I know that he has information that the public is not privy to and so i voted for him thinking and feeling that he would more than like do the right thing. I do worry about our men and women abroad and we don't have to have the pictures right now to know that tortour happened. Let's cut him some slack. this thing is going to be handled and i feel secure that the President will make the right choice. I'm sure once he got into office he found somethings that he could not have known before the office was turned over to him.....Just like how really bad the economy was/is. Remember we could barely get a glimpse of Bush before his time was up because he knew how bad it was. I trust President Obama to make the right decisions.

I am going to have to trust the President on this one. He is not playing some long game, rope-a-dope, clever strategy which will allow him to ultimately expose Bush’s war crimes and prosecute them. In fact, he is going to do everything he can to squash all of this.

Imagine what such prosecutions would entail: years of courtroom drama, depositions, lawsuits and counter-suits; the long parade of powerful and high ranking ex- and current members of government, including a goodly number of Democrats, being called on the carpet and having to testify against one another; the enormous rancor and bitterness. This would be Watergate on steroids. And imagine the shot in the arm this would give the zombified Limbaugh Right.

The prosecutions you are asking for would simply swallow the Obama presidency whole. It is the kind of energy draining, oxygen consuming drama that is the nightmare of every president. It would come to define his presidency in the same way the Hostage Crisis defined Carter’s and there is zero chance he will opt for this.

President Obama is making a realistic, cold, clear-eyed cost-benefit analysis. This is the choice: Does he fix the economy, fix healthcare, get a handle on the two wars he’s dealing with, or does he prosecute Bush era war crimes? He has chosen his agenda and is asking us to choose that to."

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily...

1. I understand the sentiment of those of you who don't agree with PBO's decisions via torture procecutions and realeasing the photos, but I don't think that you have thought about all of the consequenses that come with both. My knee jerk response was WTF? But I have marinated on it and I realize that 1) I don't see what good would come out of it. 2) I have barely heard any discussion on healthcare, energy reform, etc. The people who will benefit most from this stuff most is the media because other then anti gay beauty pagents and missing white girls nothing makes their dicks harder then a partisan food fight. 3) I believe that the Abu Grhab photos hurt our image and were a great recruting tool for Al Quieda, so how can I not be intellectually honest and not believe that these photos will do the same? 4) Fuck the dumb shit, we are all grown and decisions have to be made in real life. Grown folks don't get to do everything they want. Choices and priorities must be made. Not all issues the POTUS has to deal with are equal and never will be. If PBO doesn't want to sacrifice healthcare, economic reforms, energy and everything else he promised (he did not promise procecutions for torture) to get done behind this shit, I don't blame him. 5) Just as an aside, has anyone asked why photos of these crimes even exist? Why would they take pictures in the first place? Seems like the best way to cover one's tracks is not to leave in that are visible to anyone. I have to say that's a nagging question for me. You don't have to worry about photos being released if they aren't any, so who's the damn photographer?

Borrowed this from a poster at the Daily Dish because he/she said it better then I could:

“I’m sorry, but President Obama is going to break your heart on this one. The story was initially broken in the U.S. on May 10 by Andy Worthington. Now Newsweek is reporting (H/T, again, the redoubtable Mr. Worthington) that al-Libi was "healthy and had no apparent physical ailments" when Human Rights Watch (HRW) visitors met him on April 27, only days before he was found dead in Tripoli's Abu Salim prison.

But Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball have even stranger circumstances to report (emphases added):

Human-rights workers and Libyan dissidents tell NEWSWEEK they have independently confirmed the report [of Libi's death] from sources inside Libya and demanded an immediate independent investigation into the circumstances of his death. Libi, who once served as emir of the Khalden training camp in Afghanistan, had recently been identified by defense lawyers in the U.S. as a prime potential witness in any upcoming trials of top terror suspects, either in revamped military commissions or in U.S. federal courts. Brent Mickum, a U.S. lawyer who represents Abu Zubaydah, another high-value CIA detainee who is alleged to have worked closely with Libi, says he had recently begun efforts through intermediaries to arrange to talk to Libi. "The timing of this is weird," Mickum says.
http://firedoglake.com/2009/05/14/the-zubaydah-...

The plot thickens.
The Zubaydah Torture “Experiment”: Connections to the al-Libi Case?
The death of former CIA “ghost prisoner” Ali Mohamed al-Fakheri, aka Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, is beginning to make some serious waves in the press. But guilt and innocence are determined by evidence, not presumption. Those people were never tried for anything. They were tortured for sport. What else could you call raping children in front of their parents about? Or sodomizing a female detainee who knows nothing about anything except cruelty and sadism?

All of this reminds me of the witch trials. There torture was used for confessions. Later in the light of reason, people realized there were no truth to any of the accusations and that the evidence produced by torture evaporated once it was examined by objective people. Why does torture produce bad evidence? Torturers by their very nature are more interested in the torture and getting excited by torture than anything else. They pay no attention to evidence gathered by logic, reason, and hard work. Quietly asking questions, spywork, and getting the trust of the detainee isn't exciting to them, so they don't pay any attention to that.

There are innocents who were tortured.
