With Mother's Day approaching I want to think about Michelle Obama's assertion that her primary role as First Lady is "Mom-in-Chief."
Many progressive feminists were distressed with Michelle's assertion of motherhood as her primary role. They hoped she would seek a more aggressive policy agenda. After all Michelle Obama is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She spent her career as an effective advocate for urban communities in their fraught relationship with powerful institutions. She is smart, capable, and independent. She maintained her own career and ambitions throughout Barack's early political career and even during his election to the U.S. Senate.
Truth is, some of us who were in the orbit of the Obamas ten years ago believed Michelle, not Barack, was the real star of the couple. So while I don't think anyone expected her to commute to a 9-to-5 job in D.C; many hoped that she would take on an independent political role in the Obama administration.
Instead, Michelle has crafted a more traditional role for herself. She is highly visible, but she has taken on relatively safe issues like childhood literacy, advocacy for women and girls, and support of military families. Even her White House garden is framed more as an initiative for healthy eating and quality family meals than as a statement of commitment to local foods as an effort against global climate change.
Businessman and professional basketball Hall-of-Famer Dave Bing has been elected Detroit’s newest mayor and will serve through the end of the year.
The 65-year-old Detroit Pistons great defeated incumbent and fellow Democrat Ken Cockrel Jr. Tuesday in a special runoff election, 52.3 percent to 47.7 percent.
Bing will serve out the remainder of Kwame Kilpatrick’s second term, but must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold onto the mayor’s seat for a full four years.
The founder of steel manufacturer The Bing Group announced his run for mayor the day after Kilpatrick stepped down as part of pleas to two criminal cases.
The 43-year-old Cockrel moved up from city council president after Kilpatrick resigned.
Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit's mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.
"The real work starts now," Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.
"What we will bring ... is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor's office," he said.
With all but two of 629 precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 48,951 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,703 votes, for Ken Cockrel Jr. Both are Democrats.
Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.
Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor's seat for a full four years.
The founder of steel manufacturer The Bing Group announced his run for mayor the day after Kilpatrick stepped down as part of pleas to two criminal cases.
Cockrel, 43, was City Council president before Kilpatrick's departure automatically promoted him to the mayor's office. He'll go back to that job now. Story continues below
I've been offline for the last week. On the anniversary of my mother's birthday, I went to what I thought was an update meeting with my boss, only to be laid off - along with a 100 other folk last Monday.
Then my laptop had issues. Finally got it back today - the laptop, not the job :)
My friends are frankly stunned that I have been taking it so well. I just give thanks to God, my expenses are fairly low, they gave me a severance package to cushion the blow. And giving a shout out to MY PRESIDENT, I can afford Cobra for the 1st nine months. So I'm just taking it one day at a time.
So after finding a wonderful picture of First Lady Michelle Obama at the Time 100 event Tuesday evening, I thought I'd celebrate my laptop's rebirth with a blog post. Enjoy.
Sorry about the layoff. Respect how you're taking it in stride.

Cinco de Mayo: Discovering more about Blacks and Mexicans by Nsenga Burton | Friday, May 01, 2009 ShareThis
Nsenga Burton Cinco de Mayo is one of those holidays that many use as a time for celebration, while knowing very little about the holiday and its importance to the people of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Outnumbered 2-to-1, the Mexicans defeated the French. No other army outside of the Americas has invaded Mexico since.
In America, we whittle down Mexican culture into music, parties, cookouts and the like. Many people do this as a form of inclusion, but strip away the significance of the holiday. Black folks would go crazy if every MLK holiday, people fried chicken, drank Henessey and played Marvin Gaye. That's what many of us do to Mexicans, throwing back Tequila and munching on tacos in "celebration" of Cinco de Mayo. Mexico is more than swine flu, great cuisine and Tequila.
