For those of you who have not gone into Cronkite Watch, I have an important question!
Has anybody seen my baby? Has he been Americanized? Sodomized?
A young Somali man captured by the US during the rescue of an American sea captain from pirates has been indicted in New York on multiple piracy charges.
Abde Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse faces 10 counts including piracy, holding a hostage for ransom and armed hijacking.
Let me know how he's doing if anyone has heard anything more about him.
This is what is going on in America's healthcare industry. This is why movies like Sicko scare them. This is why they're fighting fang and claw to stop the Public Option, and kill it in the cradle. This is why they're fighting against reform as if their way of life depends on it - because it does.
Make no mistake - this is us, the American public, versus corporate greed. We need to be louder and stronger-willed than those who profit while others suffer.

I've worked in the insurance industry for years, life & health, annuities, credit - all in regulatory compliance - and I can assure you that insurers are out to screw you....screw you royally. Insurance is a big ass hustle. The goal for every insurance company is the same - to take your premiums and not pay shit.

Walter Cronkite was never one to suck up the lime light.
If MSM can devote days of memorial tributes to Tim Russert....
I wonder if CBS will give him a fitting send off. I hope so, because Mr. Cronkite deserves a national TV memorial service.
Our family grew up listening to Walter Cronkite on the radio and then TV.
A true jounalist to the end.
moja31
oh he'll get his week long wall to wall memorializing, and he's probably more deserving of that treatment than most who get it. it's sad to lose a real journalist like him, in a country that already has far too few.
i won't hold my breath waiting for certain folks to feign indignation over how the news has come to a standstill on this one though...

Democracy Now- Howard Dean (2\5) on Real Healthcare Reform
Howard Dean on His Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform
"The House Ways and Means Committee approved legislation early this morning to overhaul the nations healthcare system and expand insurance coverage. By a 23-to-18 vote, the committee backed key elements of President Obamas blueprint for healthcare, including the creation of a new government health plan and requirements for employers to offer health insurance to workers or contribute to its cost. To help fund the changes to the healthcare system, the House committee also agreed to impose a surtax on families with incomes of more than $350,000 a year. Meanwhile, the conservative American Medical Association has just come out in support of the House bill, saying the status quo is unacceptable. Today we spend the hour with Howard Dean, physician, six-term Vermont governor, Democratic presidential candidate in 2004, and former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Deans solution embraces President Obamas healthcare plan but argues that the reform bill is not worth passing unless the American people have the choice of signing up for a public option—a real public option."
This is part 2. Part 1 is part news and about Sotomayer's hearing.
CNN/WAPO's Howard Kurtz tweets: "Olympia Snowe, Richard Lugar say they will vote for Sotomayor. Plus Mel Martinez (duh). Wonder how many other Repubs will take the plunge."
GOP Rep Tiahrt (KS) Asks Whether Obama's Mother Would Have Had An Abortion By Nicole Belle Friday Jul 17, 2009 3:00pm -
Yet another gem from the "Party of Family Values":
Arguing to restrict the public funding of abortions within the District of Columbia, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kans.) suggested on Thursday afternoon that if such "financial incentives" were available some 47 years ago, President Barack Obama himself may never have been born. "If you think of it in human terms, there is a financial incentive that will be put in place, paid for by tax dollars, that will encourage women who are -- single parents, living below the poverty level, to have the opportunity for a free abortion," said Tiahrt. "If you take that scenario and apply it to many of the great minds we have today, who would we have been deprived of? Our president grew up in a similar circumstance." "If that financial incentive was in place, is it possible that his mother may have taken advantage of it?" Tiahrt asked. "Clarence Thomas, Supreme Court Justice, if those circumstances were in place, is it possible that we would be denied his great mind? The opportunity to have tax-funded abortions, a financial incentive, is something that I think most of us want to oppose in America and it's certainly deserves a clean up or down vote." So is Tiahrt suggesting that only black babies get aborted? Has Tiahrt been spending time with Bill Bennett? It's a little horrifying to me that more than 45 years after MLK's March on Washington, the GOP still feels no shame in expressing their abject racism so openly. It is a small comfort that Tiahrt was booed by his colleagues.
Tiahrt is running for Sam Brownback's Senate seat in 2010, and given the tenor of his comments, I'd say he's attempting to reach out to the same base. However, such sickening allusions--can you imagine the GOP uproar if a Congressman had suggested that Barbara Bush might have wanted to consider an abortion?--should not go unchallenged. The Kansas Democratic Party has put together a petition demanding an apology from Tiahrt: Take it back, Todd.

