I agree, and if they'd been charged appropriately in the first place, that's what probably would have happened, and none of us would have ever heard about them- there wouldn't have been any reason to.

They should at least have gotten 23 days in jail (same amount of time Paris Hilton spent in the pokey) plus a year probation.
Two pplz fight in school – suspend both.
Two pplz beat down one person – suspend the two.
Three or more pplz do a serious beat down on someone – a little jail time plus probation.

If you want to spend the time, you might still be able to see the hospital photo of the kid that recieved the beat down. I saw it. He got the shit kicked out of him, and that was just his face.
As to going to the school dance that night, that was young male bravado. When I was a younger man, i was in an auto accident. Broke my arm, lots of stitches in my face. I went home from the ER, changed my bloody shirt and went off to biochemisty lab with blood still on my boots. Its a young man thing.

Let's not forget how the Jena 6 started: with a group of black kids who wanted to sit under the “white tree” at their school only to find a noose there the next day. A group of white bullies targeted these boys and didn't stop until one of the black kids struck back in frustration. Then the black boys receive attempted murder charges and the white boys = nothing.

The bottom line is that this was a case that needed to be solved at school with suspensions and other discipline. The trumped up charges were the type of legal lynching so common in our community. It was the JJP community that helped to fight back. And we won.

You are so on point with this commentary caligirl. It is a huge problem in our community…it speaks to the denigration and devolvement of our culture to the point where thugs and hos are the standard of norms. If you are are not loud, obnoxious, uncouth and downright ignorant..then you just are not 'black enough'..it is called lack of values and self respect not to mention dignity.

YET, this has become the cultural norm? All of this speaks to the huge push away from traditional families and traditional values. Our communities have been turned inside out by accepting that which is clearly LESS THAN as not only acceptable…BUT if you NOT that…then you just are not genuine.

It is a sick sociopathologic condition and the entire community needs to rise up and stamp out…all these jail behaviors that have become accepted norms in the black community…when you act like thugs and have an incarcerated mentality of what is acceptable then we reap criminals as the product of the environment…in or out of jail.

Job well done! I could not imagine my teenage son being in jail and facing a possible 22 years in prison! This ever so prevalent Jim Crow era is exactly the type of apathy that corrodes our country from within.

To those posting stories that these teenage black kids should be incarcerated; justice prevailed here. The white kid beaten attended a school function that very evening. How bad could the “beating” have been? Please stop the dramatics or move to Hollywood where it'll be more useful.

good question. i'll take it even further: it isn't just black girls who get the shaft, it's also SUCCESSFUL BLACK BOYS. as a mother of sons (who are academically successful, managed to somehow stay out of 'juvie', jail, prison) where's the rallying cry to support black male success? i'm not speaking of a few organisations (and thank god they exist!), but rather the en masse, take-it-to-the-streets support and upliftment of regular guys who are handling their business. it seems the typical response is to tear a black male down or be suspicious of his 'true nature' when he's successful. case in point, here are just a few choice descriptors i've read on this blog regarding president obama: he's “fake”, “phony” (supposedly only married michelle to gain favour in the black community…what the fuck?!?), “weak”, “punk”, “stupid”. oh, and how could i forget–”niggerati”!! apparently, unless a black young man is engaged in knuckleheaded bullshit, he's not worthy of support. it's backwards.

They took a plea deal. Didn't one or two of them claim not to have been involved? Now, we're never know for sure. That's just one reason why it's not such a victory.

So they acknowledged their guilt. It all comes down to “money shall set you free”. I feel so proud of “colorofchange”.
One more kick to the head of their ambushed, coldcocked, and unconscious victim and it could easily have been murder (look up subdural hematoma).

Yes it's great they were successful in this situation but we have got to stop rushing in to “save” those that continually make poor choices and are involved in criminal activity. This olive branch seems to only be extended to situations involving racist whites and black men. When it's a black female victim and usually at the hands of a black man there is always utter silence. BW are not “strong” and manly they are women and should be just as vigorously protected, but they are not. Why is that?
