Obama Shoe Photo Seen As "Insult" By Some Israelis A photograph of President Obama has caused some controversy in Israel.
White House photographer Pete Sousa on Monday snapped a photo of the president while he talked on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. In the photo, Obama has his feet propped up on a desk inside the Oval Office, and a number of Israeli newscasters last night called the posture insulting, since in many Arab countries, it is considered an insult to show someone the sole of your shoe.
While the shoe-sole taboo is not a Jewish custom necessarily, the reaction to the photo is a telling indication of the way some Israeli commenters are adjusting to the new U.S. administration's approach to the Middle East. It was widely reported in the both Israeli and U.S. press after Netanyahu's visit to Washington last month that meetings between the two leaders had been tense, and President Obama's speech in Egypt last week also raised some eyebrows in Israel.
An article in Haaretz - which, incidentally, is considered to be one of the more liberal-leaning Israeli dailies - interpreted the photo like this: A photo released by the White House, which shows Obama talking on the phone with Netanyahu on Monday, speaks volumes: The president is seen with his legs up on the table, his face stern and his fist clenched, as though he were dictating to Netanyahu: "Listen up and write 'Palestinian state' a hundred times. That's right, Palestine, with a P." As an enthusiast of Muslim culture, Obama surely knows there is no greater insult in the Middle East than pointing the soles of one's shoes at another person. Indeed, photos of other presidential phone calls depict Obama leaning on his desk, with his feet on the floor. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/10/obama-...

Man Behind Iran Policy Faces Big Task
Ross Is Seeking Engagement With Pressure By Glenn Kessler Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, June 10, 2009
Diplomatic troubleshooter Dennis Ross is a legendary talker, a specialist in developing peace processes -- long ones. For 12 years, in the first Bush presidency and both terms of the Clinton presidency, he was at the center of the seemingly endless effort to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
White House to Propose New Rules for Executive Compensation By David Cho Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, June 10, 2009
The Obama administration is set to announce today two proposals that would empower shareholders and the Securities and Exchange Commission to have more oversight over executive compensation at all publicly traded firms, government sources said.
The measures would require legislation, which is expected to be sent to Capitol Hill soon, one of the sources said.
Under a so-called "say-on-pay" plan, shareholders would have a greater voice over what top earners at firms are paid.
A second proposal aims to provide company compensation committees more independence as they determine what executives should make.
Members of these committees would be banned from taking any fees from their respective firms other than what they would make for sitting on the committee. If they hire an attorney or consultant to help them in their work, the contractors could only report to the committee rather than the chief executive of a firm.
As early as today, the administration may also release its long-awaited clarification on what firms that have taken federal bailout funds can pay their executives.
Kenneth Feinberg, who managed the government's efforts to compensate the families of those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, is expected to be appointed as a "compensation czar."
Most firms that have taken emergency federal aid will face caps on bonuses, but not salary. But Feinberg will have broad powers over firms that have taken an exceptional amount of federal aid. He could have the power to curb both salary and bonuses at such companies, which include Citigroup, Bank of America and American International Group.

lmao! In a word...Yes!
Monie
I wanted to ask this question,....
A local newpaper had an article that detailed what I felt was an issue that is probably pervasive all over the country.
In Hampton, Virginia, Blacks/AA make up about 47 percent of the population, YET the city of Hampton contracts/does only 1.6 percent of its business with minority-owned businesses. Local groups like the NAACP and so forth were basically silent regarding this issue....at least according to one local Black journalist.
The question: Is President Obama repsonsible or should be held "accountable" for this?
Now there was a JJP post that claims President Obama overlooks racial inequality...and I am not here to argue for or against the premise of that article....but when I see situations such as what has existed in Hampton, the questions becomes, who is accountable for such a disparity as that one....should Obama be held accountable for that and yet every local citizen, city council members, Black elected leaders be off the hook.
I want to see us more ENGAGED in our local government.....we must be EDUCATED about what goes on in our backyards, it may surprise you at the inequalities that exist and are right up under our noses EVERY DAY.
Hold President Obama accountable...yes for what he can DIRECTLY be held accountable for...there are many facetsof our lives that are determined by our state and local governments and yet that is where most of our apathy lies
But before we get on the megaphones saying he ain't addressing Black/AA issues, let's make sure we attend a city council meeting in our city/town.....contact the mayor's office....attend School Board meetings, who often has a LOT of say about our local schools and how they operate.....demand that funds be routed to upkeep and improve our local communities...ask that funds be directed for our young people and make sure we make a damn good case justifying it.......
MsKitty
"We are the change we've been waiting for"...I heard that somewhere, but I'm drawing a blank ;-)
In total agreement with your post.