I wanna know more about this C street complex for the good Christian congressmen...I think I saw a horror movie about something eerily similar to this a long time ago.

No sign explains the prim and proper red brick house on C Street SE. Nothing hints at its secrets. It blends into the streetscape, tucked behind the Library of Congress, a few steps from the Cannon House Office Building, a few more steps to the Capitol. This is just the way its residents want it to be. Almost invisible. Full Story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar...

I heard someone on the news today that residents of DC now drive by their visitors and describe it as the "house of prayer."
I guess that what those people do within those walls do need a hell of alot of praying!
If you recall going back to the primary, Hillary went on the attack about Obama's church...well...I said at the time, Hillary's choice of religious practicing had to be questioned also. There wasn't any traction at that at the time.....guess, Hillary might want to rethink who she prays with going forward. Especially since I truly believe she plans to go for the presidency one last time.

thanks for trying to help me. I appreciate it.

He was in NJ campaigning for Corizine...it was supposed to be at Rutgers but they had to move it to a bigger site.
See this is the kind of stuff that pisses me off. WHITE PEOPLE TAKE NOTE OF THIS. David Arquette was on Fox and said a pretty stupid joke about Latinas- perpetuating a stereotype etc. Now he issues a an apology. He went for the laugh and got it and now all he says is that he didn't MEAN to offend anyone. No harm, no foul.
THIS PISSES ME OFF. Racism is NOT DEPENDENT on the person's INTENTION to be racist when sharing a racist joke, promoting a stereotype, or using a racist term.
In other words, no matter what your intention is: if you do or say something racist then you are a RACIST. This is not say that you are a member of the Kl Klux Klan. This is not say that you intend to hurt other people or intend to treat them as lower than you. However, when you do and say what you and say the cumulative effect is a subordinate social position of people of color. When you do that you AFFIRM racism. You perpetuate it. You promote it.
An apology like "my bad, didn't mean it" is NOT ENOUGH. You HAVE TO SAY "DAMN I SAID SOMETHING RACIST AND IT WAS WRONG, AND I AIN'T NEVER GONNA SAY IT AGAIN BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO NOT BE RACIST." When you pick on people (say jokes, promote stereotypes) and you KNOW it's wrong that means you value the laugh over the people. THOSE are your values, not valuing diversity or valuing people.
So before that California Gary Frago comes up with his apology saying "my bad... some of my best friend's are black," let me say NOT ENOUGH, YOU RACIST.
Angelar