What many of us fail to think about is the relationship between Blacks and Mexicans or Black Mexicans (Palenques), many of whom migrated from Caribbean locations. Like us, many came to Mexico in chains as slaves. In line with our editorial goal of discovering more here, RushmoreDrive.com celebrates Cinco de Mayo, by bringing you information about Black Mexicans. Some of it you've heard before (lighter-skinned Mexicans are treated better) and some of it, you haven't -- Black Mexicans have to prove that they are "legal" in Mexico, the same as many Mexicans have to in the United States. We've done some of the legwork for you to get you started on discovering more about Blacks and Mexicans in Mexico and the US.

AIG bonuses four times higher than reported TAGS: Economy, Government Bailout, AIG, Bonus By EAMON JAVERS | 5/5/09 10:42 PM EDT
The 2008 AIG bonus pool just keeps getting larger and larger.
In a response to detailed questions from Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the company has offered a third assessment of exactly how much it paid out in bonuses last year.
And the new number, offered in a document submitted to Cummings on May 1, is the highest figure the company has disclosed to date.
AIG now says it paid out more than $454 million in bonuses to its employees for work performed in 2008.
That is nearly four times more than the company revealed in late March when asked by POLITICO to detail its total bonus payments. At that time, AIG spokesman Nick Ashooh said the firm paid about $120 million in 2008 bonuses to a pool of more than 6,000 employees.
POLICE MEDIOCRITY ON THE RISE Texas Highway Robbery “Tenaha Police ” Officers Shaking Down Motorists
Like something you here about from tourists to third world nations CNN is reporting an investigation into allegations of Police Officers in Tenaha Texas ( see http://en.wikipedia are shaking down motorist for minor traffic infractions. See http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/05/05/texas.polic... The incidents are all erily similar and show disparite treatment of African American motorists giving rise to blatant and invidious discrimination. The facts are similar, either pay up now surrender your assets or face jail, money laundering charges and in some cases losing your children to the County protective children services.
I have only seen this pay or perish scenario in the old black and white movies, but if true it demonstrates why good officers get bad raps from foolish and perhaps bigoted law enforcement agencies. IF TRUE THIS IS EXTORTION PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Study: Africans More Genetically Diverse Than Rest of World Research Raises Questions About Accuracy of Ancestral Tracing for African Americans
By Joel Achenbach Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, April 30, 2009
Africans are more diverse genetically than the inhabitants of the rest of the world combined, according to a sweeping study that carried researchers into remote valleys and mountaintops to sample the bloodlines of more than 100 distinct populations.
The report, published today in the journal Science Express, suggests that, because of historical migrations and genetic mixing across the continent, it will be hard for African Americans to trace their ancestry in fine detail. African American genealogies are increasingly popular and commercialized, but the authors of the new study cast doubt on how precise such searches can be given the complexity of the genetic makeup of Africans.
"It may be very challenging to trace back ancestry to particular tribes or ethnic groups," said Sarah Tishkoff, a University of Pennsylvania geneticist who led the international research team.
The first anatomically modern human beings originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago, and all human beings today are their direct descendants. The study points to an area along the Namibian-South African border, the homeland of the San people, as the starting point for a southwest-to-northeast migratory route through Africa and exiting the continent at about the midpoint of the Red Sea.
Gov. Beverly Perdue asked for -- and received -- the resignation of N.C. Alcoholic Beverage Commission Chairman Doug Fox today, hours after newspapers gave Perdue's office a copy of a racist photo illustration sent from Fox’s e-mail address after the election in November.
The e-mail included an altered photo of the White House that turned the South Lawn into an enormous watermelon patch. The phrase “There goes the neighborhood...” was printed above the photo.
The e-mail was sent from Fox’s law firm address on Nov. 14, 10 days after Barack Obama was elected president. The message, which had been forwarded multiple times by others before reaching Fox, contained no text other than a subject line: "how true."
Fox made no mention of the e-mail in his resignation letter, instead suggesting that he was leaving voluntarily.
“I believe it is time to surrender the helm to someone new,” Fox wrote.</b.
But Perdue indicated in a statement that the resignation was linked to the e-mail.</>
“I have accepted Doug Fox’s letter of resignation,” Perdue said. “Emails and images of this nature are offensive and unacceptable.”