LOL! I'm borrowing that one!
isonprize
I'm telling Tavis. fo' real -- LOLOL
Monie,
I agree with your post. So here' are my questions/comments (playing devil's advocate, of course.)
When do people have to the time to attend the city council, contact the mayors office, etc? What do they say when they get someone to answer the phone, show up at the meeting, etc?
I work in public health directly in the community. Folks' priorities are really different from the issues that get raised in city council sessions, (scroll down to Vulcangirl's comment, for example.)
It takes work, REAL WORK, to organize folks around an issue. It's grinding, unselfish, low paying work. PBO knows that, he's done it.
It's why shady stuff happens all the time. And as a people, we need to 'step up the game' around staying aware of what affects us as a community. It requires a coordinated effort. And yes, that is what elected officials are supposed to do, but we all know, that ain't happening.
Depending on the neighborhood, that can be tough when you're dodging bullets or working two jobs and trying to juggling baby Jamal to daycare,
Monie
isonprize,
Yes I know are lives are business and our people, especially Black women, know multi-tasking better than anyone.
But I know in my local area, at least if you have cable/satellite, City Council meetings are broadcast on television....so you can still be kept abreast of the issues.
Go to your city's website...we are in a technological age, e-mail is that quick ...almost every official has an e-mail address and depending on how serious we are about an issue, I would even sending in a pre-recorded message and ask that it be played or at least addressed at a meeting. we can live stream and broadcast almost any and everything these days and local and state governments are no different....if the White House can do it, so can everyone else. Also, request and see if some live calls may be taken during a meeting.
And if time and other priorities are an issue, I would say "co-op" your time with other concerned citizens. Example: A group of friends can volunteer to take turns and watch the other's children etc, while they take turns and send a representative to a local government meeting and continue this cycle until every gets a chance....you can even create your own block's "Concerned citizen coalition" and build and demand a working relationship with your government.
One thing we tend to think is that Homeowner's associations and other groups only apply to more affluent neighborhoods...and that is simply not the case. We all can build our own neighborhood coalitions and build momentum in the process....straight grassroots..... and the grassroots movement needs to ARISE now more than ever. And yes, we may not even get paid for it, but it is so worth it in the end....and our young people ARE watching. I can't even count the number of times I hear young people say...well no one cares about us or is speaking out for us....we need more and they won't listen.
Like Miranda noted in SW ATL, city officials have NO problem closing down services, done in secrecy, when they know they will face no oppostion because NOBODY showed up to protest or raise concern. We get shafted EACH AND EVERY time due to apathy, plain and simple.
The greatest threat to me, especially in Black communities, is the lack of cohesiveness and the lack of REAL community.....that is what has directly contributed to the deterioration of "community" that my elders once experience.....for all the Jim Crow conditions they experience...they never let up on their political activism and it was talked about and organized from the church to the barber shop to the hair salon.
We go in our houses each day and forget about the community that exist outside our own doors.
isonprize
See, THAT'S what I'm talking about! (Like I said, I'm playing devil's advocate...) I think that is also what PBO means when he says "I can't do this all by myself"
WE do have to re-create community. It starts with one person, one voice. We have to take back streets and neighborhoods. We have to re-energize "Civic Associations"
Hell, SAY HELLO when a person is walking down the street.
It takes a community leader to get other's on the bandwagon. We can do it, we just need keep the fire that we had to get this man elected. YES WE CAN!
spirit_55z
Co-SIGN.
One of the attempted slurs the Rethugs used time and again last year during the campaign against Barack Obama was his role as a "community organizer"
They tried to paint him as a Ghetto-loving socialist, when in reality we know a community orgainizer is a POWERFUL force for REAL CHANGE, and that was the REAL THREAT to this wingnuts.
They don't want folks organized and cohesive. They want turmoil, chaos, and decay. Meanwhile the funds get allocated to the few and for nepharious means.
It is time to hold not just local and federal officials accountable, we need to hit the streets.
BTW, I've been volunteering by mentoring black teen girls for years.