Not all the attendees of the NAACP's national conference, held at the Hilton Hotel in midtown this week, got into the third floor ballroom to hear President Barack Obama's highly anticipated speech last night.
By the northeast entrance of the Hilton's lobby, across from a sign directing participants of the Korea Global Healthcare Conference to the hotel's second floor, a crowd gathered in front of a flat screen television sponsored by AT&T and promoting NAACP Webcast.com ("Text, Call or Tweet Your Friends").
They watched attentively as the panning camera focused on the back of the Rev. Al Sharpton's graying, anvil-headed hair as he ate dinner. The crowd demonstrated considerably more animation a few minutes later, when the screen showed Beyoncé Knowles singing "Halo," though their excitement ended abruptly when the camera again showed the guests in the ballroom quietly eating, as it turned out Knowles' performance was stock footage from February's NAACP Image Awards. Then they watched an NAACP official at the podium asking all the trustees to meet him outside in the hall.
"It must mean he's ready to come in," said one member of the crowd.
As the camera lingered on police commissioner Ray Kelly chatting at table 44, Wildon Richardson, a self-employed man of 50 who held a copy of the Amsterdam News ("Hero Shot in Cross Fire") and wore a pin of Michael Jackson (in red military jacket with epaulettes) on his right shoulder and one of Michael Jackson (in "Smooth Criminal" gangster hat and jacket) on his left shoulder, started talking with an older man wearing a FUBU baseball cap.
"Christopher Columbus discovered America? How can you discover a place that is already inhabited?" said Richardson.
"You know about Halifax, Nova Scotia," said the man in the FUBU cap. "They got a black culture seminar up there man that will blow your mind."
All of a sudden, young women started squealing and running past the Hilton's Bridges Bar on the hotel's 54th Street side to a side entrance.
"Is it the president?" one woman asked one of the Bridges Bar's waiters.
"That wasn't the president. That was Puff Daddy," the waiter, a middle-aged Asian man, said, as the girls and some more mature women screamed, "Puff Daddy just passed me by!" and "P-Diddy, that's P-Diddy!"
On the large screen television fixed to the wall of Bridges Bar, people watched the entertainer, dressed in a tuxedo, as he made the rounds inside the ballroom two floors above them, shaking hands with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and posing for cell phone pictures.
At 6:45, the patrons of the Bridges Bar, wearing their green NAACP conference credentials and sipping cocktails, watched the television as Prince walked onto the stage.
"Oh, no!" screamed one woman holding an appletini. "Prince is in the house!"
Prince, who paid tribute to "the true God Jahova," actually wasn't in the house either. His performance was stock footage too.
After the Prince clip, the live feed to the ballroom came back on the screen, and showed two men bringing out the presidential podium. The patrons of Bridges applauded. David Myrick, a community activist from New York, and his party ordered another round of white russians and brandy and settled in.
A few minutes later, the president was introduced. He came out in a red tie, white shirt and dark suit. Bridges erupted with applause. Several women ran up and took pictures of the screen with their phones. Imanda Wilson, a 49-year-old from Marion, Illinois, stood up and waved at the screen.
"It's just good to be among friends," Obama said.
"Yeah!" the patrons of Bridges Bar hollered back.
The Bridges viewers listened intently as Obama delivered a passionate speech. They sat hushed when he spoke about slavery and lynchings, made "mmmm-hmmms" when he spoke about the "long day of doing someone else's laundry, the long days of looking after someone else's children" and were jubilant when he said the long civil rights journey had "led me to be here tonight as the 44th president of the United States of America."
Some passages had special resonance for certain of the Bridges audience. When Obama said, "Make no mistake: the pain of discrimination is still felt in America," and added that that was true for "Muslim Americans viewed with suspicion simply because they kneel down to pray to their God," Al Mulla, a 55-year-old woman wearing a hijab and visiting New York from Kuwait City, put down her glass of water and clapped.
When he began a long portion of his speech calling for more emphasis on education and demanding greater responsibility on the parts of black children and parents when it came to studying to get ahead, saying, "You know what I'm talking about," Wilson shouted back, "Yes we do!"
When Obama leaned down into the podium's microphone, as he often does to punctuate his key points, and thundered, "No one has written your destiny for you. Your destiny is in your hands -- you cannot forget that. That's what we have to teach all of our children. No excuse," Richardson, the Michael Jackson fan who was now watching from a table in the bar, yelled, "No excuses! No excuses!"
And when Obama said, "We need to go back to the time, back to the day when we parents saw somebody, saw some kid fooling around and -- it wasn't your child, but they'll whup you anyway," Richardson laughed and said, "I remember that."
The president concluded by saying, "One hundred years from now, on the 200th anniversary of the NAACP, let it be said that this generation did its part; that we too ran the race; that full of faith that our dark past has taught us, full of the hope that the present has brought us, we faced, in our lives and all across this nation, the rising sun of a new day begun. Thank you, God bless you. God bless the United States of America."
With that, everyone in the Bridges Bar jumped out of their seats to applaud.
"God Bless you, God Bless the United States of America," yelled Richardson.
Wilson, the woman from Illinois, tearfully hugged Bill Grunewald, a 51-year-old white lawyer from Medford, Wisconsin, who had watched the speech at the next table. Then she hugged his wife. Then his daughters.
A few minutes later, everyone in the bar crammed up against Bridges' wall-length window to see the presidential motorcade drive past on 54th Street in an attempt to get a glimpse of the president. They did. Obama waved at them through the tinted glass of his stretched Cadillac and, euphorically, they all waved back.