Fox, who was paid $110,000 last year, offered to stay on and help his successor settle in. Perdue declined.
"The resignation will be effective immediately," said David Kochman, Perdue's communications director.

Median Age of Fox News Viewers is 65 - Average Dittohead Is a 67 Year Old Man Jon Ponder | May. 5, 2009
About two-thirds of the way into media writer Michael Woolf’s Vanity Fair column, “The Man Who Ate the G.O.P.,” on the conundrum of Rush Limbaugh’s dual role as GOP party boss and hate radio megastar, this demographic nugget about the conservative media audience caught my eye:
“Among ad-supported cable nets, the news nets … sport the most gray, with Fox News Channel’s daytime and primetime skeds the absolute oldest, clocking in with a median age above 65.” - VarietyArguably no message apparatus like [Limbaugh’s show] exists in the nation, except, perhaps, at the White House (or in Oprah — whose position with American women is curiously analogous to Rush’s position with American conservatives). It is concentrated and extraordinary power.
Except that this power ought to be ending. It ought to all be on the wane. It is not just the Obama victory and the magnitude of his approval ratings. It is not just that the gravity of the economic crisis, with historic unemployment rates, means it’s a lot harder to get people excited about Reagan-and-Rush-esque hands-off government.
It is, rather, a crueler demographic point. The dirty little secret of conservative talk radio is that the average age of listeners is 67 and rising, according to [Jon Sinton, founding president of Air America] — the Fox News audience, likewise, is in its mid-60s: “What sort of continuing power do you have as your audience strokes out?”
Only dinosaurs listen to radio these days, and it’s doubtful many people under 50 even know AM radio exists, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the average age of right-wing radio listeners is 67. It’s also truly not shocking that this demographic is also predominantly male. According to a Pew study in February, 72 percent of Limbaugh’s elderly listeners are men and thus are statistically likely to “stroke out” sometime in Pres. Obama’s second term, assuming he wins one.
However, television viewership trounces radio audiences in every demographic, so the fact that the average age of FNC viewers is, well, retired could have huge ramifications on the political playing field over the next decade.
It took some googling but I found a reliable source that confirms that during the 2007-2008 television season, the most recent season for which figures are available, the average age of Fox News viewers was 65:
According to a study released by Magna Global’s Steve Sternberg, the five broadcast nets’ average live median age (in other words, not including delayed DVR viewing) was 50 last season. That’s the oldest ever since Sternberg started analyzing median age more than a decade ago — and the first time the nets’ median age was outside of the vaunted 18-49 demo…
Among ad-supported cable nets, the news nets (along with older-skewing Hallmark Channel, Golf Channel and GSN’s daytime sked) sport the most gray, with Fox News Channel’s daytime and primetime skeds the absolute oldest, clocking in with a median age above 65. (Emphasis added.)
By the way, MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” does the best in cable news primetime among the most desirable younger demographic, but according to numbers from last season, the average “Countdown” viewer is 59 years old, and 55 percent of its audience is male.
fyi & and are any of you related to freemen pursuing this case????
as a Native American participating at jjp I find this very interesting. I haven't followed the issue previously, and to my knowledge my particular tribe isn't involved as I don't ever recall a black member in our tribe unless they actually were a blood descendant of which I have a niece & nephews. Whoa! Between this and the black farmer's issue I would say the President has a few racial hot items he is being faced with. For the whole article here is the link.
"Dems call for DOJ probe of Indian tribes By Kevin Bogardus Posted: 05/04/09 08:22 PM [ET]
A civil rights controversy surrounding several Indian tribes could pit President Obama against some of Capitol Hill’s most prominent liberals and black lawmakers.
Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), John Lewis (D-Ga.) and others asked Attorney General Eric Holder in a letter dated last Thursday to initiate a “full-scale investigation” of five Indian tribes for allegedly abusing the rights of the Freedmen: African-Americans descended from freed slaves once owned by Indians.