YES WE CAN....and I want all my people, regardless of political stripes to get together for our common good....it is essential to OUR survival period.
I hear what you are saying. The saying that all politics are local is very true. Recently in my area, a sitting school board member lost the primary race. After the general election, a sitting member resigned, and the person who lost in the primary was appointed/selected in a very shady manner and was selected as board president. There were some questions, but for the most part, *crickets*
A few years back, the board voted for school uniforms, i.e. kakhi pants with a belt and any color of polo shirt. Folks are literally marching in the streets, and it's a year of Letters to the Editor, vote e'm out, we can't afford to buy new clothes, and my kid's too fat to wear a belt. Seriously.
All of this goes down, and it's the Unions and bad teachers who are ruining schools.
Sometimes I hate people.

Monie, I agree with you 100%.
To be honest, sometimes I think all of the complaining about Obama not addressing Black issues is nothing more than folks trying to get Obama to prove he's "black enough" under the guise of concern for problems affecting our community.

BINGO! Sepia, you've captured what I've been thinking. Maybe if The President gets his militant/Nat X hat out, we can finally trust his "Blackness."

Excellent point Monie and its the sho nuff truth. President Obama is not responsible for the city of Atlanta closing down two fire stations in the West end of Atlanta and shutting down the city parks that service our kids the most in Southwest Atl....but yet I constantly here on the local talk radio station that somehow it IS his responsibility. It never ceases to amaze me.
Did anyone - Rikyrah! - catch Big Ed's meltdown last night?

Christian Group Blesses Sotomayor Confirmation Hearing Room With Oil (VIDEO)
A Christian group called "Faith and Action in the Nation's Capital" went to the room in the Senate Hart Building where the confirmation hearing for Sonia Sotomayor is likely to take place in order to bless the room, CBN's David Brody reports. it is blessed oil. represents healing and worship, consecration and prayer. It is used for folks who are sick, need extra extra prayer, who just want an annointing with oil. The average time that it takes to tame a recession is 6-months to a year. Bush ‘43’ tamed the recession left by Clinton in about 6-months. The one exception was Roosevelt, who had made the recession much worse, actually prolonging it, to a point that it took a war to tame that recession, and America still suffers from his failed policies.
Right now, the Top 50% of wage-earners pay about 97% of Federal Taxes, and that Top 50% includes households that file jointly, who earn around $25-$30 thousand a year (I forget the exact number, but that’s close). The Bottom 50% pays the remaining 3%. I went on social security last year, in order to join the Bottom 50%, and pay no Federal Taxes anymore. Basically, I got out when I saw that Obama might win. Hillary and McCain would’ve been bad enough, but Obama was obviously going to be a bigger disaster than either of them. Bush ‘43’ spent like a Democrat, but take a look at this CHART to see what Obama has spent in just a few months – “Under Obama the Bush trend keeps going, but this time on steroids.”
The next great crisis: America's debt - …but for now what's so big and so dangerous that it distresses such diverse types as Krugman and Ryan - and should scare all Americans - is the Great Debt Threat … The bill is far too big for only the rich to pick up. There aren't enough of them. America will have to lean on citizens far below the $250,000 income threshold: nurses, electricians, secretaries, and factory workers … To keep the debt from wrecking the economy, the U.S. would need to raise annual federal income taxes an average of $11,000 in 2019 for all families that pay them, an increase of about 55%.
(NOTE: It’s actually much worse than CNN’s Shawn Tully is reporting here, and the MSM can’t provide cover for Obama much longer, i.e. much higher taxes are coming soon…a lot sooner than 2019.)
The growing debt will burden Americans not just with heavier taxes but also with higher interest rates and slower economic growth … As Krugman and Ryan point out, the problem isn't so much the big budget gaps for this year and next, though their scale is shocking. It's the policies that will allow the trend to become far worse in the future.
In 2005-06, Bush ‘43’ warned of the Democrat Party’s created problems of social security, Medicare, and the looming subprime mess, but the Democrats all claimed that such programs were no problem. Now they want to blame Bush ‘43’ for the financial mess that they themselves created. Democrat Party supporters have now put Obama in Office, and they will blindly support him until financial-ruin comes down on their own heads – it will be their Karma. I can barely wait to see their reactions at that point!

