righteous indignation and short on sustained critical thought.

First off, it's only the white gay community who seems to be speaking out. The white gays and lesbians can't speak for the black gays and lesbians. So if they wanna complain about Obama's slowness dealing with LGBT issues, they need to say they're just speaking for the white gay community. Now, do I know how black gays and lesbians feel? Only what I just read. And if what I read is the case, that black gays and lesbians are not in the uproar that white gays and lesbians are in, that's a point that needs to be made.

And let's be perfectly clear. The white LGBT community hasn't of late been looking to the black community as a mentor. They've just used our history to batter us for not running to their defense, like voting for Cali's prop 8 when the outreach that had been done in the white community hadn't been done in the black community. I'll have more respect for the white LGBT community when they stop acting self-righteous. They're not looking at the success of the CRM and saying, "We can do that, too!" They taking it like a baseball bat and saying, "Darkie, you better get in line."

And I personally can't think of a reason not to support gay marriage, so I'm usually on board until the white LGBT community starts acting pissy because the black community at large isn't dancing to their drum beat.

Cause let's not play dumb. There's a difference between not having your relationship legally recognized and being threatened with death and lynching and violence. Unless you were a black woman white men wanted to be with (rape), but that's a different story.

I don't know any African CULTURE that sanctions homosexuality as a means to reproduce,carry lineage,or bond a society.Sure there were some gays just like there probably were some cannibals that does not mean it was condoned.

First, we're not that powerful or influential. If we were, DADT and DOMA wouldn't exist, but that's beside the point.

Second, what exactly is the point with your comment (or LZ Granderson's article)? Blacks have it worse than gays, so we gays should shut up about our discrimination? Let's say I concede the point on who had and has it worse (I don't; I think it depends on where you live and how you define 'worse'), does that somehow mean the institutional discrimination faced by gays somehow doesn't matter or shouldn't be fought against?

Third, how is it a spit in the face for one marginalized community (the LGBT) to look to another (the Black community), as a role model for how to achieve successes in the fight against bigotry? The legal and social issues facing LGBT Americans are very similar to the issues that the African American community has been facing for generations. Of course we're going to look to your successes as both inspiration and as a model for how to move forward.

I agree with you wrb. I also feel that I am African-American 1st. I get how they feel about the white LGT movement like I feel about white feminism-unenthused. Yet, they will benefit from the national progress (moreso than we benefit from white feminism) so I'm for it.

I totally get where this author is coming from as far as the obvious. Truth is, gay or not, segregation and racism still exists. However, the “gay is the new black” mantra or concept is only applicable to the equality issue of the LGBT community as it relates to marriage.
