Pelosi: Resolution on Michael Jackson unnecessary

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise "contrary views" about the pop star's life.

Lawmakers are free to use House speeches "to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution."

A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer's charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.

Even before Pelosi's comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who posted a video on YouTube calling Michael Jackson a "pervert" and a "pedophile," has pledged to do all he could to block the resolution.

Michael Jackson was acquitted in 2005 of charges that he molested a 13-year-old boy. Those allegations, and his admission that children slept in his bed at his home but nothing sexual occurred, have led some members of Congress to put distance between themselves and any formal honor for the entertainer.

"A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views to — that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference where she discussed various legislative matters.

Unbowed, Jackson Lee said she will seek support from colleagues who thanked her when she introduced the measure June 26, one day after Michael Jackson died. She said honorary resolutions don't often "pass the next day."

"On this floor we elevate people and doing that we have to work to tell your story," she said after a House vote. But she would need support from Democratic leadership for the resolution to advance to the full House from the committee where it is now.

When members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a moment of silence in the House after Jackson died June 25, some lawmakers walked out of the chamber.

Jackson Lee has pledged that the resolution, now before the House Foreign Affairs Committee where she is a member, would come to the full House for debate. Such honorary measures normally move quickly from committee to the full House and pass on a voice vote.

But Jackson Lee's resolution was in trouble early. It drew only one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., and was not endorsed by other black caucus members.

From the stage at Jackson's memorial Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jackson Lee hoisted a framed copy of the resolution.

yes,I read something recently about how he specifically requested a black chef because he wanted to give jobs to black folks in those kinds of jobs because they rarely get a break in Hollywood. How many other black celebrities chose to employ black folks in those kinds of positions?

Also, the first time I ever saw someone tell the truth and have Egyptians portrayed by black people was "Remember the Time". All beautiful black people. That was something. It is so sad Sepia, that they hounded MJ so badly about his disease and turned his efforts to his symptoms into 'eccentricities'...basically used them to create this entire 'whackojacko' persona.

It would have not taken any effort to have compassion and balance the reporting instead of going to such extremes to make him into a bizarre caricature. Have White Supremacists Really Gone Mainstream?
In November 2007, on the weekend after a $5 million one day "moneybomb" for Rep. Ron Paul's presidential bid, I covered a rally for the candidate in Philadelphia and met a student who had come to pass out fliers attacking him. "He's got truly radical views that are being mainstreamed at events like this," said Matt Sullivan, a liberal who was attending Temple University. A largely white crowd brushed him aside; his fliers, which reprinted racist statements about blacks that ran in an old Paul newsletter, were crumpled up.

Two months later, everyone who followed the race learned that Paul's connections to racists had been hidden in plain sight, in many more newsletters and in speaking engagements. In October 2008, Paul spoke at the 50th Anniversary of the John Birch Society.

All of this has been forgotten in the mainstream press, in which Paul is covered as a compelling political eccentric, but I thought of all it while reading Blood and Politics. At one point, Leonard Zeskind recreates a 1983 meeting of "tax protesters" and "Identity Christians" in Kansas who pass around a flier that can inform their neighbors of why their farms are worth ever less and less. It excoriates "Jewish bankers" and names "the real owners" of the Federal Reserve, including the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers, Lehman Brothers, and Goldman Sachs.

Attacks on Paul are characterized as paranoid, obsessive and unfair, as I'm sure Zeskind's book will be characterized. Just this week, The Atlantic's political reporter Marc Ambinder wrote that Republicans suffer from a "double standard" that gives them "much less of a margin for error when it comes to making racially insensitive remarks."

The implication was that conservatives might have a few bad apples in their movement, or that they might make some gaffes in their pursuit, but that their version of racial and economic justice -- an end to racial preferences, tax cuts, school vouchers -- is perfectly legitimate. And Zeskind argues against this. Willis Carto's bigoted Liberty Lobby flourished with Barry Goldwater. Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan appointed lawyers who chipped away at civil rights. Pat Buchanan "courted [David] Duke's constituency" when he ran for president. Scratch a conservative Republican and you'll find a racist; dust off a Republican idea and you'll find a policy that would elevate the white majority over racial minorities.

This is much further than I'd go, because I know that the Myron Magnets and Charles Murrays who have convinced today's Republicans that, for example, welfare without restrictions has a malicious effect on its recipients, did not do so because they wanted to preserve white privilege. Most bad faith, racially-obsessive policies -- the fear of Mexican immigrants that David Duke used as a recruiting tool three decades before Tom Tancredo -- are adopted by people who are simply worried about their economic well-being and want to find an attackable culprit. So, fear of the shadowy federal reserve, and fear of Sonia Sotomayor's outrageous idea that non-white judges might make wiser decisions in discrimination cases than white judges.

A lot of Zeskind's material is fun and sensational, but not that worrying. Overtly racist, David Duke politics aren't effective in Barack Obama and Bobby Jindal's America, and the list of Aryan or Klan leaders who have imploded or been revealed as undercover agents is longer than the list of active, full-time racists. Zeskind's more controversial thesis should stick with us, though. Conspiracy theories about the "real rulers of the world" and anger at policies that might lift up minorities are very, very easily transmitted into mainstream politics. It's not a "double standard" or an act of political witch-hunting to ask whether a new conservative idea, wrapped up as an appeal to America's founding principles, is actually a throwback to base racism.

Tuesday's public memorial for Michael Jackson drew a big, but not a record, U.S. television audience: 31.1 million viewers on 19 networks, according to Nielsen. In January, President Obama's inauguration drew 38 million.
But what happened behind the scenes in the days leading up to the event? Ken Ehrlich, the storied Grammy Awards producer, who worked with choreographer Kenny Ortega to produce the event, shared behind-the-scenes details Wednesday.

• Paris Jackson's tearful tribute to her father was unplanned. "My impression was that the brothers and sisters, and definitely not the parents, would talk," Ehrlich says. "Nobody knew she would speak up."

• The Jacksons specifically requested the Rev. Al Sharpton, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and the children of Martin Luther King Jr. A few on Ehrlich's wish list were unavailable: Diana Ross, Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas and Paul McCartney.

• The program was rushed into place, with one day of rehearsal. Mariah Carey, who apologized Wednesday for her shaky rendition of I'll Be There, was the only one who didn't rehearse. Ehrlich e-mailed her, calling her concerns "silly nonsense" and noting that by being human and acknowledging the casket, she created a comfort level for acts that followed.• Ehrlich learned Saturday that the casket would be brought to the Staples Center. He notified memorial participants so they wouldn't be surprised. "I was a little taken aback initially, but the family was absolutely right. It meant so much to the artists and the fans."

• Some elements fell into place very late. We Had Him, Maya Angelou's poem (requested by Katherine Jackson), didn't reach Queen Latifah until an hour before the memorial, and Angelou insisted they go over the reading before Latifah hit the podium.

• John Mayer was going to play Smile, until Ehrlich learned Jermaine Jackson wanted to sing it. Mayer was happy to switch to Human Nature, the song he was noodling in the studio the day Jackson died.

Don't have any proof - but the man they had a falling out with years ago - Berry Gordy - was given a prominent role at the service. I don't recall Quincy's name being mentioned at all during the service. Must be all that ish he's been talking about Michael since 2005. And, quiet as it's kept, Quincy doesn't have ANY room to discuss other folks issues.
