This is also the price people pay for putting race loyalty above everything else and remaining in all-Black construct full of intolerant people you have nothing in common with. We have to open our social circles and really study several religious tenets and ty out churches to find one that suits the individual. A lot of these churches are nothing but tributes to one charismatic (i.e loud and overbearing) man who isn't living anything close to the lifestyle he's preaching.

My HEART still aches for those two little black boys, and their parents probably don't equate what the church teaches about homosexuality and how that might have cost those boys their emotional and spiritual welfare….ultimately their death. It's Maddening.

hmmm. Kinda makes me think of those two little black boys who committed suicide. It was clear their mothers took them to church…I wonder what kinds of things they heard while they were there. It's one thing to be tormented at school, quite another when authority figures don't support your personal dignity.

Agree. I would never try to fit the need of someone or some place. It must fit my needs.

The oppressor is never the Master, but a slave himself…. A true Master of Life has no need to oppress another.

It is sad when black churches cannot recognize the damage it causes when we Alienate and denegrate our own because of sexual orientation. What next?……

I despise the gay-bashing in our churches. It's a lazy brand of “theology” where a pastor gets to pick on an easy target. What's telling is that you NEVER hear sermons about the sin of adultery. Hypocritcal whores.

I hate these kinds of church people, I really do. They keep black people back, when we must be embracing all of our people and differences.

Thank you so much for your wide-ranging and very personal outlook on your experience in the black church and about the D.C. Council's doings, too. I had a feeling someone was going to jump up and down over this, and the more pious-seeming the pronouncements, the more disreputable the holier-than-thou speakers, especially the Reverend Marion “the bitch set me up” Barry.

i agree it's very sad
especially when you know people in the church are gay
i know a young man who is gay at my church
and he is one of the most dedicated people i know
he keeps the church going through choir rehearsals , fund raising, he makes people feel welcome he's just an all around kind and intelligent young man

then he has to sit in church and listen how he is going to hell and that he is a pervert and doesn't deserve to serve in the house of God
