These people do get slammed ALL THE TIME. And yes, the effects of colonialism have evaded the consciousness of the community even today- even if they say it is of “free will.”

It's a huge debate. Not one I started or imagined. Michael, as you said, acted in the extreme, and it is heart breaking truth.

I'm sorry, it just gets me when people complain about the coverage of something like there is nothing they can do. It is not like anyone is getting the clockwork orange treatment.

Lastly, according to one poster, just because I too issue with something they posted, I'm stifling their dissent. I don't think I'm doing that, I have opinions just like everyone else. I'm sick of other people making me backtrack my opinion. I did that when i was younger, but no more.

There have been countless academic journals, written about this topics in both African American and Latino Studies.

My interest on the topic shouldn't be surprising at all. MJ- talking about the details of his death and whatnot is not what interest me. Our willingness to eschew a popular community of color issue because of his untimely death, is of interest. I didn't say anything about MJ for a week. I celebrated yesterday… remembering the old him I really liked. I felt emotion for his family, not for me, not for his fans.

Today, I want to talk about subjects that matter to me and my community.

Do you think that folks that perm their hair, wear weaves, and hate getting dark also have self-hate? Why would MJ be different, other than he took it to the extreme?

And if he did…should that make us not love him, mourn his death, weep at his passing? No. It makes no difference to me. My love for Michael is unconditional!

And you know what, no I haven't heard the statement “the sun never set on the British Empire” but I am aware of the institutional effects of colonialism.

And I am not he was hate filled in conscious sense, no matter what the cause, that self-hate existed, no matter what the cause: Joe, TV, slavery, comic books, or any influence. Why are we denying it? Is naming it judging it?

The issues about his racial identity (in the way he chose to express it,) has been a source of discussion with communities of color since the 80s and has never been the kind of discussion like “look at the freak,” which is the nature of the discussion in the white mainstream media.

This isn't new at all. Just wondering why we are dismissing the importance of the issue, I say this especially since people want to elevate him to civil rights martyr status. In this regard, I think he caused harm.

It's been officially a week and I have not made any comment about his race politics.

I celebrated his life yesterday. I'm no longer interested in seeing stories about what happen to his pets, his toys, etc.

He had a great impact- one of which was on the discussion of race politics.
