That said, Obama (or anyone else) is and never will be responsible for the personal decisions that individual Americans of all colors make everyday – decisions that over time can have deleterious effects. Obama isn't responsible for how you raise your kids or what you put in your body, he isn't responsible for the aspirations and goals that you set for yourself. He isn't responsible for you reading a book and expanding your mind versus planting yourself in front of the television.

After all, where would Obama be if his mom didn't drag him out of bed as a youngster, and make him personally accountable to the life that she envisioned – nay, demanded – of him?

On Wednesday's open thread, isonprize, playing devil's advocate asked how will people be able to attend meetings when they already have lots on their plates, often having to dodge bullets in their own neighborhoods, managing a hectic life etc., which was a viable question.

Well, visiting my own local government website, I found that the city :

has webcasts available for the city council meetings

broadcast the meetings live on televison and has repeat broadcast and actually stream them live

EVERY city council member has an email address listed on the site

all city council minutes and agenda are PUBLIC info and available in PDF format from the city's website

and they even invite citizens to be on local commissions, boards, etc…..

Basically, we are in a technological age…..anything we want to know can be researched and found if/when we request it

In order for real CHANGE to happen, if we want real unemployment addressed in our community, if we want advances in the shools are children attend each and every day, we MUST be front and center in that process.

I am thankful for what President Obama represents, but our country is too vast, our concerns are too numerous and our local communities are too numerous to only think President Obama can fix it all.

I know more young Black men and women in my community than Barack Obama will ever know personally……and I and others like me, must speak up for ourselves and others within our own personal radius before we start demanding accountability for a neighborhood federal officials may not even know exists.

I do think some people suffer from the “someone give me the information” syndrome as opposed to looking it up for themselves. Most local government post their information on their web sites. Local libraries have almost everything people need to know.

We'd also be surprised at how many local political offices are available and how no one runs for them.