Also signing onto the letter were other senior lawmakers from the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), including Reps. Diane Watson (D-Calif.), Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), the caucus’s chairwoman.
“Over forty years after enactment of the landmark Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, there is a place in the United States that African Americans cannot vote or receive federal benefits as a matter of law,” the letter states. “The victims of this racial oppression are known as freedmen, who are descendants of African slaves owned by Indians. They are called freedmen, but they are anything but free.”
The call for an aggressive investigation of the tribes by Congress could force Obama to contradict a position he took on the campaign trail last year."

When I tried to link to the article from your post, I got an error message. So I just went to the Hill to search for it myself and ran across this one that was just posted today:
Reps will ask Justice not to investigate Indian tribes http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/oklahoma-re... House members from Oklahoma will call upon the Justice Department not to investigate several Native American tribes for alleged mistreatment of the Freedmen — descendants of freed slaves once owned by Indians.
As my great aunt would say "this gonna be messy".

what you saw, came well after what I read....
Miranda, you are right...this will get messy!!
fredman1
I am unclear on this subject. Are the freedmen part indian? Did they marry into the tribes? Is this a dispute over sharing indian gambling profits? They few articles I read said that the tribes would only share gambling profits with those with indian ancestors. ??? whats the deal ???
Angelar
it is as interesting to you as it is to me....as a Native American...I have a problem trying to figure out why another racial entity would want to belong to our ethnicity. But, then I haven't lived in the shoes of the "freedmen" so I don't get that. Just saying.
they need to be investigated and called on the carpet. Those Black folks are part of those tribes, and the thing that gets me:
they only want to throw out the BLACK mix-ins.
They have no problem with the WHITE mix-ins.
So, they need to be called out.
Angelar
by the way, before this goes on too far....keep in mind that none of tmy tribe wanted to become "white" in case that is what some may take from your comment about "white mix-ins." I have never ever heard that term in my whole life time until tonight.
very interesting...I had not gotten what you did about white "mix-ins" and not to discount your interpretation, but my initial reaction is it doesn't make sense to include either "mix-ins" black or white, if the tribes are doing what I think they are doing.
In any case, you just introduced me to a something I didn't get before and that is "mix-ins"...
Anyway....I will definitely explore this whole thing much much more.
Miranda
hmph....if you can just go to usatoday's homepage....that front page story is sure gonna spur the usual 1000 plus racist rhetoric isn't it?? Hope they get the number of comments they're looking for....smh
The black woman is unemployed and looking for work, but so are other folks, whites, hispanics, asians.
The article screamed: BLACK WOMEN ARE WELFARE QUEENS.
IT served the need of the majority of the readers. Judging from the comments, Obama had better school the niggras who have all dem babies and no fathers around to support them.
These newspapers aren't fit to wipe my ass. They deserve extinction.
Dom DeLuise, the portly entertainer and chef whose affable nature made him a popular character actor for decades with movie and TV audiences as well as directors and fellow actors, has died. He was 75.
Agent Robert Malcolm said DeLuise died about 6 p.m. Monday at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica. Malcolm said the family did not release the cause of death.
"He had high blood pressure, he had diabetes, he had lots of things," but seemed fine as recently as two weeks ago, he said.
DeLuise entered the hospital on Friday and his wife and all three sons were there when he died "peacefully," Malcolm said.
A family statement said, "It's easy to mourn his death but easier to remember a time when he made you laugh."
The actor, who loved to cook and eat almost as much as he enjoyed acting, also carved out a formidable second career later in life as a chef of fine cuisine. He authored two cookbooks and would appear often on morning TV shows to whip up his favorite recipes.
As an actor, he was incredibly prolific, appearing in scores of movies and TV shows, in Broadway plays and voicing characters for numerous cartoon shows.