The press release of the week, from the Gorilla Glue company, subject of a Zell Miller comment that raised some eyebrows this week:
News Facts * In response to Zell Miller's recent comments, The Gorilla Glue Company sends letter to President Obama. * The response was sent today from the desk of Peter Ragland, President, The Gorilla Glue Company. * The Gorilla Glue Company does not advocate the gluing of President Obama to his chair with their product. * The quality adhesive products produced by the company are for the toughest building and repair jobs. * Gorilla brand products are created with strength and toughness as the goal. * The Gorilla Glue Company is a family owned business located in Cincinnati, Ohio. * Gorilla Glue represents just the type of growing small business that President Obama mentions as the job creators in our country. * Gorilla Glue continues to: create new jobs, boast of no lay-offs, provide healthcare for all full-time employees and proudly make all products in the USA.
Quotes Attributed to Peter Ragland, President, The Gorilla Glue Company:
* Zell Miller's recent comments have thrust our product and company into the limelight. * While our products are known for being strong and tough we certainly would not advocate attempting to glue the Leader of the free world to his chair.

Fiscal Conservative my Ass. He can't accept can the stimulus money for his constituents, but he sure likes to travel in style on their dime.
Aside from the damage done to his standing as a social conservative, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s recent admission of an extramarital affair may end up tarnishing another of his political credentials — his carefully honed reputation as a tightfisted steward of taxpayer money...
The records detail more than $468,000 worth of state-funded travel for Sanford and show that he routinely billed taxpayers for high-end airline seats, racking up more than $44,000 on business- and first-class tickets. He often stayed in pricey hotels that far exceeded the rates he imposed on other state employees.
I'm tired of getting pimped. I need that public option playa!

Gary Frago, California Councilman, Sent Racist Anti-Obama Jokes To Staff
Yet another local official has gotten in hot water for sending around racist emails about the president. This time it's Gary Frago of Atwater, California.
In the past several months Atwater City Councilman Gary Frago has sent at least a half-dozen e-mails to city staff and other prominent community members containing racist jokes aimed at President Barack Obama, his wife and black people in general.
In all, the Sun-Star obtained seven e-mails that Frago sent from October 2008 to February 2009 from an anonymous source.
Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that "nigger rigs" should now be called "presidential solutions."
"I don't see where there's a story, I'm not the only one that does it," Fargo said in his defense, after the Merced Sun Star published the offensive emails. "I didn't originate them, they came to me and I just passed them on."
Previous disastrous interactions between racially-insensitive public officials and modern technology include the "historical keepsake photo" sent around by a Tennessee state government staffer, the picture of watermelons on the White House lawn distributed by a California mayor, and the Michelle Obama gorilla joke posted on Facebook by a GOP activist and ex-official.
"But...but...but I didn't write it! I just forwarded it to a bunch of people and laughed! I didn't write it though!"
I wonder if he realizes that all the people who managed to graduate from grade school don't think he's clever.
I'm at the point now where if I see an elected official within my state misbehaving, I'm quite willing to make sure they get replaced by someone better able to care about and represent their people.

