I sooo agree with this. I find that we are the only ethnic group that does not appreciate intelligence, excellence and achievement amongst our peers. It is very disheartening.

I guess but I wouldn't consider myself elite and there are multiple generations of collage grads in my family, I was a member of Jack and Jill etc. Maybe it's because I grew up in California? I think my cousins in the South would be more concerned with this.

i think the Black Elite are described more in terms of education…folks who were the founders of the Divine Nine and such…folks who have generations of college educated family members…

a lot of us today are the 'first' in our family…so no matter how far we go, we still won't be considered a part of the Elite…just one of those who made it out…

let's have this convo again when our grandkids complete college

I basically agree with trueness, the reason that upper class blacks may want to separate themselves from the rest of us b/c secretly they are ashame that no matter what schools they went to or what type of jobs they have they they stiil have no influence on hiring policies or any control over anything, assimilation has only allowed them to remain on the periphial of society and never really a full participant, like michelle said in her thesis……they have never been able to bring others along with them, and they feel they have to separate themselves to hold on to the few perks given to them by white people, however, like somenone commented on another blog these people with all their money and education dont really own any corporations so they can't create economic infastructure in our community that would create employment for other blacks they have spent all their money to live and be near white people just so they can feel special but they can never really escape their blackness so they go the extra mile to seperate “us” and “them” instead of contempt I just feel sorry for them they are even more dependant on white american as the rest of us

It is so depressing to me to spend my time trying to better myself, and thereby finding myself the lone pepper in a sea of salt, only to come back to my “people” and be given the cold shoulder because I don't want to go “that” route. I sometimes feel like we can be just as ignorant towards each other as white people are towards us. The things other blacks have said to me because of what I've done (and what I do) have been appalling… and not the normal “oreo” comments, but I hear them and realize they really believe what they're saying about me.

There's some “support” block that turns on and we can plainly see how no matter where you are on the socio-economic ladder, if you're black, you're susceptible. We can't just see other black folks doing well, in whatever way, and say “Good job” we gotta figure out how even though they're doing it and doing it well, they're STILL not as good as “we” are. Crabs in a barrel… crabs in a barrel.

Wasn't a directory of the Black Elite in the works? I thought The Our Kind of People 800 Register was scheduled to be released last year. Was it ever published?

Maybe I should look under the title Lawrence Otis Graham: He's Part of The Black Elite and Here Are The 799 Other People and/or Families He Wants To Be Associated With, Whether They Like It Or Not

There's a huge jump between saying you don't think a particular outfit is appropriate or flattering, to saying “Michelle doesn't know how to act” and fighting in Popeyes. There's a huge gap between those things…and you've filled in the gap.

It's not a compliment to blacks to suggest that they can't withstand “normal” criticism.
