Because the President did the politically expedient thing, rather than the RIGHT thing.

I am disgusted by it, too. This cop abused his power. He's not too bright, and violated the law when he entered the house without permission, or a warrant. Maybe the trumped up "disorderly conduct" was a way of covering up that error. He had to smear Gates to cover up his mistake. He didn't want to come crawling out of Gates' house looking like a punk in front of his cop buddies...and admit this was the homeowner, and he screwed up.

Now, he gets to have beer at the white house.

Amen. As soon as I heard the calls for the apology I thought why does this always happen??? I remember being told I had better apologize to someone (for something I did not do) or I would lose my job. I refused and I did not lose my job. PBO, next time don't blink.

I agree with BlackWomanRising. It does make the President look like he was punked. He is a nice man though and sometimes he is a little too nice. Especially now that some fool is trying to introduce a bill to “make” him apologize. What bs. Of all of the horrible things American Presidents have done, sometimes for “good” reasons, sometimes for bad or murky reasons of even things they've done with good intentions that turned out to be bad, I don't think a bill has ever been introduced to make a President apologize, especially for somethng he said about a private citizen or an event. And with all we have going on that Congress needs to work on and this fool, whose name escapes me, is pulling this stunt. How some of these idiots get elected to Congress is beyond me entirely. I hate to think about how backward their home districts are. Sheesh!

Now that it has come to light that Crowley straight up lied in the police report, why does that FOOL stilllll get the reward of meeting with the president? I was so proud of President Obama when he defended Gates and initially refused to back down from his original statements. I was even cool with the non-apology apology because politically, it had to be done to put the attention back on health care. But this beer BS, like others have said this, makes him look at best, WEAK, and at worst, like he got played by this trifling cop (which he did). At first I didn't agree with those sentiments, but now I unfortunately agree. The more I think about it the more disgusted I get. If succeeding in politics requires stroking white folks ego and apologizing for the truth, all the way down to the local level, every damn minute of every damn day then count me out! Ugh.