For those in VA-and those not as well-what questions would you ask of Bob McDonnell?
We've got a blogger call today, and if there's something you want to know, I'll try my best to get it answered.
Val
JJP - I sat in on the call with Bob McDonnell this afternoon.
Brief summary: Bob McDonnell promises to provide jobs, tackle transportation, healthcare, failing schools, 401K, while ensuring no major tax increases to residents. He is still against the economic stimulus, is committed to remaining a fiscal conservative but will use innovative ways to generate revenue for Virginia. . . he's just not sure what those innovative ways are at this point.
How will he fund all the programs? He doesn't know exactly yet but it is in the works. These policies are not in place at this time (could be ready in about 5 months or so) and until then he did not identify any specific way to fund ANY of his policy proposals. not healthcare, failing schools, 401K, job loss.
I will be watching and engaged in this governor's race for sure.
Town
Will Bob McDonnell continue the Jim Gilmore tradition of having the government interfere in end-of-life decisions, a la the Hugh Flynn case?
Will Bob McDonnell follow in the footsteps of Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince Wm) and try to take birth control out of college student health centers?
Cuz birth control might cut down on pregnancies which eliminates the need for abortions.
How is he going to help parts of the state which are seeing double digit unemployment numbers, like Danville?
What's his position on increasing state funding for schools like UVa, so they won't have to admit a bunch of out-of-state students to balance the books?
Val
I understand that he promises new policy proposals, jobs and more opportunities to every voter in every region of Virginia. but . . . have a few questions
what are the "new " policy proposals, who will it benefit and how and when will he implement?
ask him about his record which shows career-long opposition to helping laid-off Virginians
ask him about his decision in the legislature to vote against health benefits for unemployed textile workers AND for older unemployed workers
raise his decision to oppose the acceptance of $125 million in federal stimulus funds to enable Virginia to extend unemployment benefits to Virginians who work part time or are in approved job training programs. Ask him what is his solution to this situation for those in Virginia who need the help NOW.
Specifically -- How does he foresee increasing job opportunities in this economic climate?
How do you balance your claim to keep Virginia an employee-friendly state against a career record that shows opposition to helping laid-off workers?
...that work for you?
Val
tie that in with his objection to the stimilus. I want to know how he expects to fund these things. (fact based only please. don't need platitudes). also touch on healthcare for the unemployed and ask him specifics on what his "new policies" are. A link to a site containing this data is fine because clearly he won't be able to delve into it during a 1 hour session.
Monie
Val, I didn't even bother to respond to D.'s request.
McDonnell is one of the most anti-educational funding politicians...horrible record.
Honestly, if he gets elected I will be fearful for what it means for our young people in terms of education, especially early education and special education populations.
Come on, Monie....give us a shot. I'm not writing you off; don't write us off.
Let us address your concerns...that's what we're supposed to be about.
Town
McDonnell needs to address the higher education funding.
Certain people are grumbling and complaining that top tier Virginia schools like UVa are admitting too many out of state students over VA students.
The reality is UVA and other schools are admitting the out of state kids over the VA residents because the state can charge the out of state kids $$$$$ more than VA residents. They do this because VA doesn't adequately fund the top tier universities.
My concern is that when Ethan and Isabella don't get admitted to UVa and W&M, the public blame will be put on Donte' and LaKisha getting admittance instead of UVa and W&M admitting out of state students to cover what Virginia won't fund.
Monie
McDonnell's history speaks for itself D.
Now is it possible for him to change?...maybe, but I doubt it. He is your 'typical" Republican when it comes to issues of education and that is one area I just can't support.
I can understand concerns about spending....but one thing I will NEVER condone or agree with is denying or shortchanging children. PERIOD.
From personal experiences and the lessons I've learned so far dealing with my own children....our children need good resources and opportunities poured into them now or we, as taxpayers, will all be paying for a "different" type of resource for them as they get older.
I've done my research and McDonnell just ain't cutting it for me at this point....and yes I will still listen to his campaign as well as Deeds......but I doubt I will be swayed.
spirit_55z
Great questions, Val.
I expect all of the questions be answered by McDonnell and a full report from D. LOL!

Obama's Campaign Arm Redoubles Effort To Pass Health Care, Public Plan
Following up on its health care reform meet-ups that occurred over this past weekend, OFA will debut a set of Internet and media functions designed to sustain pressure on members of Congress to pass a comprehensive overhaul.
Among those tools is a health care pledge that demands that, "Every American must have the freedom to choose their plan and doctor -- including the choice of a public insurance option."
The language is an affirmation that the president, and the Democratic institutions that he controls, is invested in making a public option for health care coverage a component for any systemic overhaul. Whether Democrats in Congress are able to follow suit -- and the extent to which the White House will compromise on this principle -- remain the most key questions in the upcoming debate.