Writer-director-actor Mel Brooks particularly admired DeLuise's talent for offbeat comedy and cast him in several films, including "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie," "History of the World Part I" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." DeLuise was also the voice of Pizza the Hutt in Brooks' "Star Wars" parody, "Spaceballs." Story continues below
Dom Deluise, a comedy great, died Monday night after a long illness. He is survived by sons Michael, Peter and David, and dozens of hilarious films. His most memorable performances were often in the hands of writer-director-actor Mel Brooks who cast him in "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie," "History of the World Part I," "Spaceballs," and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." Here are some of his most memorable film roles from an expansive career...
BLAZING SADDLES (1974) Deluise played Buddy Bizarre, a musical director whose set is interrupted by the fight between the townsfolk and Lamarr's army of thugs. It's one of the few times you see him dancing, which is (obviously) hilarious.

It's not just the baptism, but the idea that now the POTUS's deceased mother is actually listed as a Mormon on the Mormon registry without her or her family's consent is creepy
isonprize
I cut & paste from the aftrnoon thread...
Okay, so this IS strange. I'm trying to understand, so I have a few questions. No disrespect at all to Stanley Ann Dunham.
I thought Barack and Maya had their mother cremated. Also, how can you baptise someone who doesn't consent (um... because they are dead?)
lamh32
According to the article, the Mormon faith allows you to posthumously baptize family members into the faith. In this case, the Morman official said that they don't know who "baptized" Stanley Ann Dunham. But the website shows that right round the time Obama sealed the Dem nomination, June 11, Stanley Ann was posthumously "baptized".
Whoever this person is who did this should be slapped!!!
isonprize
So, obviously they have a different definition of baptism than I learned. Being raised Baptist, I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior, attended basic catechism classes and baptised early one Christmas mornin' -- White robe, white swim cap, in a baptismal pool.
And I mean soakin' wet, dunked, too! -- Father, Son and Holy Ghost - laid out all the way under the water and came up shiny and new, baptised.
How do you "baptise" someone who ain't there to be baptised. I'm still tryin' to understand. What do these Mormons call baptism???
Baptism Mormons believe in baptism by immersion, which is just a fancy way of saying you'll be dunked from head to toe. Also, a person has to be at least 8 years old before she is eligible to be baptized.
THERE IS MORE.
BUT. . . . . . .
This is whatchu "axed" 'bout! :>) :>)
isonprize
Aw 'ight, GLH. Work wit' me, here.
If that is their definition of baptism, why come they think they can baptise somebody a person who is deceased, dare I say, cremated???
The doctrine of baptism for the dead was first given to the Mormon church by Joseph Smith in 1836 and is found in his Doctrine and Covenants, (but not, as we’ll see, in the Book of Mormon).
In Paul’s first epistle to the church in Corinth, he treats a number of subjects. This letter was written to counteract problems he saw developing in Corinth after he had established the church there. Corinth had its share of pagan religions, but there were also quasi-Christian groups that practiced variations of orthodox Christian doctrines. Enter baptism for the dead.
Mormons cite a single biblical passage to support baptizing members on behalf of dead persons, "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?" (1 Cor. 15:29). SKIP Although we have no way of knowing for sure who was engaging in this practice, it is certain that Paul was not referring to orthodox Christians baptizing the dead. Catholic and Protestant scholars agree on that.
THEN, LOOK @ THIS: THEY CONTRADICT THEMSELVES:
A Flat-Out Contradiction
The case against baptism for the dead is also made by the Mormon scriptures themselves. The current Mormon doctrine on baptism for the dead is quite unlike what Joseph Smith first taught. As in other cases, the Book of Mormon becomes an important tool for the Christian apologist. It contradicts much Mormon theology, and baptism for the dead is no exception.
In Alma 34:35-36 we read: "For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he does seal you his. Therefore, the spirit of the Lord has withdrawn from you and hath no place in you; the power of the devil is over you, and this is the final state of the wicked."
In other words, those who die as non-Mormons go to hell, period. There’s no suggestion of a later, vicarious admission into the Mormon church.
SOMEBODY is CONFUSING THEIR CONGREGANTS!!