\Chip Pickering's Wife Claims He Had Affair
JACKSON, Miss. — The estranged wife of former U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering claims in a lawsuit that the Mississippi Republican had an affair that ruined their marriage and derailed his political career.
Leisha Pickering said in the lawsuit filed this week that her husband and the woman dated in college, reconnected and began having an affair while he was in Congress and living in a building where several Christian lawmakers reside on C Street near the U.S. Capitol. Chip Pickering is the third Republican with ties to the building at 133 C Street SE to find his personal life making headlines in recent weeks, after Nevada U.S. Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
Leisha Pickering is seeking unspecified damages in the alienation of affection lawsuit she filed this week against Elizabeth Creekmore Byrd of Jackson. The Pickerings filed for divorce in June 2008, but it is not complete.
Chip Pickering, 45, was elected to Congress in 1996, retired in January and is now a lobbyist in Washington for Cellular South, the company Creekmore Byrd's family owns. The lawsuit does not say when the affair started.
He said in a statement Thursday that his marriage is irreparably damaged.
"I still believe it is in the best interest of our five boys if our differences are resolved privately and before the appropriate court and not in the media," Pickering said.
He cast himself as a defender of decency, particularly on television and the Internet, and was among House members urging then-President George W. Bush to declare 2008 "the National Year of the Bible."
Another lawmaker who lived at the C Street house, Ensign, a member of the Christian ministry Promise Keepers, stepped down from the Senate Republican leadership in June after admitting he had an affair for much of last year with a woman on his campaign staff.

Federal agents have arrested a convicted murderer for allegedly providing the gun later used to kill ex-NFL quarterback Steve McNair.
Adrian J. Gilliam Jr. was arrested by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
A criminal complaint unsealed Friday in Nashville says that Gilliam -- who was convicted of murder and attempted armed robbery in 1993 in Florida -- admitted he sold the gun to the woman who later shot McNair.
McNair was shot to death on July 4 at his condo by his 20-year-old mistress Sahel Kazemi, who then turned the gun on herself.
The complaint, signed by ATF agent Mickey French, charges Gilliam with illegally possessing a firearm, which he is barred from doing as a felon.
Detectives traced the gun to its 2002 sale at a pawn shop, according to the complaint. Gilliam eventually bought it from an individual for $100 about a year ago. According to court documents, Gilliam admitted to detectives he sold the gun to Kazemi for $100.
That girl was nutzo, if she didn't get the gun from him, she would have gotten it from somewhere else.
whiterosebuddy
Well the real irony is if McNair had not bought that Navigator or at least PAID for it, he might be alive.
See Kashmi, on her waitress salary, was having to pay TWO car notes...so she decided to sell her old vehicle.
And THAT's how she met Adrian, trying to sell her car to him...and then says to him, she was interested in buying a gun...even though he wasn't gonna buy the car he told her, he DID have a gun for sale for $200.00
The transaction for the gun transpired 2 days b4 she shot him.
Far less, than a car payment on a NAVI...McNair was just not slick enough for his own good.
The good thing is the seller violated Federal Law regarding not only the ownership but the selling as well. Feds made it clear the Tenn law did not over rule Federal law.
Everyone else who has an investment in this is mad, glad to see he is expressing that frustration we all have. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if this does not get fixed now, it is going to be several generations before we have this chance. People are ready now, and we got the numbers behind making this happen. If you haven't called your senators and congresswomen/men yet, please do so NOW.
Although...I will say...*chuckle*... I waiting for Angry Black Man to show up somewhere in the media. They have been waiting to use that term for the longest time.
Ok, I'm gonna say something once, and we shall never talk about this again: I never saw what people meant when they said Obama looks cute. But this is probably the first time I think he looks sexy. He looks all manly and stuff when he's yelling at folk.
