African-American novel wins Irish literature prize

Michael Thomas won one of English language fiction’s richest prizes on Thursday for a novel depicting the difficulty of attaining the American Dream for an African American.

“Man Gone Down” scooped the 100,000-euro ($140,000) International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, beating off competition from 145 titles nominated by public libraries from 41 countries.

The unnamed first person narrator, once a promising Harvard student and now an impoverished construction worker in Brooklyn, is married to a white woman with whom he has three children.

He is “not fallen but standing on the precipice”, according to the IMPAC judges’ citation. “It is a story of the American Dream gone awry, about what it’s like to feel preprogrammed to fail in life and the urge to escape that sentence,” the book’s U.S. publisher Grove Atlantic says on its website.

Thomas, whose novel was nominated for the prize by the National Library Service of Barbados, said the American Dream can be variously defined, but the credit crisis has certainly pushed African Americans even further from it.

“One of the things I hope are taken away from reading the book is there are different American dreams,” Thomas told Reuters. “One being materialism which this narrator does not really have, it’s more the African American striving for freedom,” he said in an interview.

“If not from slavery then from segregation, if not from segregation then from stereotype, if not from stereotype then from glass ceilings and redline mortgages.”

SOCIAL PROBLEMS

To “redline” can mean to refuse home mortgages to entire neighbourhoods deemed too poor, a term that has acquired significance in the credit crisis, one of whose main causes were financial products based on “subprime” mortgages.

The fact that Barack Obama has become the first African-American president of the United States is not going to solve such social problems at once, though it is a symbolic victory, Thomas said.

“Maybe it’s a message of hope that finally we have a president of intellect and philosophical heft rather than didactic, meanspirited, short-sighted small-mindedness,” he said.

The IMPAC prize, established in 1994 by Dublin City Council and sponsored by U.S. company IMPAC, was last year won by Lebanese novelist Rawi Hage with “De Niro’s Game”, a tale of childhood in wartorn Beirut.

Asked to pick out some of the most important features of his work — a New York Times top ten book of 2007 — Thomas said:

“There is a gallows humour to it, I think.”

"I'm proud that the House and the Senate have acted swiftly and in an overwhelmingly bipartisan fashion to pass this legislation that will protect our kids and improve our public health. Along with legislation to protect credit card owners from unfair rate hikes, homeowners from mortgage fraud and abuse, and taxpayers from wasteful defense spending, this kids tobacco bill would be the fourth piece of bipartisan legislation that I've signed into law over the last month that protects the American consumer, and changes the way Washington works and who Washington works for.

"So I look forward to signing it. I want to thank all the people in the House and the Senate for working so hard to pass this bill in a bipartisan way. And I want to give a special shout-out to my legislative director, Phil Schiliro. He and his team have just done an outstanding job. They've been working on this for a long time, even before they joined the administration. I'm really proud of them."

Dispute Over Afghan Deaths in Strike

KABUL, Afghanistan — Sharply conflicting reports on an American airstrike this week continued to trickle out Friday from American military and Afghan officials as to whether the attack killed civilians.

The airstrike in Ghor Province in western Afghanistan on Tuesday was aimed at a local Taliban militant, Mullah Mustafa, but instead killed 10 civilians and 12 insurgents, according to Sayed Iqbal Munib, the governor of Ghor.

But American officials Friday said the strike killed up to 16 militants and no civilians. A spokeswoman, Elizabeth Mathias, said the strike hit a vehicle “in the middle of nowhere, away from civilians and homes.” She said the military has a video showing the strike hitting the militants away from populated areas, but the military will not release it because its source cannot be revealed.

Mr. Munib said an investigation was continuing.

Civilian deaths have become a political flash point in Afghanistan, undermining public support for the war and inflaming tensions with President Hamid Karzai, who has condemned the American-led coalition for the rising toll.

According to the United Nations, the number of civilian casualties caused last year by the Taliban and other insurgents was several thousand, compared with 828 civilian deaths attributed to American, NATO and Afghan forces, mostly from airstrikes and village raids.

Tuesday’s attack came as Gen. David H. Petraeus, the senior American commander for Iraq and Afghanistan, said this week that violence here had reached a new high and warned of increasing difficulties.

Last week, there were about 400 insurgent attacks compared with about 50 per week in 2004. Tensions have been especially acute recently after an American military investigation concluded that its personnel made significant errors in carrying out airstrikes in western Afghanistan in early May that killed dozens of Afghan civilians in Farah Province.

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission said that operation killed up to 97 civilians, most of them children, while the Afghan government’s figure was 140. The Americans said the number was 20 to 30.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin intensified her war of words with comedian David Letterman on Friday, claiming his controversial joke about one of her daughters had contributed to the "acceptance of abuse of young women" and calling on people to "start really rising up."

