this is so true. When we arrived in London years ago the Indians were protesting and there was lots of talk about their women who had come to London to be married being searched so as to make it appear that they were not virgins., therefore not good prospects for marriage among their men. I will never forget one sign that read “WE ARE HERE BECAUSE YOU WERE THERE'. I remember being asked often by many of the merchants in the neighborhood if I Indian. While they knew I was associaed with an Embassy my Blackness did not suggest the American Embassy. After seeing the way Indians were treated, I felt all the questions were to determine how they would treat me, which may have been my mistake. However I was vehement in letting them know that I am Black American. So I don't feel so bad about the actions of the Indians here in America because I feel they are trying to escape negative treatment the same as I was while in London. They see how Blacks are treated here and they don't want to be on the receiving end of that same treatment. I certainly don't blame them for that. However, they still get their share.

When we lived in London in 1979 as envoy for The American Embassy, my son, who was then 11 years old' was stopped in Hampsted, where we lived because they saw him running. He was brought to our home where we had visitors from Italy. The Police wanted to know from our guest if this young man lived at the address, even though my husband and I were standing right there and my husband was speaking to the police. They refused to listen to my husband and continued to question our guest while ignoring my husband until our guest, in his broken English insisted that we, not he, were the occupants of the home. My husband went bananas. The event was quite harrowing for my son as well as for us. I had heard of this “stop and search” but had paid litte attention until that time. this is really a scary thing, even though, given certain neighborhoods in America, the same thing would happen. thanks for the story, very interesting.

And of course, racial discrepancies are not just in the police force/legal justice system. When we look at education, at mental health and in the work place the racial disparities are also glaring.

I have worked there on a number of occasions, and spent weeks at a time in and around London and Manchester. Some of my projects take me into the Board and Senior executive levels of companies, as well as into the offices of some high powered Law Firms. Black or brown faces got real thin to non-existent the higher you rose.

It's like the US was back in the '70's, varying from acceptance, to muted hostility to outright racism. At first I thought it was due to being a "Yankee" - but some of my white co-workers were treated quite differently in the same situations. It got progressively worse the higher up the organizational tree you went, where there was definitely a "school mafia" tying senior executives together, enforcing an all white boys club.

I also noticed that in the (very few) instances where I worked with a "black" Brit, whether Indian or Afro that they received substantially worse treatment from their co-workers.

Not what I expected.

I don’t agree that the UK is any better off in its race relations than the US. The difference is that we Brits, for the most part, like to pretend that race isn’t an issue while Americans (despite the fact that you think you don’t) talk about it a great deal more.

I can testify that the UK got some interesting racial dynamics over there. The Indians (literally from India) were more friendly over there than they are in the US. Some of the Indians here like to think that they're white--Yeah, I said it.

And for those of us who enjoy Loose Ends, Incognito, Estelle, and other UK-bred soul singers, We know that type of artistry wasn't created in a vacuum. That music was borne of suffering similar to our own. Black Britons are a beautiful thing.
