<b.With Mother's Day approaching I want to think about Michelle Obama's assertion that her primary role as First Lady is “Mom-in-Chief.”</b.

Many progressive feminists were distressed with Michelle's assertion of motherhood as her primary role. They hoped she would seek a more aggressive policy agenda. After all Michelle Obama is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She spent her career as an effective advocate for urban communities in their fraught relationship with powerful institutions. She is smart, capable, and independent. She maintained her own career and ambitions throughout Barack's early political career and even during his election to the U.S. Senate.

Truth is, some of us who were in the orbit of the Obamas ten years ago believed Michelle, not Barack, was the real star of the couple. So while I don't think anyone expected her to commute to a 9-to-5 job in D.C; many hoped that she would take on an independent political role in the Obama administration.

Instead, Michelle has crafted a more traditional role for herself. She is highly visible, but she has taken on relatively safe issues like childhood literacy, advocacy for women and girls, and support of military families. Even her White House garden is framed more as an initiative for healthy eating and quality family meals than as a statement of commitment to local foods as an effort against global climate change.

I've been offline for the last week. On the anniversary of my mother's birthday, I went to what I thought was an update meeting with my boss, only to be laid off – along with a 100 other folk last Monday.

Then my laptop had issues. Finally got it back today – the laptop, not the job :)

My friends are frankly stunned that I have been taking it so well. I just give thanks to God, my expenses are fairly low, they gave me a severance package to cushion the blow. And giving a shout out to MY PRESIDENT, I can afford Cobra for the 1st nine months. So I'm just taking it one day at a time.

So after finding a wonderful picture of First Lady Michelle Obama at the Time 100 event Tuesday evening, I thought I'd celebrate my laptop's rebirth with a blog post. Enjoy.

Nsenga Burton Cinco de Mayo is one of those holidays that many use as a time for celebration, while knowing very little about the holiday and its importance to the people of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Outnumbered 2-to-1, the Mexicans defeated the French. No other army outside of the Americas has invaded Mexico since.

In America, we whittle down Mexican culture into music, parties, cookouts and the like. Many people do this as a form of inclusion, but strip away the significance of the holiday. Black folks would go crazy if every MLK holiday, people fried chicken, drank Henessey and played Marvin Gaye. That's what many of us do to Mexicans, throwing back Tequila and munching on tacos in “celebration” of Cinco de Mayo. Mexico is more than swine flu, great cuisine and Tequila.

What many of us fail to think about is the relationship between Blacks and Mexicans or Black Mexicans (Palenques), many of whom migrated from Caribbean locations. Like us, many came to Mexico in chains as slaves. Some of it you've heard before (lighter-skinned Mexicans are treated better) and some of it, you haven't — Black Mexicans have to prove that they are “legal” in Mexico, the same as many Mexicans have to in the United States. The Bible Doesn’t Teach It

The doctrine of baptism for the dead was first given to the Mormon church by Joseph Smith in 1836 and is found in his Doctrine and Covenants, (but not, as we’ll see, in the Book of Mormon).

In Paul’s first epistle to the church in Corinth, he treats a number of subjects. This letter was written to counteract problems he saw developing in Corinth after he had established the church there. Corinth had its share of pagan religions, but there were also quasi-Christian groups that practiced variations of orthodox Christian doctrines. Enter baptism for the dead.

Mormons cite a single biblical passage to support baptizing members on behalf of dead persons, “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?” (1 Cor. 15:29).

Although we have no way of knowing for sure who was engaging in this practice, it is certain that Paul was not referring to orthodox Christians baptizing the dead. Catholic and Protestant scholars agree on that.

THEN, LOOK @ THIS: THEY CONTRADICT THEMSELVES:

A Flat-Out Contradiction

The case against baptism for the dead is also made by the Mormon scriptures themselves. The current Mormon doctrine on baptism for the dead is quite unlike what Joseph Smith first taught. As in other cases, the Book of Mormon becomes an important tool for the Christian apologist. It contradicts much Mormon theology, and baptism for the dead is no exception.

In Alma 34:35-36 we read: “For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he does seal you his. Therefore, the spirit of the Lord has withdrawn from you and hath no place in you; the power of the devil is over you, and this is the final state of the wicked.”

In other words, those who die as non-Mormons go to hell, period. There’s no suggestion of a later, vicarious admission into the Mormon church.