Appearing on NBC's Today show, Palin also told host Matt Lauer that he was "extremely naive" if he believed the "Late Show" host's explanation of the joke.

When Lauer noted that Letterman had not mentioned Willow by name and later denied that he was referring to her, Palin responded, "Matt, I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naive to believe that very convenient excuse of David Letterman's the other day. He took a couple of days for him to think of that excuse that, oh, no, he wasn't talking about my daughter who was there with me at the [Yankees] game, the 14-year-old. Well, I think it's a weak excuse."

She added, "I would hope that people really start -- really rising up and deciding it's not acceptable. No wonder young girls, especially, have such low self-esteem in America." Palin said that she could "connect the dots to a degrading statement made about young women, and that does contribute to some acceptance of abuse of young women."

Regardless of the racist speech of Palin, it does not make Lettermans sexist commentary any more acceptable. Calling her a slut in particular was a low blow. If he wants to attack her political positions fine, but inferring that either she or her daughter are sluts is wrong and is the perfect example of the ways in which men shame women to maintain patriarchy. You don't hear him attacking male politicians this way for a reason.

It's interesting that in a defense of her daughter she didn't miss an opportunity to take a cheap shot at the President, calling him "he who must be obeyed" while distorting his gracious plea to the media to lay off of HER family. She distorted that saying he asked the media to lay off of his family. Fuck her! She would sell her daughter to David Letterman if it would help her win the presidency.

We are blessed to live at a time when violent acts of hatred based on race, ethnicity or religion have become rare, at least in this country. As the act of terrorism committed Wednesday at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum should remind us, though, rare doesn't mean nonexistent.

James W. von Brunn, the 88-year-old white supremacist who allegedly took a rifle into the museum and killed security guard Stephen Johns, is more than a bitter, demented old man. He is a known figure in the domestic hate industry, a venom-spewing polemicist whose Web site offered readers the chance to download the opening chapters of his racist, anti-Semitic tome for free -- and to buy the rest of the book for the bargain price of 10 bucks.
Apparently, there weren't enough takers.

The Post reported yesterday that acquaintances say von Brunn had become virtually destitute and was complaining that "someone in Washington" had cut his Social Security benefits as punishment for his political views. His recent e-mail blasts were apocalyptic. "It's time to kill all the Jews," said one.

It's easy to surmise that von Brunn, a rabid Holocaust denier, could have chosen the Holocaust museum as a target because he thought it would offer the opportunity to kill Jews. His writings show that he also hates black people with great passion, however, so perhaps he took some measure of sick satisfaction in allegedly gunning down the 39-year-old Johns, an African American.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As Detroit home prices crash, sales are heating up. But with all of the plant closings and layoffs, who's buying? Investors -- some of whom are snapping up five and 10 houses at a time.

"I have investors from all over the country and the world," said Jeremy Burgess, co-founder of Urban Detroit Wholesalers, which buys undervalued homes to rehab and rent or to sell to other investors. "One Lithuanian woman just bought a second house."

"Most of the local investors are out of money," added Mike Shannon, who specializes in Detroit foreclosures and has clients from New Zealand, Australia, England and other places.

For 80th anniversary of Anne Frank's birth, museum will display her actual diaries

In the shadow of this week's tragedy at the Holocaust Museum in D.C., another memorial is getting set to recognize a milestone. The Anne Frank House, the museum where Holocaust victim grew up, puts all of her original diaries on permanent display in honor of her 80th birthday on Friday. The famous Anne Frank Diaries have been sealed in archives at the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, but will now return to the very spot on which they were written. This week, scientists also unveiled an "age-progressed" picture of what Anne Frank would have looked like today had she survived.



AMSTERDAM (AP) — The Anne Frank House museum says it will put the teenage Holocaust victim's diaries and other writings on permanent display to commemorate what would have been her 80th birthday on Friday.

Frank died in a concentration camp at 15.
Until now her posthumously published diaries and other works have been kept in an archive at the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation. Some have previously been displayed at the museum, which encompasses and preserves the "Secret Annex" — the tiny apartment above a canal-side warehouse where the Frank family hid for two years.

Education Minister Ronald Plasterk said it was important for the historical record that the writings be on display at the museum, "on the spot where they were written."

Frank was born June 12, 1929, and began keeping a diary in a red-and-white autograph book shortly before the family went into hiding in July 1942.
That book is on display at the museum now.

In addition, Frank used two school exercise books as diaries once the autograph book was full.

There is also a small ledger from her father's office she filled with quotes she liked from books she had read; and an account book she used to write short stories in.
